I had to HACK this stupid program because it believed that shiny was unsupported on my graphics card. That's how desperate I was for my shiny!
Now that it's forcibly enabled, and working great, I might add, you'll have to pry my shiny from my cold dead hands. I'll never part with it!

I agree LOL.. i have none unchecked because it lags my client, for months i was lagging to the point of not being able to move during events and diffrent sims, i unchecked my local lighting and restarted the client, i was amazed at the differance my avatar moved i was no longer lagging like i was just thought i would share lol

I'd better be seeing more people saying they have 'shiny' enabled, or I'm going to visit each violator and rezz a shiny building on your ass.
Seriously though, shiny does make the world look a lot better - try it! Local lighting...you can probably judiciously enable/disable as you prefer.
One thing I noticed is cutting my disk cache from 1GB to 500MB seemed to improve SL responsiveness, believe it or not. Odd, eh?

For a long time I had local lighting enabled all the time, I swore by it. I have a high end computer and video card, but still at events everything would slow to a crawl to the point of ridiculousness. I turned off local lighting for the hell of it, and the difference it makes on performance in SL is staggering. Even at events with 50 people, I am still not laggy. I have not been able to bring myself to turn it back on. I wish they would make it an on the fly option to enable/disable instead of requiring a restart of the client.
Other than that, I have shiny turned on - I am not sure why it defaults to off even on high end cards - I don't think the autodetection picks very good settings for anyone. Shadows don't make much of a difference. Anisotropic filtering was not included on the list, but I never use that - it seems to cause as much of a hit as local lighting.
I really hope that the new graphics engine gives us the benefits of local lighting without the performance hit, because it is a beautiful thing when turned on.
