Scaring away new users from SL with rudeness and sarcasm should be a bannable offense

No I was discribing the people who dog other people.

Hey I dog people all the time and I don't even wear glasses!

No, I wasn't one of the newbies.

Yes you were. I remember your thread about World of Warcraft and how beautiful it looked compared to SL, and at the time I was struck by how rude some people (RYEN JADE) were to you, which is why I made a point to reply to your question. Blaze is right, there is a weird tendency for some established players to act like an arrogant jackass to a new player who makes a suggestion or asks a question, and it is rather lame. It happens a lot in the feature suggestions forum - people often ask for the same features others have suggested over time, and without fail, there will be the "this has been asked a million times" post from someone, which adds nothing to the thread and makes the original poster feel stupid.

Sarcasm is a regional dialect where I live. No one I know unless speaking to someone not from this area ever tags anything with " I was being sarcastic" etc. It is just sort of understood. :D

Be gentle to newbies, that's all I ask.

I used to be very helpful to any new people who showed up in Riiki (or Deimos formerly) until:

1 - I got burned by loser people rolling up alts to promote their drama du jour.

2 - I got hassled by griefers.

3 - I was annoyed by people acting like 14 year olds with the manners of a 3 year old.

Now I have a lot less patience. If you show up and exhibit good manners, you are very likely to get a warm reception. Show up and act like an asshat and being ignored is the best you will experience.

I suppose this is a natural development of SL getting bigger. Somewhat like living in a large city as opposed to a small town or rural area.

I'm with Surreal on this.

I like to welcome with open arms, and personally have little tolerance for rudeness. Especially after I have communicated clearly that I'm uncomfortable with it, and it continues.

I also don't like the following:

-Lack of emoticons or gestures to convey additional meaning when possible and quite possibly helpful. ;)

-Snide, sarcastic, or hidden double-meanings meant with malice -- which, by the way, I have no logical frame to decipher... I just get bad vibes! This would include jealous, envious, and Emperor's New Clothes-type situations. Hey, if I'm jealous of someone, least I can do is humble myself before them and let them know how awed I am by their mad skillz, instead of holing up hostility!

-Overly bad OR good spellingrammar COUPLED with rudeness. Sorry, I can't stand snobs who seriously talk like the Architect from the Matrix, unless I'm looking for a good chuckle. Been there, done that, and I was among the worst chinstrokers so I'm in the process of reforming now. The world has enough problems. :)

-Those who keep on talking without really listening what I have to say. I'm interested to hear others's thoughts + feelings, and good communication really is a two-way street.

-Self-justification for repeated offensive behavior. It's bad enough that someone is rude, but it's even worse when they dig themselves a deeper ditch by trying to rationalize and hash it out. Sorry, doesn't work -- lame-o!

-Those who are actively present in an area and not (BUSY) but who don't reply to me saying "hello" -- while first impressions may be deceiving, I've found that in my personal experience, this counts for a lot in the long-term. It's not hard to be nice, really.

Thankfully, those I've encountered who fall into one or more of the above categories in Second Life are underwhelmingly few. When it comes to dealing with people on here, I do it on a uniquely individual basis and I use a mix of logical reason but go with my intuition as well. I may lack common sense but I can learn certain other things about us as people.

I choose to accentuate and focus on the positive, and that's what I'll continue to do. :D

Oh, since Siggy posted, I have another point I'd like to add please. :)

It's very important to keep a person's collective history -- past, present, future, and beyond ;) -- in perspective. Time does tell a lot of things.

Newbies and others who were uninformed have mistakenly thought Siggy, Lordfly, Steller, and others to be GREEFER KIN because the former didn't bother to ask questions to the latter, and just struck out into the darkness. In fact, Steller Sunshine's current profile is quite apropros!

There's not much of an excuse for repeated ignorance, and so, it helps to get to know people personally. This again, is another reason why I am such a strong advocate for studying SL history and culture. I pay my respects to those who have come before me and shaped the world.

I don't know about "reputation" but eh... it's unwise to leap before one looks. These are all pieces of the puzzle, and words need to be put into context.

Fun's fun *throws flaming toilet seat at Siggy* :D

lol, you're right, but I honestly didn't remember that. No I was thinking of some poor newbie, obviously very young and very excited by SL's potential, who suggested rpg and action games within SL. He got hamstrung by a well-known player because examples of these games were being developed already. And then another well-known player metaphorically picked him up off the ground, dusted him off, and patted him on the back.

Kind of like the Wild West around here sometimes. But I can understand how established players feel, with all the newbie farmers building fences across their ranges. ;)

hehe.. This is actually a pet peeve of mine. Drives me bonkers! In any situation. It is also why you will rarely (I think I can count on one hand the times I have done it), rarely see me post to a thread when I have not read each and every post in it already. The times when I have, I am still in the process of reading the thread but for some reason had to state something and usually it is off-topic anyway. hehe

Nothing irks me more than someone saying "well, I don't have time to read this whole thread, but here is my opinion". It just makes me want to say "pfft! Why should I listen to you if you won't listen to me or others". :p

YES! OMG Pen... holy moly... that's beyond asking for trouble -- that's BEGGING for it. Not only you feel the same way. I consider it disrespectful. I know a lot of our friends do, rolling our eyes at the redundancy that comes up.

There is a certain irony to that. But then again, I've come to embrace contradictions. ;)

(I mean, how many times in a longwinded thread do the same points get restated again and again? Sometimes done for emphasis, sometimes done 'cuz peeps didn't read them in the first place? GAHHHHH!)

Hehe, I am guilty of this, at times. Some days, I only have a little bit of time to catch up with the forums. After reading the first couple of pages, I may post my own reply vs. reading every single post in a multi-page thread. That said, point taken ;).

haha.. awww. I still adore you Paolo. :D

Also, the loophole to this is to just not state that you haven't read it all. LOL .. I think that even if I can figure out a person hasn't read the whole thread before posting, it doesn't feel like such a "slap" if they don't make a specific effort to point that fact out. :p

haha.. Yes!! Glad I'm not the only one. And I certainly don't dislike the people that do this, just the action hits a nerve. :p

Yeah, there's flipsides to all of these things.

Sometimes, the bulk of the thread is so redundant and has outlived its usefulness -- so why would you waste your life reading all of that anyway? ;)

Here's another pet peeve: quotes-within-quotes, for the very reason that nested quotations tends to lead to mass misinterpretation and bitter flamewars.

*hugz*

Being that I am new I haven't yet found my way around - but is it really the type of place where sarcasm can get members banned? Not really, right?

No, I think blaze was just being a bit dramatic. Be as sarcastic as you want :)

I been a little rude of late, but I can't help it. I detest minors. Specially minors in a place where they don't belong. And so many posts anymore SOUND like they were written by a minor. I am close to having a breakdown or a meltdown or something. *Whimper* :(
