I used my alt for a vacation. I picked a name frivolously, bought a little bit of land on an impractical whim, built on it without planning, hung out with my new (mostly newbie) neighbors, built some new stuff for myself and didn't rent shops to peddle copies, dressed in a different style, and sought out new places to shop and play. It was a lot of fun, creating a new look, back down to no land and then up to just 512, with no reputation (which has pros and cons). Really got me out of a dull rut. When I was alting around, I posted with my alt instead of my primary, although I didn't say anything I wouldn't have posted anyway. Next time I feel kinda burned out, I'll let this account rest and go back to my alt for a couple of weeks. I covet some of her clothes.

Hi, Juro, what prompted this topic?
Outing alts on SL forums is against the TOS. I thought that was interesting. Pathfinder gave that read-out very clearly a few weeks ago. As for the outing of alts by third-party sites -- well, that's off-topic and not a subject for discussion, eh? So if someone is using a secondary account because their main account is suspended, and their behavior is inappropriate then the moderators will deal with it. But if the secondary account is working within the guidelines, then we will continue to allow it to participate. Sounds like a good policy. ![]() _____________________

I posted with my alt. But it was a mistake on my part. I had previously logged in to tier down my alt account and went to the forums not thinking I'd be posting as my alt. Didn't bother to correct it.
The other one time I posted with my alt was in the Hotline to Linden forum, I was a bit self-conscious in posting as my real account. And it felt awkward to complain or report whatever I had to say. I sometimes make bug reports with my alt, cuz I get embarassed when I'm not certain if what I'm encountering is a bug or not. But Kona still replies to me addressed to Lash. I can't hide. I'm self-conscious when communicating with the Lindens. |

Geez, that's like a secret? You're coming VERY late to the party. I just like to keep the property groups separate between residential and commercial, and everyone knows this, so what? You don't have to be a brain scientist to look at my groups and see my alts. Like you are discovering some big fucking deal here pandastrong? ![]() _____________________

I don't have an alt currently, so I guess that leads to my next statment which is.. No, I've never posted with an alt account.
I see both sides to the story though. There really are legitimate reasons to have/use alts. Either by one person, a family, or a group. There are also some really shady reasons to have alts. On the one hand I agree that if a person has been banned, they should have to *really* suffer the consequences and not be able to engage the community either in world and/or on the forums (depending on where they were banned of course). But I can also see the Linden's having their hands tied when it could be a case of the alt is a spouse and the family only has one computer, etc. Just where do you draw the line? I honestly have no answer for that right now. I've often thought of creating an alt just to see how long it took people to figure out it was me. But with all my smiling and blushing, I doubt it would take more than a single post! haha ![]() _____________________

Hi, Juro, what prompted this topic? Hi Random! What prompted it was a LOT of talk about alts over the last few days. I've never had an alt, as I saw no purpose for it - but I know a lot of people do, so I wondered what purposes one would have an alt for. We know about the obvious, negative reasons like griefing, etc. but I think most people have them for 'legit' reasons - so I wanted to hear what those might be. Outing alts on SL forums is against the TOS. Yep. Trust me, I'm VERY familiar with the TOS and am not about to sacrifice my abilities to post/play inworld over someone's alt. If they want it known, they can tell. As for the outing of alts by third-party sites -- well, that's off-topic and not a subject for discussion, eh? _____________________

Juro, there are lots of reasons people have multiple accounts assigned to one credit card, the technical definition of an alt. There are many people who share a computer with a spouse or partner, friends who buy accounts for birthday gifts, and so on. Having an alt is not de facto a bad thing. So it's not very useful to speculate about whether or not an account is an alt, or if it is being used to circumvent the community standards. Every account is subject to the same guidelines and standards. If an account is violating the guidelines it will be subject to the same discipline. So if someone is using a secondary account because their main account is suspended, and their behavior is inappropriate then the moderators will deal with it. But if the secondary account is working within the guidelines, then we will continue to allow it to participate. when you know that alt is used by the same person... that's pretty stupid. _____________________
