I created an alt account to 'wear the pants', so to speak. My main account started off female, and will likely finish as female. That, and I find it pretty relaxing to walk around as a quiet guy, looking at things. No one points fingers, No one laughs, no one asks for sex. The alt matches my gender physically, but he doesn't match my personality quite as well as my main account.

From: Cubey Terra Alts are great for testing scripted objects to make sure that they work for someone other than the creator. Yep, also good if you want to use llGetCreator() copy protection but you've given people copy+mod+transfer stuff with your main account. Additionally it's a good way to run a large business. Have all your vendors owned by the alt, and all money is paid to the alt, so you keep the business account separate from your personal account. (That's how it is done in the real world by all but the smallest businesses.) Also protects the main account in case someone figures out an exploit against your vendor - they might pump the alt account's L$ dry but your personal cash would remain unaffected.

For each object you'd want to sell, you'd have to set full permissions, then send the object to your alt. Then as your alt, you'd have to set the permissions back again, one at a time. That would be a very tedious process if you sell more than a few objects.

Send the day's profits to it to keep myself from being drained should something to terribly wrong. Same idea, different path. Not to mention, it makes it easier not to go on big splurgie spending sprees.

Or, you could use a remote delivery vending system. You own the delivery end of it, the alt owns the vendors. (Or use your av as a "bank" like Jillian.)

I think I have a good sense of design but I am really bad at moving prims around so I once made a male alt just to see if he could do better. Not to be sexist but it seems that most builders are men so I thought I had found the perfect solution.
To my horror he couldn't build any better than me and was a jerk to boot! If he wasn't just laying around he was off somewhere chasing skirts so I put the poor fellow out of his misery by deleting him.
Maybe someday I will try again in the hope that he will be born with more skill and technique points.

I admit I created a male alt to be a super builder since it seems that the majority of SL builders are male and I'm not so hot at it. I'm not sure what went wrong but all he did was lay around and when he did get up he went out chasing skirts. Some builder...bah.
Where are the few good alts when we really need them?

Apparently people use them so they can give another person 21 negative ratings in 3 minutes...

Alt
05-08-2005 12:15
I was going to get an alt, specifically for the reasons Cubey mentioned; testing out scripts, ect. Fortunately my roomate joined SL and I just log into his character now. Right now building a 6-seater airship I'm wishing I had access to 4 more ;P
Necessary for any derranged hermits such as myself to test to make sure scripts work once the owner changes, like the racecar game I made where I was too stupid to realise that once someone else owned it they would need a _copiable_ version of the cars. I make a habit of first testing anything I make with Billy's character, then if it's anything more complex than a shirt or a 1-prim lamp I send copies to friends to help "beta test"'em.

I use them to start, maintain, and end forum wars.

I'd hesitate to get an alt because of all the accusations that fly around here.

I got an alt because I am a geek and needed to register Polar Kraken.
I build on there sometimes when I don't want to be bothered and occassionally go shopping as well. Some of my in-world sales go to that account so I keep my main account balance relatively.. balanced. If I have too much spare L$ sitting around, I'm tempted to go spend, and that's not good. This way, if I want money to go shopping, I have to sign off, sign onto the alt, Pay myself, sign off, sign onto the main. Kind of takes the fun out of it.
But, yeah, I mostly just got it for the name. >_>

I was thinking about creating an alt for avatar testing. My avatar looks pretty silly trying on a dress...
