Horse Thieves in SL, a plea to the SL Community..

To the SL Community,

Well..today I was told by a friend of mine that one of my Horses that I made WAY back last year was being given out as a Freebie, but also on closer examination of the the attached notecard that was in the Bottle that the horse was in, The note blatently gives credit to someone else for creating the horse. If you look at the item called, Maera/Horse you will see that the Creator is Soren Romulus. But I will not go into calling out the people who blatently took credit for my work and also seemed to either have Hacked it or Gotten a broken one, but I ask you, the community and those who feel that giving out my Maera/Horse in a Golden Shinning Genie Bottle, to please stop. I have informed the Lindens of this matter, but at this point it seems that over 100 copies of the horse as a freebie are out in the world. It is just a model I know and it isn't very expensive, but, I ask that it please not be given out to anyone else in any form and to those who took credit for my work..Shame on you...and you seem to be people who were in Beta.. anyone that knows me, I am often more then generous with helping people and giving out items that I have created, but if I gave you an item and you are taking credit blatently in notes that this may cause you to be suspended or even worse.

So again, please, Stop.

Soren - I have two of your horses that I got from the Free Bazzar in Stillman. I love them and would very much like to keep them but in light of what you have posted, please tell me what they are worth and I will pay you for them - you can IM me and when I am in world I will pay you.

I am sorry for your loss Soren, and it is a shame that someone is taking credit for your work. I wish you well sir anhd hope this matter is resolved soon cause no one needs this kind of out right dis-respect let alone stealing. If I find any of them I will immediatly give them to you (perhaps the free-display can be taken down too).........

Ok. Since you have spoken here without first reading my response to your offline IM I received in my email, I feel like I should clarify. I made the genie bottle and that is where my involvement ended. I did not place items inside of it nor was I aware the person handing them out was doing so without permission. I did not "blatantly" take credit for or hack your horse. If the notecard within gives credit to me for the horse let me be the first to say that is completely erroneous. I had nothing to do with the horse and the extent of my involvement was making the genie bottle for a friend who was throwing an Arabian themed birthday.

All I can say is: See what happens when you get an infidel to make a genie bottle?

It's all a lot of fun till someone loses a horse.

Hehehe. I lost a horse once. Well, I mean I divorced her after she contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Now she's dog food, glue and Jell-O.

Back on February 23, 2004, I had my Midnight at the Oasis Birthday Party celebrating my RL Birthday.

My very dear friend gave me two horses, full mod and permission to copy as well as a camel she made me to place in genie bottles that another friend made me and I textured.

I still have the exact gifts given at my party and its where your "beta" person got them. NOT thru theivery or deception.

I adhere to the rights of others property in sl and when I see something belonging to someone else I contact the creator.

If, in fact, these are your works then whomever u gave full perms to decided to share them.

I think before falsely accusing someone you should seek the source. In this case, that source would have been me.

Seriously though, it is a shame to see items being stolen. I myself am 1-2 months new to Second Life and loving it, and have just recently gotten into creating objects and such, and can say first hand alot of effort and creativity are put into them, almost like a piece of art... it's a real shame to see that art vandilized.

I never and I mean NEVER gave full perms and Mod for a Horse..It was Hacked and whoever you got it from got a Hacked Version. I was never contacted and I would have told you so, Misty. But we all know especially those of us who have been here since Beta that items can be hacked..It was posted SEVERAL times in the Forums in the Past. Is it Thievery to take someones work, that they are proud of and still to this day sell and find that it has since April, been given freely? What about those who have paid the Price for the Horse in Question? But in the Note the said person is given Full and Blantent Thanks for THEIR creation. They didn't create it, I DID. I simply asked that whoever has been giving them out to stop. But it is still Thievery. If I make something and I sell it for a price and someone gives it out to the community without compensation or rights, is down right stealing from the creators pocket. I contacted the Lindens and Live help and they both told me to post in the forums for a request for the Horse to stop being given out freely. So I will say this:

I knew posting anything in this feeding frenzie of a forum is a mistake because there are nothing but individuals who like to think they are mightier than thou or joking about others, in many ways loss. I currently sell the horse for 250. If roughly say 200 of them are given out freely with out compensation to me, I have lost in Revenue 50,000 in Lindens, at say a fluctation of the rate of lindens on GOM at $3.00 per 1000 lindens, I have lost $150 dollars in real money.. Funny..sounds like theft to me no matter how you look at it..

Oh and to Nolan, Sorry that you felt I was attacking you for creating a Bottle that was used to house a Horse that shouldn't be there in the first place. But..I had to act on this as I was told that Today alone, Several of those horses were given out.

So, just remember, I asked it to stop and yes I called the Post Horse Thieves, but step into my shoes and tell my how you might feel and tell me I was wrong. If you make a good point, I will retract my post, but until then, the responses speak for themselves.

I think I am the *beta member* you are referring to and I have already stated I had zero knowledge of where the horses and camels were coming from or the the nature of their respective permissions, and frankly, I shouldn't have to. I was asked to make an item. I did so and gave it freely as a favor. What transpired with it after that was and is beyond my control. My only wish is that you would've let me get home, reply to your offline IM, have you read and consider that response, and then go from there before posting this in the forums. Instead I was responded to with some vague, emailed IM response about a *leave of absence*. Retracting anything now is pointless as there were over 550 people in the forums to read this thread due to the grid outage earlier.

Also, I am and have been in your shoes. There are several items I created circulating out there now that were not intended for general consumption. It sucks and I hope the perms are fixed SOON.

I am sorry you are having this problem, but be aware that this horse has been in freebie boxes and the bottles, all free to copy, for months and months. I have seen it in many many freebie boxes and freebie locations. I doubt that you will be able to stop the distribution at this point.

all this about something you created how long ago? maybe there should be an expiration date on permissions to encourage recycling of ideas. I'd be flattered that someone had chosen to breathe new life into my old projects. horse and genie bottle both.

You know, this makes me a little worried that a lot of the stuff I picked up as a newbie was not really intended to be free or were abused in some manner.

I saw so many awesome creations that people allegedly offered for free that I was surprised, now, maybe the case is that they were not really intended to be free afterall.

I have a lot of free things on my land, (items such as free food and things on my camp ground that I allow people to use and copy). If someone flies by my property and sees one of their items that was not intended to be given away please IM me and I will remove the item.

Soren, I feel your pain and with all due respect considering the system we are currently working with you cannot fault someone if they recieved the item with full mods because unless for the last year you have been locked in a closet being beaten by a mistress you know the permissions systems are screwed beyond repair. There are many creators that have multiple Items out there that have full permissions on them. Why because through a series of bugs mishaps and fowl ups permissions on a multitude of Items have been scattered to the wind.

I have been in your shoes and I still am just remember "The Foreplay" a Yacht design I made back in beta that if you fly around SL you will find literally hundreds of them because the permissions were fowled and it was given away for free.

So as a piece of advice dont berate the people for something that a bugged system created. You should seek your pittance with the source of the problem and that would be the broken permissions sytems of the past.

Im not saying that you shouldnt be angry Soren, What I am saying is help focus on age old problem that needs a permanent solution to help revive the trust that some of the creators have lost in the system.

Nolan: you have been a long time friend of mine and I understand your angst for the implied attack even though your name was not brought up in the initial post. Had you not replied I would have never know he was refering to you. Chin up old friend and chalk this up to if you don't make it dont trust it as it will bite you in the arse even with good intentions. Believe me I learned that lesson well.

Misty: Hun, I know your intentions were well in the theory and design of what you were doing. But, like I said to Nolan if its not made by you don't trust it to be giving away publicly or for sale as something like this will always come back to haunt you no matter how good your intentions are. As long as I have known you, your intentions have always been good so please understand my statements to both you and Nolan are not chastising either of you but offering advice for future endeavors because I do treasure both of you as my friends.
