Yesterday I met this chick who was whining about not being able to pay for SL because her card had been maxed out on There. Apparently she spent about $400 real dollars on virtual crap in that place. Makes me wonder if LL shouldnt be doing the same thing.

As a former There user, I can't let this thread go by without posting. However, Catherine's eloquent posts really echo many of my feelings, so I shall refrain from redundancy.
I do know that the Lindens are trying to find ways to bring more "socializers" into SL, though...

I hope they don't start doing a pay for virtual stuff with real money thing in SL, I didn't like the idea at all with There and is one of the reasons I don't go there that much. Sure it brings in money alot for the company, but I really dislike the idea as a consumer.

Heh, I will NEVER pay real money for a few pixels on a computer screen. Online subscriptions or upgrades are one thing; paying for a few bits stored on a remote computer somewhere is another. I'm not "cheap" by a long shot, but if I found out that a game I wanted to play charged for each and every little thing you needed in game, I'd be outta there damn quick. How are people drawn into this??? There has to be some reason that people get pulled into this.
Hearing about people playing There spending hundreds or thousands(?!?!?!) of dollars on virtual CRAP sickens me. Everquest may have been called "Evercrack" more than once, but I'm just waiting for hell to break loose once people realize the level of ripoff going on in There. It's bad enough making people pay for a "virtual shirt" in There--but someone mentioned $5???? Imagine seeing this game on 20/20....heh.
"There" may have a few things functioning better than SL does (since the game's level of programming complexity is 100 times lower than SL's is), but charging all that money for what they "sell" comes off as totally wrong. If this is happening how can anyone in their right mind say SL is too expensive?
I can't believe there's that many people willing to part from their money so easily...it's almost beyond comprehension for me.

I read somewhere that "There" was trying to make a exchangable money thing, or something. The idea is that you can for example, make a shirt, sell it for so many There-Bucks and then take those There-Bucks and convert them back to US Dollars. That concept is pretty cool, except for the fact that its not reverse convertable, its only one way right now. So that could be a reason for the major inflation, is so that they get enough money for it to be reverse convertable. I also heard that every There-Buck has a real US dollar counter-part, I doubt that very much though for several reasons.

There is already one or two game-sites where money goes both ways. You can convert money you earn in game for real US dollars. Its like 1 dollar US for 1oo dollars in game. Or 1000 in game dollars. Sorry I forget. Can't remember the name either.

Does Project Entropia have reversible money? It was next on my list to try after Second Life - but, of couse, I've gotten stuck here and never moved on down the list!
