well what if you only had a map of NYC and you thought ity was the whole world then youd think its flat i think its the same this in SL it really is round just we cant see enough on the map to prove it.

i think its the same this in SL it really is round just we cant see enough on the map to prove it. If you are in NYC and you walk (fly, drive, whatever) long enough in any direction you will eventually return to the same spot. If you do the same in World, you will hit an edge (and yes, sometimes fall off into a black hole). SL is NOT round. Sorry. _____________________

The # of sims is variable based on the # the Lindens decide to add. That # will based on the sucess of the game. They aren't there hidden from your view (well some may be for testing but thats a whole other thing). Whatever though, believe what you will. _____________________

It would be cool if there was a max number of Sims to for a 'World' and then you would have teleporters to seperate worlds.
Addings sims on would fill up spaces in the 'world'. For example, lets say a world is 225 sims, or a 15*15 grid. sims are added til this area is filled, and the ones on the edges 'wrap around'. When it is time to add the 226th sim a new 'world' is created, with some teleport locations on the current world to it. The worlds would be significantly large (3840m circumference or a diameter of 1,222. If my math is right.) int this example. I chose 15 because I'm pretty sure it is already past 10 wide. Anyways, more random thoughts. ![]() |

Into Space!

Yes Ama,
When a new world is "discovered" we are given the option to build a interplanetary space craft that can hold 13 people. To get to travel and settle on the new planet you must be willing to team up with 12 other people and build the spacecraft... Then, here is the fun (or weird) part ![]() Once the 13 of you get into the craft and blast off, every time you log on to SL for 13 days, you are in the craft with your co-travelers. You cannot go back home (Voodooland) until you have reached the new planet. Then you can teleport back and forth between the two worlds at will, having earned the right by completing the journey with your fellow space guys and gals. This living in close quarters for 13 days could quite possibly create some very strong bonds for some and enemies for others. We might even send along a "TV" crew to film the journey. Reporting back to the rest of SL "reality TV" style. I volunteer to be on one of the the first ships, any others? Astronaut Sinatra Cartier _____________________

But before we get to that, I would like to say that I'm very surprised! I can't believe nobody mentioned that most of us call it "The Grid". It's what I call it whenever I try to refer to the world. Now for my obvious response... I hear a lot of newbies say it when they first come in, and hell, if the movie didn't make it sound so damn depressing, we might as well just call it... The Matrix! ![]() As for the "tensor" comment, hey, you got me, never heard of it! LoL. ![]() _____________________

Let there be Light! Voodoo Roark! It is your decision. You got there first. Now, some of you may get upset with this, but as far as I know, the first time I ever heard the concept of naming SL's planet was from Voodoo Roark. If someone else has mentioned it, please show me the post. Cult Leader - Third Life, Sinatra Cartier Pssh it may be the first time YOU'VE heard of this, but that doesn't mean you're omniscient. I was talking bout this very thing to Bel and BBC TWO days ago. That makes that the 8th. BEFORE the 9th, when this was posted. So THERE. So I vote we call it uh... Linda. No wait, that's horrible. How bout uh... Gridia. Or The Sim Cluster. Or Simbonia. Or Lindonia. Or Gridenton. Or Lindainnia. Or Blisstonia(Known for its high levels of bliss). Or Creativia. Or LifeStealer. Or Orr. Any of those sound good? ![]() |

Are their alternate SL dimensions that we don't know about? Somewhere there could be a Susnoid Rekeesrats that always makes sense and a Evad Nameez who is "The Infinity" and a Oodoov Kraor who doesn't dream.
And maybe they are leaving their second life to find happiness in their first. Sounds viable to me! _____________________

Higher dimensions
04-11-2003 10:36
In response to Wednesday's question about wrapping the world around a cylinder...
It is possble, however Misnomer's point would have to be considered... or would it? Just think... if we didn't fill in every square of the grid and allowed holes of void to exist between the servers... then it would be _possible_ to wrap a small number of servers (that number would be determined by the scale of the voids) to another set of servers somewhere far away in world to produce an effective wormhole. Kinda like a "branch cut" in a mapping of the complex plane. This would produce a world whose layout dimension was something more than 2, but less than 3. Not that this is our plan for SL, but it is interesting to think about, and is something we discussed years ago when we started on this project. |

Perhaps YOU should read MY entire post. It was meant to be semi-funny. I knew that your original post was meant in fun, and thus, I replied with my own attempt at humor. I realize that with text only it's hard to tell sarcasm from seriousness, but in the thread's context, I think it was pretty obvious. Can you tell if THIS post is sarcastic or serious? Also: Have you ever met an omniscient being? Do you know if they would or would not say "As far as I know"? Do you even know if they would prefer to speak English, Italian, French, Japanese, or any other earthly language? Also: While we're on the subject of nitpicking every little detail, you incorrectly spelled "capisce" as "capish". Capisce? Now, let's all get back to our happy SL existences, think up of a name for the giant mass of sims, and try to figure out exactly what Andrew is saying. |

Originally posted by Tracey Kato huh ??? Take a piece of paper. This is the SL grid as it is now. Connect two opposite edges to form a cylinder, this is a simple example of what we're talking about. While keeping is a cylinder, connect the other two edges, now the world is a torus. Keep in mind that these are "server edge" connections, and we are 2-dish creatures living on the surface of the grid. So you couldn't look up and see the other side of the torus, but you can keep traveling forever in any direction. Now unroll the paper so we're back to the original grid. Say it looks like this, where each sim is a letter: CODE
Make a cut in the paper, between E and J and B and G. Then make a cut in the paper betwee O and J and L and G. You've cut a strip out of the middle of the paper almost all the way through. Now, make a loop by joining J to F, then "heal" the join, so that E is connected to J, D is connected to I, C is connected to M and B is connected to L. Now, imagine you're a person walking in the surface of the world. It's really interesting because it's not the kind of space our brains are used to dealing with. For instance, on this shape, you might be able start at point X and go 10m "west" then 10m "north and be at point Y, and also, start at point X, go 10m "north" and 10m "west" and end up at point Z! And the distance from point Y to point Z will not necessarily have any useful relationship to XY and XZ. Erm, I need to go lie down for a while. |

Very cool. Frighteningly enough, I follow.
If the world remained a fixed size this'd be awesome. To keep the size in flux would mean constant disruption. If people built on edges and/or had neighbors they liked and you split the world to plunk in a new sim I think it would cause a lot of displeasure to residents. The other route, as already suggested, adding new areas as new "planets" to visit. Teleporting fees would also be different. Shipley to Dore is 36(?) now but being next door it'd be the same then as going to say, Hawthorne. The most expensive teleport would then be from whatever your point of origin to half way across the world. Very interesting concept _____________________

This would be logically equivalent to saying "it is true that..." for such a being. So there is no reason such a being could not or would not say that. Wednesday? Are you a logic fan? (edited) Doh, nevermind. I obviously should stop posting til I get some caffine in me. _____________________

periodic boundary conditions
04-11-2003 12:10
Wednesday,
The answer to your follow-up question is that it is not currently possible, but certainly possible with a bit of coding. The wormhole configuration would require less coding -- not very much to get it working so that you could walk through the loop. However, getting landmarks to properly show up on the 2D map available in the client would be... uh... challenging. And yes, wormholes would make a space that most of us would find very difficult to visualize. |
