From: Prokofy Neva It's really NOT attractive. The recipients of all this "help" find the stench of self-celebration overpowering. Does that mean we should stop helping people? Are land purcahse notecards the only selfless form of help in SL? It's all so sad and confusing.

From: Eboni Khan Are land purcahse notecards the only selfless form of help in SL? Those arrogant notecards need to be taken down a peg. Shame on them, hiding behind pseudo-altruistic monkiers as "How do I make money" and "How do I find land" and all that...

Every single one of those people on that original list, without exception, harrassed me when I was a newbie and was banned from SL for at least one week by the Lindens. Now we'll get to see pages and pages of people complaining they or others aren't on the list, and pages and pages of people comforting them and adding them to the list sus gentry. It's enough to make me join the anti-FIC brigade on principle.

Aw willow, you have helped me smile on a couple of stressful days! Put yourself on the list!
But seriously, this is a list compiled from a forum giving shoutouts to people. In point of fact ther eare thousands of people who don't post on the forums, some of them have helped others too. And also people's experiences of an individual can be radically different.

Well, I don't think a little narcissism is necessarily out of order. Kind of like a group of hospital volunteers having an annual party to recognize their work, where they pat each other on the back and celebrate what they have done. Good for morale.
Of course the list isn't inclusive, cause of course most people are helpful. I am very helpful myself, so I will just add myself to the list, lol.
As to the person who said every single one of those people had been mean to them, that can't be true, because a couple of people were put on that list by me, and are little known.
For those who may not remember, the list was about "people who helped you when you first started." That's why some of those I nominated weren't well known.

From: Hiro Queso It's a silly list really. There are thousands of helpful people in SL, most of which do not frequent the forums. Exactly

While I think the intent behind most of these lists is usually good, when I see a thread like this, it just makes me cringe. There are so many people who are helpful / good builder / good designer / good scripter / good sheep f*cker / good whatever, that you could never mention them all. I’m not arguing that those who DO make these lists are not worthy, because I usually tend to agree. I just think the lists do more harm than good, and there have been a ton of them lately. I kind of equate it to charity – there are those who make a big show of giving money to charity, and there are those who do it quietly. While the end result is the same, the motivation is different.

no, not every person who has been helpful in sl was listed in the orginal thread. and i only listed the ones mentioned in the original thread.
only 45 posts listing names were in the original thread. ~120 names listed + all the lindens who help people. that means there are way more helpful people because there are way more then 45 posters in the forums.
there aren't many last name duplicates. there are old name and new names in the list.
that means that helpful people come out of every wave of immigration into sl.
if you just read the forums, you might get the impression that there aren't any helpful people in sl. i think it's worth noting that there are people out there who help people as concrete evidence that sl isn't like the heat in the forums.
and it's also worth noting that people aren't one dimensional. just because you don't like someone, or you don't like what they post, that doesn't mean they don't do good, kind, or worthwhile things.
and the people who do help people rarely get recognized. they deserve a little recognition for adding to sl through action and deed.
and if you recall someone who helped you, you could go im them and thank them in person. i mean, more than a few of us would have left sl if we did not get a little help to cope with sl, or if someone didn't show us something cool to do when we first showed up, or were otherwise helpful.
all this talk in the forums barely matters, and probably doesn't help sl much. but these people, they matter, and they help sl.

Stone I think your post accomplished a very good thing, people red the list and gave some recognition to those who aren't on it. Maybe everyone replying to this thread should take it upon themselves to mention a name that isnlt on the list, but should be. Its ovbviously nowhere near exhaustive, obviously, but then it doens't have to be.
So I'll add Jenn Reitveld who is my IRL cousin, and instead of beating her silly with a pillow for getting me hooked on this game in the first place (you deserve it JJ and you know it!) I'll thank her for all the help she gave me getting me sorted out in the first place.

From: StoneSelf Karuna that means that helpful people come out of every wave of immigration into sl.
Well thats kinda obvious isn't it? You get good/bad, helpful/unhelpful people from all nations, cultures, walks of life and ages. From: StoneSelf Karuna if you just read the forums, you might get the impression that there aren't any helpful people in sl. i think it's worth noting that there are people out there who help people as concrete evidence that sl isn't like the heat in the forums.
I don't get that impression. Have a quick look through the building or scripting tips forums for example. From: StoneSelf Karuna and it's also worth noting that people aren't one dimensional. just because you don't like someone, or you don't like what they post, that doesn't mean they don't do good, kind, or worthwhile things.
Sure, but it works both ways From: StoneSelf Karuna and the people who do help people rarely get recognized. they deserve a little recognition for adding to sl through action and deed.
Most people who help others do not do it for, nor want recognition. If they do, then there is something fundamentally wrong there. From: StoneSelf Karuna and if you recall someone who helped you, you could go im them and thank them in person. i mean, more than a few of us would have left sl if we did not get a little help to cope with sl, or if someone didn't show us something cool to do when we first showed up, or were otherwise helpful.
I hope we are all of an age to know when to be appreciative and thankful From: StoneSelf Karuna all this talk in the forums barely matters, and probably doesn't help sl much. but these people, they matter, and they help sl.
I know your intentions are in the right place, and good. It just comes across the wrong way. To me at least, sorry

From: Hiro Queso Most people who help others do not do it for, nor want recognition. i quite agree, but i think it's good for the soul to give and recieve thanks. especially when it is to richly deserved.

From: StoneSelf Karuna i quite agree, but i think it's good for the soul to give and recieve thanks. especially when it is to richly deserved. That's great, but this isn't the way to do it. If it was a list of people you personally wanted to thank, it would be a little different. As soon as you create a list you create problems with it. I see some of the most helpful people in SL absent from the list. I also see one person who is a notorious griefer in the list. It just doesn't mean much *shrug*.

As soon as you create a list you create problems with it. I see some of the most helpful people in SL absent from the list. I also see one person who is a notorious griefer in the list. It just doesn't mean much *shrug*. i suppose. it's a place to start. the good should not be the enemy of the perfect. and vice versa. if you feel someone is missing, go thank them. or mention them. or both. the thing about notorious griefers is that they can still be helpful. it doesn't make sense, but it happens. people are complex. just because they didn't help you or griefed, doesn't mean they didn't help someone and that that person doesn't feel grateful. perhaps being thanked for being helpful will encourage them to be more helpful and less griefing. all or nothing isn't a tenable position when it comes to people. people, and groups/list of people will not be wholely one thing or another. withholding a blessing/grace/thanks from a mostly deserving group (in one's own eyes) because of a few unworthies seems unfair to those who deserve our gratitude. you can focus on the flaws or you can focus on the beauty. i think there's been more of the former than the latter of late.

I saw one person on the list that was banned permanently but was an extremely generous and helpful person.
funny how that person ended up on the same list with a bunch of Lindens. lol
