OK one comment from me...
See for me, the thing about "Death Metal" is, if I can't understand the guy singing because he is growling into the mic in some idiotic "I like to think I am posessed by a demon" voice, or screaming so loud you can't understand what he's saying (and I don't mean occasionally, I mean for the WHOLE song), or the bass notes are so low and repetetive that it washes everything else in the song out, then I don't really consider that to be GOOD music, but that's just my opinion. Heavy, mucky, repetetive single note playing is NOT what makes something HARD METAL, in my opinion.

As much as I am a huge fan of Metal/Classic Metal, I do like quite a few of the nu-metal and Death Metal bands out there, don't get me wrong, but it's getting harder and harder to separate the crap from the decent, innovative stuff.

Out of Kiamat's list, I would pick out these for stuff I like:

All Out War
Kittie (RAWR)
Atreyu
Chimaira
Devil Driver
Hatebreed
Obituary
Lamb of God (damn good band)
Meshuggah
Napalm Death
Sepultura
Bolt Thrower

I would toss in some:

Korn (every diet needs some Korn!)
Coal Chamber
Mudvayne (they keep getting better IMHO)
Skipknot
Drowning Pool
Lacuna Coil
Shadows Fall
Stratovarius
Nightwish
Iced Earth

I like all those 'cept Stratovarius and Iced Earth.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and it's getting harder and harder to draw the line between all the genres... so, being as bored at work as I am today, I made up some kind of list to categorize cuz there are so many damn varieties/genres of rock/metal/punk out there now....

Here, I'll start off:

I see it as 3 main "Branches" of "ROCK" : those being "Basic" Rock, Heavy Metal, and Punk Rock. Yes of course, some of the bands I list as examples can be cross-listed under various sub-genres, but I just put em in where I felt they fall best according to my own music tastes :p Nor do these examples necessarily represent my favorites in each genre!

Classic Rock - Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, CCR, Alice Cooper, Steppenwolf, Santana
Psychadelic Rock - Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Jimi Hendrix
"Basic" Rock (aka Rock N Roll) - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, George Thorogood
Hard Rock - Queens Of The Stone Age, Creed, Van Halen
Southern Rock - Lynard Skynard, Alabama
Modern Rock - Evanescence, Incubus, Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach
Pop Rock - Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Matchbox 20, Queen, Journey

Grunge - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog
Post-Grunge - Audioslave, Cake, Collective Soul, Fastball
Emo - Dashboard Confessional, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Switchfoot

Classic Heavy Metal - Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, AC/DC, Motorhead
Heavy Metal - Soundgarden, Guns n Roses, Scorpions, Metallica, Megadeth, Metal Church
Power Metal - Iron Maiden, Fate's Warning, Alice in Chains
Glam/Hair Metal - Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Whitesnake, Faster Pussycat

Prog/Progressive - Rush, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Kamelot, Lacuna Coil
Space Rock - Godspeed You Black Emperor, The Verve, Stereolab

Thrash/Speed Metal - Exodous, Anthrax, Overkill, Pantera, SOD, Testament, Nuclear Assault
Hardcore - Agnostic Front, Kamikaze, Underoath
Grind/Grindcore - Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death

NuMetal - System of a Down, Korn, Disturbed, Kittie, Godsmack, Static-X

Death Metal - Lamb of God, Decide, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom
Satanic Metal - Venom, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Bathory, Morbid Angel
Black Metal - Danzig, Emperor, Mayhem
Doom Metal - My Dying Bride, November's Doom, Anathema
Gothic Metal/Darkwave - HIM, The Cult, Christian Death, Inkubus Sukkubus

Symphonic/Operatic - Nightwish, Stratovarius, Within Temptation, Therion

Christian Rock - Stryper (GAGGGGG!)
Christian Metal - Tourniquet, Guardian

Totally Unclassifiable or Theatrical Rock - Primus, GWAR, Marilyn Manson, Lungworm, The Mars Volta

Classic Punk - The Ramones, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Sex Pistols, New York Dolls
Punk Rock - Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Buzzcocks, Black Flag, Dead Milkmen, Murphy's Law
Skate Punk - DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, GBH, Screeching Weasel
Goth Punk - Siouxie & the Banshees, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, The Damned, Morrissey
Modern Punk Rock - NOFX, Green Day, Blink 182, The Offspring

Cross-Genre mixes:
Rap/Rock - Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Everlast, ICP, Rage Against the Machine
Ska - Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Madness, The Specials
Ska Punk/Rock - No Doubt
Electro-Punk/Electroclash - Atari Teenage Riot, Mindless Self-Indulgence
Industrial - Ministry, Nine Inch Nails

OK "Screw u guys, I'm goin home!" :p

Mostly right, Artillo, but a few objections.
1) Any band that uses a cow bell is a Hard Rock band. Period. That includes GnR.
2) Lamb of God is not a Death Metal band. Just look at the lyrics. Moreover, the music style isn't right. I defy you to show me where they use a single blast beat. hehe

I don't post much on these forums but this thread caught my eye...

I've always loved metal and have become even more of a metalhead in recent years. I like stuff all the way from the well-known classic stuff to the most obscure underground extremes, and many of the sub-genres.

Some faves:

Black Sabbath
My Dying Bride
Summoning
Ulver
High on Fire
Sleep
Enslaved
Windir
Wyrd
In The Woods
Weakling
Blut Aus Nord
Xasthur
Agalloch
Empyrium
Runemagick
Godflesh
Opeth
Celtic Frost
Abigor
Bal-Sagoth
Shape of Despair
Theatre of Tragedy
Emperor
Moonsorrow
Arcturus
Motorhead
Kyuss

I like some stuff from most of the metal sub-genres out there except for so-called nu-metal which doesn't do much for me.

By the way - here's an online resource all metalheads / headbangers should know about: Encyclopedia Metallum: The Metal Archives. Great way to learn about bands, read reviews etc...

Anyone have any "power metal" recommendations? That's a sub-genre I haven't delved into much... aside from Iron Maiden who seem to be pioneers of the form.

I'll have to hang out in Transylvania sometime when I'm less of a hermit.. :)

Metalhead, yes, no question I am. :D
Favorites:
Slayer
Metallica
Megadeth
Sepultura
Death
Carcass
Slipknot

Anything heavy and somewhat fast with at least some musical clarity is good by me.

Everything needs MORE COWBELL! LOL
http://www.geekspeakweekly.com/cowbell/

Well Kiamat, yer def. right about the LoG lyrics! :D Like I said, there's plenty of overlap in categoriez :p I just think they sound "deathy" :D

Besides, there's always room for MORE COWBELL though!

My damn cable was out most of the weekend but I did happen to catch VH1's "The Greatest: 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock", which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Awesome thread! Good to see theres still alot of people out there that appreciate Iron Maiden. Myself I mostly enjoy their albums w. Bruce Dickinson and his operatic vocal stylings. I believe he actually sang Opera for some time before and during his time w. I.M.

I just wanted to drop a few old School metal groups that still have the edge to make them worth listening to even today:

Pile Driver (Metal Inquisition)

Metal Church (Self titled Album or The Dark)

Testament (The Legacy and The New Order)

Anthrax (Among the Living, Armed and Dangerous and Fistful of Metal)

and for the grand finale...

S.O.D. (Speak English or Die)

** Disclaimer. This album title does not reflect my views on the world so if you're looking for something to fuel your jump to the "look at me, Look at me" forum pulpit, keep looking.

Adding any of these wonderful albums to your metal collection is certain to give you years of listening pleasure! Start at the bottom and work up if you plan to buy any of these.

These are very sad times to be an American but where is the rage among the citizenry? Where are the flag wavers who so laud the freedoms symbolized by a flag and written by quill pens in our constitution? Why are we not rallying in the streets against this sort of attrocity? I used to play the hell out of all my Anthrax cassette tapes in my car! LOL

and SOD - Speak English or Die OMG YES! My fave track off that:

The Ballad of Jimi Hendrix

"Broomp breemp brooomp breep brommp breep brooomp breep YER DEAD."

Actually it's amazing how "Fuck the Middle East" is still such a timely song, and that album came out back in 1985!!!!

Pussy-Whipped and Pre-Menstrual Princess Blues are great songs to play to piss off your girlfriend!

Can you do.... the Milano Mosh?
