What has happened to the road system in SL?

My primary sim is Mavericks, which is at the end of the road system that was put in when the first new group of sims came out - the road ends at my driveway. I have always been a huge fan of driving in SL - even with the lag, it is a fun experience to drive around the sims and see stuff you would not oridinarily see.

While driving a new car I bought yesterday, I noticed that significant chunks of the road in Noyo and elsewhere are missing, and overall the concept seems to have languished in obscurity. No one uses them. Has the road system been abandoned? I know that it is not quite ready for prime time, but I thought it was put there so the infrastructure would be around when the capabilities do catch up to make vehicles really useable. The road system has gone a long way toward making the sims feel a little less random - I would hate to see it just continue to decay the way many Linden builds have - the bridges and raised roadways are spectacular, and it would be a shame for them to go to waste.

Yeah the roads are in a bad shape, obviously not enough linden taxes to maintain the road crews.

But, on top of that, who made that car? The texturing is nasty, nasty, nasty. Sorry, I know that's bad of me, but it's the only reaction I can muster.

EDIT: Oh no, it looks like I'm agreeing with Billy. The end is indeed, most definitely, nigh.

I agree, Cris. I don't use the roads because of lag usually, but when I try I usually end up falling through, or hit some barrier or another. I really hope SL vehicles get to the point where we need roads!

I wholeheardtedly agree, the road system needs a lot of restoring and expansion (expecially in many of the sims that currently are not served by any road, in wich linden land seems basically naked wasteland).

Want a car? (Shameless plug :P)

I suppose it is a matter of personal taste - I like the photorealistic textures used on them. I also have to say it is the best scripted car I have used, in terms of driving - it controls very well and has variable speed settings - most cars go way too fast and turn with no resistance, so they are hard to control. The interior especially has some amazing texture work - to each his own, I have several cars from the same designer - I can't think of the name, but it is in sponsored links.

I prefer completely prim designed cars with minimal texturing- my favorites are the Bugatti and Porsche models from Beckett Motors and Andrew Palmerstone's Audis - they also drive very well. The things they are able to do with 31 prims never cease to amaze me.

Billy, if you could make something like that, then shut up and do it instead of bashing someone else's work. An incredible amount of work went into the detail on the car - I will show you it in person - it is an odd angle in the screen shot, but it is not fair of you to just bash someone's work like that.

To go back to the subject at hand, am i the only one that gets the feeling that the lindens put a lot of work in decorating some sims (not only with roads, but with bridges, dams, trees and so forth) while others are completely empty.
Maybe some of them should begin decorate those "wasteland" sims as well, or if they really don't want to they could begin hiring good resident builders.

And no Lo, the car doesn't come with the hot girls, but you can buy the clothes they have on and be hot yourself (or put another hot girl inside them) :P

Yeah, I've seen a lot of really good photorealistic-textured cars, and maybe it's just the picture, but that doesn't look photorealistic at all - it just looks shoddy. If it's a well scripted car, then that's another thing entirely - often some of the best looking cars are pigs to control. Obviously pictures can't show how well a car handles.

I've always liked primmy cars and there are some with a nice mixture of photorealistic textures and prims that look amazing. As you say, 31 prims isn't much to play with to get the detail, so there's always a trade-off.

I've just been to look at the shop of the person who makes these cars, and I'm sorry but no - it looks no better in the "flesh". The textures don't join right inside, the prims are poorly aligned and the textures themselves are too low-quality to achieve what the designer is after (take a look at the back-end of the of the Viper - the textures cross over and are different colors!). I hate to bash, but when the designer is charging L$1900 for one of these, I'd have to say go check Whiptech or Cereal Milk's cars - much cheaper, drive really well and look so much better.

In most the sims without roads or incomplete roads the is Governor Linden road zoned land that runs through the sims.. someone just didn't add the road. It is very odd. I will frequently see a bridge without road on either side.. why bother with the bridge?

Did the road builder Linden quit or something? I would love to see a highway/road system through the sims.. it would be a lot of fun and give more purpose to owning a vehicle.

I agree on Cereal's quality, his cars are just plain awesome :) (and his hovercar mods are fun as hell)

i dont think the Lindens will ever develope wasteland left over in sims for roads as once the sim matures and residents move in... there is more lag, and its to hard for them to build raods (aww don't you just feel sorry for them.. NOT) I was once told (lol) that if a sim comes online without a road, it will never have a road. but i dont know how reliable that source was :P

I enjoy the occasional road trip as well.

The road in Noyo has been through the wringer. One day a whole stretch of road, from the Davenport border to the Noyo Rezzing area, just disappeared. I have a feeling that some of the land options on the Linden-owned land got changed and caused that section to get returned. I reported the disappearance and a few weeks later the current road was created. It doesn 't connect with the road in Davenport nor does it connect with the Noyou rez area very well. It doesn't resemble the original road very much and is much more angular. The original road had nice graceful curves and blended well with the other sections.

I'll send a request to have something more like the original roadway put back.
