http://www.savetoby.com/The multiple levels of depravity of this make me laugh about twice a day, so I thought I would share it with everyone. Paypal even cancelled his account. I am guessing it is due to the controversial treatment of Toby, emotional extortion etc. (I am 99% sure this is just a scam and that the perpetrator loves his bunny very much. Please do not worry excessively about Toby's welfare) I have a… um…friend… that is thinking of doing this in SL. Would this be against the TOS?

That's just f*cked up. Totally.
I'm not against eating animals (tasty!), BUT parading them around for donations OR ELSE you will eat them is just disgusting.
To top it off... seems this person is uncomfortable in having thier personal info out there:

I was about to send Toby a teleport to the Off-Topic forum until I got to the last sentence of your post. I think that's a relevant question about inworld behavior. In the TOS - Section 5 (User Conduct), Subsection 5.1 (Participant Conduct): 5.1 Participant Conduct. In addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not:
...
(vii) upload, post, email or otherwise transmit any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation; I think an inworld type of "Save Toby" campaign would probably fall under that section and not be allowed. P.S. To help alleviate the trauma caused by people reading about "Save Toby," here is a happy healthy bunny with a pancake hat.

You know, I'm going to sound really heartless, but... who cares if some idiot eats a rabbit? Rabbit is delicious prepared the correct way. It can taste a bit gamey, though, and really, it's not very safe to eat a wild rabbit since you don't know what sort of diseases it might have.
When I was growing up, we had some neighbors a few miles away who raised rabbits to sell for meat. Heck, my parents raise cattle. What's the difference? An animal is an animal.

It's not about eating the rabbit - it's about using the rabbit to pull at peoples emotions and let those emotions pry open the wallet. Anyway.. Snopes says its a hoax.

As I kid I watched my grandfather skin and gut some rabbits he raised, right in front of my eyes. Surprisingly I wasn't grossed out or horrified. I really don't care if he does eat the bunny, but using that idea that he will eat it to get not just a little money, but already 20k, is just wrong. Have you(anyone) seen the merchandise he's selling? He has the Save Toby logo on a thong! *gags* EDIT: Ok, good, it's a hoax.

He presents the rabbit as a beloved pet - and most people (well, in the US at any rate) see a huge difference between a companion animal and a food animal. (Food animals have cellophane for skin. ) It's emotional extortion - not everyone is susceptible to it, but I think most are. If the PayPal screenshot is true, then at least enough are. EDIT: Or would be emotional extortion if it wasn't a hoax. (ewps!)

But, how can people be so infinitely gullible about all this? That's just beyond me. My parents tell me that when I was small, I used to watch my uncle skin coyotes he'd trapped (they were considered a pest and a threat to livestock, and he got paid a bounty for them by some government entity). I vaguely remember this, but the thought of watching anybody do that today makes me rather squeamish, I must admit. I can't even clean shrimp to cook... eeewwwww.

I'm going to get the Watership Down bunnies after this guy. Those bunnies are fierce. They're hares actually, I think... hares with big fangs and red eyes and long legs.

If it's just an internet joke and he's not really taking money then it's kind of funny.
If on the other hand he's actually taking money it's a con or emotional extortion and both are very nasty things to do.
If someone in SL had a campaign where they did not spam anyone but posted signs (where people have allowed them to post signs) that say something like "Save this Frog from the Blender", donate Lindens or he gets the blade - I'd probably find that funny.
But then, consider the source. I'm Joe Cartoon's love child.

I remember that, watched the movie when I was little. My favorite show~ Those hares scared me to death, and that "Bright Eyes" song made me cry...because I KNOW what happened... And I remember the sun too, Neph....that was creepy.

It's really a valid question, aside from the humorous side of it all. Are "fundraising campaigns" like this allowable inworld?
Typcally, LL does not get involved with "policing" any fundraising activities inworld (like the tsumani fundraising that happened a short time ago).
But I'm not quite sure where the line is drawn on something like this, which appears to almost be a form of extortion or a pyramid scheme. I've pinged other Lindens who will get back to us all on a more clear "line" about this all.
P.S. In the meantime, if I don't get collector cards from all the Lindens, I swear I am going to EAT this tunafish sandwich.

I would say pyramid schemes and extortion are *bad* but normally Linden Lab doesn't get involved in those sort of disputes afaik. Fundraising for charity is fine - but there is of course no guarantee that it actually gets there (though of course it did in the case of the tsunami events).

On a tangential note: I think when satire on the web doesn't translate well, the hoaxes and scams tend to confuse people -- in addition to all manner of reactions -- and detract some of them from getting involved with actual charities. Having to keep asking "Is it real? Is it real? Is it a joke or are these guys con artists?" really wears down some people's generosity, and if you've ever been scammed, then you'll feel how you feel. PT Barnum was one thing but spamscams are another, and with so many copycats jumping on the bandwagon (you can expect imitators), it gets even more confuzzling. I'm glad to have sites like snopes.com clarify the truth and bust down the doors of ignorance... it's a puzzling enough world as it is! So who's going to be cited for Prim Abuse in the Circus Cubicus? @_@
