you fellow core owners may or may not want this. the lindens can build beautiful ground textures. look at the newer sims. so i want them to redesign the set of original terrain textures and apply them to the core sims.

Jes.
I'd love to have grass in Boardman. It's suburbia! It should have the greenest most perfectly manicured grass. _____________________

What I'd really like is the ability to use my own or to change what default texture is assigned to what elevation. I'd much rather have grass at the edge of my water than dirt.

Heh, I remember everyone going crazy about the new terrain textures in v1.1 ![]() Now, all of a sudden, they're ugly. Go figure. We've been spoiled by the private sims, where the owners can upload their own ground textures. And there are good default textures, but as Ingrid pointed out, in places like Brown and Boardman, they don't even have grass available. _____________________

They actually did. If you look inside the library folder, under textures, and ground textures, search around and you will see the old, low res version of grass and the new, high res version (the patterns are EXACTLY the same, but slightly bolder colors).

How do you go about changing the textures, then? In Edit Land?? _____________________

Well you cant apply the texture to the ground, the best you can do is put it on prims and put it on the ground. I did that in Boardman and it looked OK. Since board man is flat I just made the prims about .05 meters above the ground so it looked like a lush layer of grass. Some mean evil woman deleted it though. She didnt like my prim grass, i say it was jealousy. *coughINGRIDINGERSOLLcough*.

And then you'll be sorry. Maybe we can get the feted inner people to pull some strings and help us out here... We're desperate for grass! _____________________

Break up the ground textures! Let us all decide what ground texture is appropriate for our own parcel.

Break up the ground textures! Let us all decide what ground texture is appropriate for our own parcel. But then we'll have to suffer from technicolor ground in addition to poorly terraformed ground. ![]() _____________________

I would add: re-evaluate the old sims linden land "decorations" (trees and the like) and utilities (roads, bridges, telehubs) and do a bit of restoring to bring them up to par with the new sims (that are absolutely wonderful)...
And add a railway! ![]() _____________________

Thats why I terraformed down so much in Olive in the first place. Was looking for greenery and water. Tired of that ol' cold rock.

i shall clarify for eggy's sake. the only ugly ground texture we have now is the sand. but the new textures are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo pretty that i think some refined ones would be nice for the older sims.
it's a small bone. but i think ll is going to reap quite a lot of good will from it. _____________________

I fell in a pothole on my street and couldn't get out. ![]() Me too Ingrid. I even got a picture of the whorible car wreck in Boardman and sent it in as a bug report. No word from LL, but I think I may have to sue, neck injuries and little monkeh will never be the same View the awful evidence below! _____________________

perhaps the lindens should create an alderman account specifically to handle problems in the restricted sims. but that's the topic of another poll. please create one. we don't have enough polls right now.

Ok not sure how this will be taken but what the hell...
I know this couldn't be done overnight but I wouldn't expect it to be done that way...it would be a slow evolving process that would never really end. I'd like to see the ground textures in much of SL animated. By animated I mean that slowly over time they change to reflect the change in seasons. Some examples of what I would like to see... I live in a snow sim and like it but think it would be cool if in the spring little patches of ground began to show in the snow as if the snow where melting. Shortly(a couple of months maybe) after this some green would show up in these patches. How many of these patches would depend on location and elevation. In summer the lower elevations of the snow sims could go all green. Fall would reverse this until we are back to all snow for winter. At first there might only be 3 or 4 seasonal textures but over time we could fill in the gaps with more transitional textures so that there are 3-4 for each season or eventually one for each week of the year. Tropical areas could cycle through changes also. Summer months could bring more brownout and rainy seasons more greenery. Some of these changes could be as subtle as shifting of dirt/green-lands around water areas and beaches. Flowering fields and meadows could appear and change with spring, summer and fall in other areas that are more temperate. All these effects could be done subtly over time with the development of the textures themselves and an automatic control program. It would take awhile to develop the program and slowly put it into effect for existing areas but I would think it would be easy to add to newly created sims as the are developed once the program is working. To start this process would be to go with the OP's idea and start on new textures for old areas but with a plan to automate in the future. This way new textures could alsways be added and the world would always seem fresh and new, even if you live in the same place for a long time. I also think the community could help in thecreation of many of the textures needed taking some of the workload off of the Lindens in the future. Thanks for reading all this. Remember it is just an idea. Allot of details would need to be worked out that I haven't addressed here but I hope you get the basic idea anyway. Feel free to flame away. ![]() |
