Scaring away new users from SL with rudeness and sarcasm should be a bannable offense

Ok, this is my rant of the day.

But I think if a new user comes around with new ideas and brimming with enthusiasm and you reply with nothing but sarcasm and vitriol, you should be banned from the forums.

You may now return to your regular programming.

I know what brought that on. I've seen several instances of that kind of behavior here in the forums over the last couple of days: established players with attitudes toward enthusiastic newbies because the newbies had ideas that someone else had already done.

How were the newbies supposed to know?

Worth noting, however, that in each case another established player warmly complimented the newbie and encouraged him/her to keep thinking and trying.

No, I wasn't one of the newbies.

Sometimes people ridicule and diminish others in order to try to elevate themselves. That's the way insecurity manifests, and it's really hostile.

It's not only with newbies either - there been varying degrees of drama - but i've also seen it worse.

Sometime there is too much miss-information that gets bandied about as though it was factual and it will sometimes take on a life of it's own.

Dynamics of diss-info.

Let's face it. Avatars and forum trolls are controlled by human beings. I sometimes wonder why we are surprised by human manifestations in game or in forum. You could neg rate the offending parties for their lack of forum decorum (hey! I made a funny!), but more often than not, that will just bring you unwanted grief.

People who did that in newbie areas back in Activeworlds would be bot-ejected from the area after being warned.

It's not just the forums newbies are treated with a bit of .......let me call it "demeaning" behavior. While it is true that there are many helpful and encouraging people in the game itself (thank you, youkowwhoyouare), my first few weeks on SL were rather sad. I had to buy 3 pieces of land before I found one that would allow me to try my poor building talents without my neighbors wanting to a) instantly buy me out b) donate my land to their cause and c) stand around laughing at my feeble attempts to line up two walls.

After 2 weeks I was ready to quit. Then I stumbled onto someone's fantasy build and thankfully the owner called me over.....

Be gentle to newbies, that's all I ask.

In Activeworlds, newbies were kicked around more than a FIFA regulation soccerball. I remember my time in Activewords, 90% of it was spend trying to find places where I was actually able to stay for more than 5 minutes. The only places I ever found that didn't frown upon any newbie was the Activeworlds-controlled regions. The private regions now, was a completely different matter - xenophobia and suspicion galore.

Could people also be more curt with new players on the forums because....

- the new person didn't bother to try searching the forums first for useful information
- there are players with several alts
- some posters don't bother to ask nicely, but demand people help them

Also worth noting, that even *if* it's been done before, a lot of times, it is possible for it to be done better.

OHH OHH OHH
I know why they do that.
They have no RL and so in between retaping their glasses that were broke again when they ran into the door on the way to their special ed class, they come in here and belittle new players because they think that they are soo cool for being in SL longer then the new guy.

I'm not a doctor. But I play one on TV.

Are you putting down people that have broken or taped glasses and those requiring special education?? *attempts to drum up more forum drama*

Actually, some newbs do come into the forums and start off on a rude foot, and others have the bad luck to get some of the more well known grumpy forum posters responding to them, but for the most part I see folks try to be helpful.

Some people assume you haven't looked up information to begin with. Which I find rude. Most people post for help or ideas on forums as a last resort - that is most. So how does that warrant rude replies to everyone? I've found that there are several people who troll the forums for people asking for help and instantly shoot them down. However, there are great and helpful responses from others - thankfully. I just don't see the point of being a complete jerk to someone trying to learn about this game.

Also consider that... some people would like to look up information but haven't yet. I'm actually surprised how many newcomers to SL that I've met inworld do NOT know:

-where the Forums are
-what New World Notes is
-where to access their account history

I thought this information, for me, easy enough to find, and I'm not sure what would further facilitate access to these resources, but......

I believe QUICK LINKS to those places from within SL's Help menu would be a great idea! (After all, doesn't Script Help... launch an HTML document?)

I'm pretty sure the forums are hidden away a bit by LL for various reasons.
