From: Maxx Monde Anything by Juro Kothari, Jai Nomad, Aimee Weber and Lordfly Digeridoo deserve more scrutiny and praise, for sure. Also, Barnesworth Anubis has been impressing me as of late, in addition to Ingrid Ingersol's work. Thanks Maxx! Of course, you did forget one person: yourself. Maxx's work is always full of great detail, excellent design and, of course, shiny! One other builder that I'd like to add to the list is Jimmy Thompson (or is it Thomson?).

Unhygienix - I hope this doesn't count as much of a thread detour, but your idea reminds me of something I've been working on. It's an offline grid map, along the lines of the one in the SL client. It includes the ability to exhange lists of landmarks, and to subscribe to lists of landmarks on the web. Part of the idea is for people to be able to publish lists of cool things as an alternative to the Linden top picks and events. Here's a couple of alpha screen shots, just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about: http://www.geocities.com/goreldin/2life/GridChartScreen1A.jpghttp://www.geocities.com/goreldin/2life/GridChartTable1A.jpgIt has some other simple features like drag-selecting a rectangle to zoom on, sims color coded by type, and a spreadsheet view of the sims that can be sorted on any column. Anwyay, I don't know when I'll get it to beta (I'm an easily distracted nerd), but I'll give you a holler when I do if you want. It only runs on .NET, though.

From: katykiwi Moonflower We all know that there are great builds in Sl that are totally overlooked for a variety of reasons. No club, no sex, no bingo...could be anything. For example, I have been working so hard on my build on Gypsy Moon for months now. The idea was that it is a priates treasure hunt adventure where the pirates crashed on the rocks on Gypsy Moon and were shipwrecked, stranded with a ship full of treasures they looted from around the world. They hid the treasures on the island and to protect the loot they put booby traps everywhere. Over time the pirates died off leaving the treasure behind along with the booby traps.
The sim was unsafe, no fly and no outside scripts. The iidea was for visitors to the sim to find the treasure without dying because once you died you lost it all. A pirate's treasure hunt adventure game.
I have put my heart into Gypsy Moon and it is totally ignored. People visit randomly, or came to see the sex balls after that post was made (where are the sex balls dude?) and would tell me how they loved the build and then not rate it. It's not that I wanted a rating for ratings sake. its the point that it seems there no interest in builds that are not a club or a mall really. I am totally discouraged and have just about abandoned my project.
There are some builds that get a lot of attention because of the popularity of the creator. There are other builds that get the attention because of the commercial aspect such as a great shopping area, or fun club. So lets give some attention to the builds that are great but ignored and overlooked!
Here is a shameful self serving plug for Gypsy Moon! Come take a look at the underground maze, the caves, the waterfalls and ride pegasus down snow mountain! Be sure to walk across the bridges and explore the hull of the shipwreck!
Now, tell us about your overlooked build or one built by another that you love! Let us create the picks list here. Gypsy Moon is one of my favorite places to go - I found it accidentally when I was trying to visit all of the parks in SL. Very Awesome build.

I enjoy many of the above, and hope there will be many more to come. One of my favorites is what I call the Frananthema Macrobuild, which can be found in the Meins sim -- aka Kexland. Just go there . . . you can't miss it, and you'll know why. I haven't seen a new Maxx build in awhile, those are exciting to me (shiny and all)... Mr. Monde, what have ya been up to?

I went to Gypsy Moon awhile back but was clueless that it was a game/treasure hunt. I'll have to return. As someone earlier mentioned, some places are overlooked before everything has rezzed. Maybe you could add something to keep visitors occupied for a few minutes while stuff appears- a notecard with hints, info, a puzzle or something tied in with your theme. Just a suggestion. Also, (although you probably already know this), make sure your layout makes everything easily accessible. I have two "main attractions" on my land, but until recently, object counters reveiled that people who visited one of them usually did not visit the other. The problem was a klunky layout (due in part to jagged property lines). A visitor to my Aquarium (plug, plug) couldn't see the Incompetant Oricle and vice versa. A pair of teleporters solved this. Nothing like throwing somebody headlong at your build p.s. As biased as I am about my builds (see map), I have to admit that Gypsy Moon is way better.

I'd also like to recommend the profound minimalism of "GIANT CUBE' in Mocha.
Its not just a cube, its 'GIANT CUBE'.
You haven't lived until you've seen 'GIANT CUBE' for yourself!!

Ya know Olympia... that's not a bad idea AT ALL for the SL map. Perhaps a click on the map does two things... (1) sets desired destination but also, (2) bring up the BIG VIEW of the map, as appears in your map shot. I'd love to see this feature. -Flip

You haven't lived until you've seen 'GIANT CUBE' for yourself!! It may be minimalism, but... but . . . is it cubist? I like the option of map-within-a-map too. Using the scroll wheel with the map seems so rough and jerky.

Anyone been to Telador recently? Its changed dramatically in the last 3-4 months. Please be patient on the rezzing though, its a detailed build. I believe its part of the SL Parks listings. The Hood fountain makes a great seating arrangement. kary, if I get the chance I'll stop by the build. I've been busy preparing for a discussion series and have not been traveling much.

From: David Valentino Gypsy Moon is wonderful! A great place to explore and relax and die! (watch out for that lava hottub!)
Also, a much older build, The Olive Pit, in Olive (of course) is a very overlooked build that is wonderful and fun to explore. It's one of the sites on my newbie sightseeing tours.
Unfortunately...the Olive Pit is no more. I have built apts for newbies.

I visited Gypsie Moon last month, it was beautiful but not done. I read your demand for scripters too to help put the traps, if I had time this is a project I'd like to work on a bit ; but I don't have time...
I was planning to come back once I have a personfriend. It's very nice to visit.

I've been to Gypsy Moon way, way back and allready rated you for it. Its a beautiful place.
But I am avoiding it now -because- its damage enabled, no-fly and no-script. I know that the purpose is to make it a game, but i'm extremly paranoid around damage zones, I almost never walk (hate it), and no-scripts makes me feel as if my arms are missing.

Heaven
01-20-2005 12:54
Hands down the most beautiful place in SL is Heaven in Krittannia. When I bring new people SL that is the first place I take them to give them an idea of what is possible. Heaven never ceases to inspire draw dropping awe no matter how many times I go there. It drives me insane that no one has taken residence. Where are all the Angels? We have people RPing all sorts of different creatures-why not a group of Angels so that Heaven isn't empty everytime I go?
Which brings me to my next fav place-Rivendell. The Rivendell Project is another stunning example of what is possible in SL, but it suffers from the same issues as Heaven-where are all the damn Elves!?
I mean when I go to Transylvania (another great place) it is always positively SWARMING with Vampires.
Honorable mentions go to Belle Feu, Camelot, and Black Tarn.
Recently I've gone back to exploring the wilds of SL looking for more of these great builds.

First I heard of this little gold mine !

Well now Guess whos in the market for a great challage event, we have 2 scavenger type hunts in Survivor SL , one is trully a great Hunt , but the other is made up from Tangs Mind after finding a very neat place. It sounds like we will be contacting you ingame for an interview and the nickle tour to see if we can bring Survivor SL to your Dream Build. Also your writeup seemed lonly do you have someone/ group you play and share with ? buds/pals/partners are what make it worth it for Tang and I, We can entertain ourselfs with a rubber ball as long as we bounce it together. Waves,

-Life is playing a poor hand well.

I love Gypsy Moon, and have been back to visit on a number of occasions. I also rated it positively, and have it in my favorite places. In fact, a friend saw it there in my profile and went to visit it herself (and was just as impressed as I was).
Please don't give up on your project... it's a wonderful vision, and the build is one of the real "jewels" in Second Life.

You know, I'm always interested in checking out cool/interesting/provocative builds and projects, almost always visit or at least look into those that are suggested to me by residents, and quite often, write about them in New World Notes. So if you have suggestions, IM them to me, or e-mail me at hamlet@secondlife.com. It also helps if you include a punchy little description or even a snapshot, as opposed to just say "Yo this is cool checkit out."

<self-promotion>My two favorite places are both pretty much as the Lindens set them up, with just a few enhancements:
1) Cottonwood Canyon. Down the slope from my apartments, I have built a walkway down to a viewing area for the Falls. There's chairs to sit on part way down if you get tired. All Linden pines have been replaced with identical trees to preserve the original look. I could sit/stand there for hours admiring the rush of water down to the river 20m below.
2) Derwent RV park. My most recent project, dedicated to providing an area for the campers of Second Life. Again, very little added to the natural Linden-created beauty. I cleared some trees to make room for a few RV parking pads (complete with utility hookups and sewage). Up on the hill, I have placed my original honeymoon cabin with Cricket Sunchaser's wonderful furnishings. Over the border into Windermere, I am developing a scuba diving area with some friends. Again, a great place to just sit and unwind. </self-promotion>
I'd like to second the nomination for Aces' house. (Afton?)
Gravity Space Station is amazing.
One I haven't seen mentioned is whatever Cutter and Zara are doing on Asim Zara. I haven't visited recently, but each time I have, it's been new and fantastic.

Sadly, I have no scroll wheel (Mac trackpad, single button). So I have to use the little slidey thingie. Weeks go by without me changing the scale on the map, I usually have it about 1/3rd of the way from the left (the smallest scale where Sim name are shown)
