Lately there has been an immense growth in malls population, some looking great, some honestly looking a lil less great (Euphemisms... the spice of life... :D) but having other strong points, like position or lag free environment:
This poll (wow, my very first... hope i didnt get the Blake Fever...) is mostly because i'm very curious on where people prefer to go shopping, and on what makes them chose one mall over another to satisfy their shopaholic instrincts... Just a little social research (i perfectly know that the definition of what is a beautiful building is completely subjective, in fact you are asked to be subjective in your judgement), don't worry, i won't create ANOTHER mall, i have enough trouble running my own shops without beginning to run other people's ones too :P
(You are allowed multiple choices, in the case you like to see more of one element in your ideal mall)

I didn't see my option, but here is it
one with no glass, very few fixed walls and no roof with big holes in the floor at the second, third, however many levels at both ends of the mall so you can fly up to the next level. I guess I can't draw what I mean... and it's easy to missinterpret.... basically accessibility.

I hate nothing worse than bouncing off walls trying to get in before everything rezzes.

We can fly here! we should take full advantage of that. Primary enterances should be on the roof!

Oh i guess that falls under simplicity... unfortunately can't include more than 10 options, lol :)

Come see Mochastyle then. It has two entrances (one being a phantom roof), it's simple, close to a telehub, low-lag, free of distractions, and with controls to set the music to whatever you like, or off) ... And did I mention it's cheap to rent a booth?

I could only choose one option, but I look for several. Simplicity, lag-free environment and proximity to a telehub being the top 3. I have recently had SEVRAL encounters where I could not even GET to a store due to lag and had to IM the merchant and have the product delivered. It is very frustrating. Also, some malls are just TOO big. You spend 30 minutes trying to LOCATE a store in a maze of hallways.

OH! We are allowed to ADVERTISE here :)
Then by all means visit Madison Square Plaza on Elite Island! (with all of the features I mentioned earlier)

Yeah, but Sio... Soylent Green is newbies, only having been in SL for a month, I am not sure I qualify but I think I do, and I definately don't want to be a recycled week old green hamburger patty sold in a vending machine at your mall!! <laughs>

Not all newbies, Jess... as shown by the fact you're still here.

I liked several of your options, but I chose simplicity. I like to get in and get out. I want to be able to see the products, and enjoy the surroundings, but not be overwhelmed with clutter and chaos. Being close to a telehub is nice, but not essential. I would rather fly to a good mall, then land in one and bump into tons of clutter as soon as I rez in. I refuse to shop at a mall that trys to engulf you with buildings and products.

Lol please keep advertising to a minimum, everyone loves his mall (well, maybe not the ones that build eyesores just because they don't wanna put any effort in them), we already know that :P

My option was not included. I never shop in RL or SL malls. Incidentally, when i go to a shop, if I can't get inside, ie entrance is not obvious etc, within a short time I fly away.

for the most part i don't care for malls. i hate waiting eons for everything to rezz & the spend the next 20 minutes trying to find the store that i am looking for. i usually get frustrated & leave. i'm on a mission, i know what i want & i hate having to wander around trying to find it.

I can't stand malls. They're dense and poorly organized more often than not. Shooping via traditional layouts is tedious in Second Life.

Stuff like SLexchange is a godsend. I browse at decent speeds in a format I'm comfortable with. I don't even need to be in-world.

I avoid malls. I'll always choose a creator's specialty shop over a mall, or alternately SLexchange.

I normally shop on the merchant main store as well.. but more than actual shopping place i feel malls useful even as giant billboards to attain visibility, more than sales.

Personally I don't go to malls and I owned one :p Mine was set up as a village though not stacks of cubes. There are some nice malls out there but I prefer to go to someones main store if the have one.

Yeah, a mall is a good chance to show some good building (i could name some, for instance Centre Ville, or Promenade Mall) and to actually add something to the surroundings instead of ruining them.

I found places like Umber/Midnight City are convenient, because you have more than one designer. And it's fun to walk around and peek into each shop. I also like Indigo's style, where you can stand in the middle of the building, circle your cam around, and buy everything up. And then there's places like in island sims where it's just that store and it's so prettiful. L'Utopia, I think was one place I like to loiter in.

Also I like shopping where there's more to do than shop. Even if it's just sitting around. I like looking around at other things. Something nice to take pictures of. That sort.

I prefer merchants' own shops if I can't find something I am looking for on SL Exchange. :D

You didn't include these:

I choose where to shop based upon the quality of the merchandise offered there. This is the top priority.

I shop at a certain location because I have a shop there myself, so I'm already hanging around. I always do some shopping at a mall where I have a shop of my own.

I'll also tend to shop at a certain location because a friend of mine has a shop there, often while I'm loitering around waiting for my friend to set up a display.

I choose where to shop because a search of Find or a notice on the forums told me what I want to buy is there.

I shop at a place that catches my eye when I'm flying my plane or sailing my boat and there's a good place to land or dock.

Here's what I consider when I decide to rent a shop:

I'm allowed to run particle scripts (I sell some items that generate particles)
Traffic
The other shops there look okay
The mall isn't hideous and confusing
The mall owner is someone I'm willing to do business with
It's convenient for me to go there
The rent is reasonable
My location has good visibility (I like the end spot by the road, for example)
Extra consideration for locations where I don't have to join another group to set up shop
Extra consideration for a good spot to land my plane
Extra consideration for a mall I already visit or find myself near frequently

Kim: i didnt include overall quality of the products because it doesnt normally depends on the owner of the mall, moreover the average mall is so varied in the products it sells that the average quality is kinda flattened between malls (they all have good and bad in them).
