Unfortunately, in the current version of SL, dragging individual objects into a folder seems to always expand the target folder.

I notice this happening if I'm not quick enough. If I drop the object onto the folder right away, the folder doesn't open. You have to be quick, though.

How quick do you have to be, Jake? :) Like half a second? I noticed that in *previous* versions of Second Life, it worked fine for me if I dragged and dropped really quickly, but in 1.5.7 (and I don't know what other versions), it seems instantaneous and I am unable to counter it. :(

multiple item drag?
11-13-2004 13:55
Thanks for the tip, Haley. You just saved me some serious tedium and frustration.

Now, when will SL support dragging multiple items? People have been dragging multiple icons for over 30 years. Really, it's not that hard. I just had to drag 20 items from my inventory into an object's contents... ONE BY ONE! Grrr!

You're right, I just tried it in the latest version. Now it seems that dropping an object automatically causes the target folder to open. I wonder if this was a deliberate change, or a side effect?

Not to hijack, but I have a question regarding inventory that I didn't want to start a new thread on.

Does a large cluttered inventory affect performance? I notice that I now seem to never finish downloading clothing completely before I'm actually in world. I think I remember reading that that is normal. And it keeps going even after actual log in. Anyway... I have a ton of junk in my folders. Would dumping some of it help performance. I remember fairly decent performance with default preference settings upon first joining.

And now, I have to lower all my settings just to function normally when I'm alone in a sim. The only constant change I see has been an ever expanding inventory, and upgrades. And figure that when I first started out, I barely had an inventory so I'm starting to wonder how much it does affect performance.

Anyone know? I don't want to just give it a try to only realize it doesn't help, and then also loose all those items I cleared out.

Owen, maybe try emptying out your cache very often and also shedding any calling cards you don't use at all. My inventory and clothing doesn't always finish loading even after I land in world but it doesn't effect my performance. Empty your trash often as well as duplicate objects you don't need. Combined, all these things can help you perform better....especially the cache part.:)

Had to edit out my redundancy ;)

Thanks for the tips :D Is there a feature in preferences that lets you clear out the cache? I've never noticed anything like that. Or under any other menu? Or do I have to find a folder somewhere under SecondLife and delete the contents manually?

Will definitely dive into the folders tonight when I get on to check for dups. I'm sure I have them, and there's no point in carrying more than one. Thank you!

I've heard tale that if your inventory is OPEN and multiple folders are open and displaying their contents, it will affect your performance. I can't verify it, but i've heard it more than once.

The inventory windows jumping to the new target location when moving items is the bane of existance as a whole. It truly is. I posted about that in the tech forum in 1.5.6 because it is driving me batty. Yes, i realize it's not a very far drive.

Deleting Cache Objects
11-13-2004 21:16
Ok Omen,

It's not a feature in SL so you have to go to

My Computer
C Drive
Documents and Settings
Your Name Folder (name you gave your computer...e.g. "Owen";)
Application Data
Second Life Folder
Cache

****If you don't see the APPLICATION DATA folder after clicking on Your "name" folder,
click on the tool bar in that window and choose TOOLS, then FOLDER OPTIONS then click on the VIEW tab and put a dot in the option that says SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS and then click "OK". After that you should see the APPLICATION DATA folder.

Ok, so once inside the Cache folder, delete allllll of those objects in there. I have no clue what they are, but a linden showed me this process months ago and it works. :) good luck. If you can't figure it out, try IM'ng me in world. ;)

I do this ritual at least every 3 days. So do it as often as you like.

Sahara,

Awesome! Thanks for the very detailed step by step. I'm sure I'll have no problem, but I'll definitely get in touch in world if I do. And thank you for the heads up on your reply via IM! :D

Edit: Got into the folder okay. And Wow is all I can say. 1gb+ full of files in there just sitting around. Hopefully this will help the performace a bit for me :D Thanks again for all your help. Going to clear this folder regularly now!

Isn't there a setting somewhere in the Preferences for limiting cache size? Flip through all the tabs in Preferences, might be something in there, I forget.

The search when you just start typing, only works at your current folder level, it doesn't do whole inventory (as I recall). So a full and nicer inventory search would be great.

There are actualy a great many improvements that could be made to the inventory.

I recall seeing the New Window thingy when it first was implemented. :P Every new version I go through the interface looking for anything new or changed, never know what you'll find. :D

I think this just kinda greater prooves that there needs to be some sort of easy to go through manual that goes over the interface. And other basic features (maybe something for the SL Wiki when LL gets around to putting it up or somewhere else on a redo of the site).

There is, or was... though I have no idea why it's there... it's not as if SL takes any notice of it.

When I used to give SL Basics class, I had an inventory organizing notecard I would hand out to those who wanted it. I haven't given a Basics class in a long while.

I have a Basics class later today Pituca... Any chance you could throw the notecard my way for distributing?

Found it, Edit, Preferences (Ctrl-P), Network, Disk Cache Size.

From Kex's wonderfull Preferences Guide (Sep 2004):
From: someone

Disk Cache Size:
This specifies how much space will be used on your primary drive to store information that SL has downloaded, to help save having to download it again if you pass back through the same area again at a later time.

While usually larger is better, I've noticed a larger cache also degrades my CPU performance because it takes longer to look through a larger cache. I keep this set to 200MB as a compromise between lookup speed and download speed. If you have a slower connection or a faster computer, you may want to set this higher.

Note that every time you install an update to Second Life, your cache files are cleared out and reset.

Edit to add: And yes I find that when you have two inventory windows open, drag an item from one to the other, and the other item pops back up to the folder you just dragged the file too, to be highly annoying as well. Definitly new behavior. Also the folder timer for how long to have an item hover over a folder before expanding it, seems wonky.

Hey Oz,

Is there any chance you have and can post a link to that Preferences Guide? I'd love to read though that. My searches for a good explanation of all the settings has been kind of useless. Bits and pieces of info scattered here and there, but I haven't found any one thing that sums all the options up.

Thanks.

To my knowledge, there's no website for Kex's wonderful Preferences Guide.

If you want it, IM Kex Godel inworld and ask -- she'll be more than happy to help you out with the appropriate notecards. Cheerio. :D

Also (don't know if it is true, I need to test again). You know how when you have both inventory windows open and are transferring objects? Both windows bouce to the folder you are transferring to, and if you are transferring multiple you have to scroll again to find the object you want to drag over. WELL last night just before logging I found that if you transfer from the newly opened window (to the left) to the older window (to the right) it doesn't do that.

I hope this is true, and it wasn't that I was just too darn tired and maybe was hallucinating?

Still jumping for me - which is absolutely a pain in the neck.

LL, how are we supposed to keep our inventory sorted when we have to scroll forever to get back to the things we are moving?

Olmy, Did you know you can Drag a whole folder to an object and it will "dump" all the items into the object individually?
This is really helpfull when filling vendors, as I prepare to build a vendor or fill an object with items I put them in a folder, makes it alot easier to transfer. Also helps keeping your vendor inventory straight when you get into 15+ vendors with 8 - 30 items in a vendor, I just keep a vendor file with a folder for each vendor in it.

Also, can anyone help with clearing your cache when you have XP the path is different and I've never been able to find the cache. When I get to application data following Sahara's instructions there is no second life folder. Following the route of program files I dont find a cache anywhere in the second life file.

Thanks
P

I'm on XP myself, and I found this thanks to some great tips. Depending on how you set up your machine (naming it), you may have several folders under Document & Settings that all can lead to Applications folders. However, only one of them should actually contain the SecondLife/Cache folder.

For example, under Documents&Settings I had the following folders:
All Users
Default Users
Owner
MyGirlfriend'sName.D65 (several of these with variations)
NetworkService

I had to explore them all until I found the right one. More than one of them may have an Application Data folders, so you have to look through them all until going into application data finally shows a second life folder, and then the /cache.

OR

Simply do a search for SecondLife under the start menu and see which one spawns from Documents & Setting in the first place, rather than the actual game location.

Hope this helps.

I would love a copy of that preferance guide. If someone would be so kind to send the notecard to me inworld I would appreciate it.

I am on XP Pro and found the cache file exactly where it was supposed to be. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks for the tip. I would have never known to delete those files.

:D You're welcome! Glad you found it Pahoa :D

And Billy, I'd be happy to pass on the notecard to you. I'll be in world in a few hours, and I'll send one as soon as I get in. Until then, if someone else happens to hook you up with one, let me know via IM so I don't spam a notecard your way unnecessarily.
