Yeah, it's an RPG. All you can do there is kill crap to raise your pretty XP numbers.

I played for maybe, a week then got bored and returned to SL. I don't really play these kinds of games so take this review with a grain of salt, but I thought advancement in the game was really artificial. You can make clothes, but it's not really making clothes like in SL. You just pretend to make clothes. I also suck at fighting
All in all it's not my kind of game. Your results may vary._____________________

WoW subscribes to the classic, "kill, experience, level" rinse wash repeat design of most MMORPG's... it just happens to be the best of it's class. For the most part it's super repetitive, but if that's your thing, or you have a really great riddilin prescription it's worth checking out.

I would argue against being "best in its class" as that is all subjective. I personaly like EQ2 over WoW but WoW was fun also. |

I played and quit already. The graphics are good, the professions and skills are a step up from some other MMORPGs, but it's basically the same old cookie cutter, level grinding stuff.

I played WoW for several months after its release. I ended up quitting because of SL. I needed something different to do.
As others have said, SL and WoW are not the same genre of game. WoW is an MMOG where you kill monsters (or players) and level up. It's well done in that context -- Blizzard made a good game overall. Like any game, though, it's got problems too, including login problems. If you're thinking of switching games to avoid the screwups, forget it. Bliz has their share, just like LL. In short - if you're not into the monster-bashing stuff, you probably won't be interested. _____________________

I found WoW to be incredibly boring, a disappointment of megalithic proportion. I've been a tremendous fan of Blizzard for many, many years now, and I had been eagerly awaiting WoW since the day it was anounced as a project. When it finally came out, I bought it immediately, played the hell out of it for a few weeks, and then got bored out of my skull with it.
I'm not sure if the fact that most of the Blizzard top execs have left to start or join other companies had anything to do with WoW's failure to measure up to expectations or not. I just hope it's not a sign of things to come. I'd like to believe Blizzard's best creations are not behind them. On the bright side, the opening cinematic is phenominal, some of the best CGI I've ever seen. Also, much of the world is quite beautiful (although some of it does show signs of rushing to finish). If such things have appeal for you and you have $50 burning a hole in your pocket, it might be wiorthwhile to buy the game just for a nice visual experience. If you're anything like me though, you'll find that after you've explored all the cool looking areas and developed a character or two to the point that you can get to do all the cool spells and abilities, the constant repetition quickly loses appeal. Couple that with the fact that 60-90% of your ingame time will ALWAYS be spent simply traveling between important locations, and it all starts to feel pretty pointless pretty fast. _____________________

You might want to try Guild Wars, which has been recently released to rave reviews. Unlike most tradtional MMORPGs, GW has no online montly fee. $50 for the game and thats it. The game is also structured differently. The focus has been taken away from leveling and more into earning skills. Comeplete various quest and receive a skill. You manage your skills before you do a quest. They do various things so you have to plan ahead.
Tatics play a big part in Guild Wars as you must really plan out what you want to do rather then simple attacks. Guilds in GW is also a large part. You make a "group" called a guild and comepte with others. Large epic battles. The graphics are the best so far I beleive for an MMORPG. Very lush and beautiful. Character avies are also very nice looking. There is some customization but not as depth as SL. You can gain armor and dye to customize your avie. Might be a perfect game for the SL player because of the lack of a fee. So you can always play it and not have to worry if your getting your $15 bucks a month of gameplay. Form large guilds with fellow SL players and battle one another too. You can give your characters a first and last name, so you can just transfer your avie to the game almost. |

I love WoW.
It's so different from SL or anything that I've ever played before. The graphics are outstanding, except for some of the clothing. For awhile, I was wearing some black mail items that looked like fishnet. I thought to myself, "Damn, alllllright -- they have Mistress on the design team!" Some of the areas are just beautiful and breathtaking, like StrangleThorn Vale. There are areas there where there are no mobs to kill, but where you can sit, talk, and fish ( ) without worrying about being killed or stalked. If you're thinking of trying it out, here's a word of advice: "Fer Teh Horde!" Alliance sucks. Best thing to do if you do want to try out the game is stay away, stay faarrrrr away from the "l33t-speek" kiddies. Oh dear, where is... where is... Darwin! _____________________

The trick, like so many other things, is not to get consumed by WoW, or any other online experience. I play WoW and I enjoy it. My style is that I play one character, and one character only, and I play for a few hours a week. And that's it. I do lots of other things, and when WoW sounds good and I have some time, I sit down and eviscerate a few dragons or human paladins. Must be working good for me, because I play a level 60 Tauran hunter. With a psychotic, ferocious killer-owl from Felwood as a pet. What could be better?
But only for a few hours a week, and only knowing that it's just a little recreation, it ain't no big thing. |

I enjoy WoW quite a bit. Yeah, it is based on the tried and true MMORPG formulas of past games (quest, kill monsters, level up your character, get cool gear and loot), but its done very well - and is much more casual-player friendly than stuff like Everquest or EQ2. Also the world / story / content is very rich, and the art direction / look and feel is some of the most solid I've seen. Not necessarily saying the graphics are the latest technology (look to EQ2 for that) but the actual design of the world and characters is incredibly well done in my opinion. It feels like a living, breathing world with a history. That's really what I enjoy most about it - exploring the content and seeing what kind of cool stuff and areas can be found as the game progresses.
I hear that EQ2 has more depth in the gameplay than WoW. I think these games appeal to different kinds of players - WoW for the more casual (and PVP oriented), EQ2 for those who want more complexity and options (and probably better for real role-playing too). I'm interested in both, but haven't had a chance to try EQ2 much yet. I play WoW mostly on Gorgonnash (PVP) on the Horde side with Rolg my level 30 orc hunter. I also might be starting some new chars on the recently opened Skywall PVE server. I have a couple of elves on Kel Thuzad but haven't played them in ages. My only complaint about WoW is that it's too damn addictive... _____________________
