These will be fun races to watch :D

! can see it now, land released at X Y in SIM X. Some avs will be running around in circles, bcause they don't know how to use the map very well. Then, there will be those buying at 16m at a time from 4 different corners. That'll make for a few shouting matches, "HEY I WAS HERE FIRST" or "So-and-so bought 32 sq m in the middle of my claim and now he wants 10,000L for it". I can see the "extorionist grieving" threads already. Furthermore some otherwise decent lots chopped up into checkers and diagonals and unhappy neighbors.

But otherwise, Im glad to see LL "level the playfield" giving everyone a better chance at finding some good deals.

Even funnier in slow motion; think lagged out land grabbers bumping into each other. Why do i have an urge to buy lots of bling, hootchie hair, particle emitters and any other lag inducing items to wear as I take a tour of the public lands of sl?

16 m2 plots bother me. What good are they? I think they are blackmailer bait.

Would it make sense if released public land plots smaller than 512m had a right-of-first refusal to owners of adjoining land?

If you are even 1m2 over the limit for your tier, you have to tier up. Better to release if you can't find someone in the same sim who can absorb it for the prims, few as they may be.

Good one -- I think it's about time to bring "landhopping" into the SL vocab! :)

I think it's Somebody Else's Problem.

Truedat. I stay away from that and just focus on building. But all the same, when I was a noob, I did spend some time in the lottery that *was* public land, and was able to support myself a little. AND I always sold at less than 2 dollar/m2 profit, cause I hate barons.

Public land is currently available to purchase in the following regions:
No simulators found with public land available.

Ouch.

Nice, and always glad to have more information available... but ouch.

ahahahah.

This is going straight to hiro's head!

blaze, you're correct! LOL ... took several people pointing it out to me 8 hours later for me to notice, though, heheheh

Really, this is a beautiful thing because it shows that:
(a) Residents can band together behind ideals in a fairly civil matter
(b) Linden Lab can respond to (a) swiftly.
(c) a win-win scenario can be found
(d) Because things were kept fairly civil, (c) leaves everyone feeling good
(e) Technological solutions can supercede beaurocratic.

In hindsight, I'm surprised no one came up with the idea sooner. Oh, wait, I know why... because most players interested in getting that info generally wouldn't want other people to have it? *snickers*

Yeah, I think the dirty little secret though is that it doesn't work.

It took 10 minutes to register land that I set to public was public, so land scanning is still worth it.

FYI - We have removed the caching on the Land page (http://secondlife.com/land/index.php) so that any land which is released to public in world shoulld be immediately available on the page.

I'm glad you posted that Oz. I was so sure it has said "no simulators found" and now it says:

"No regions found with public land available. "

Don't know what the difference is but I notice stuff like that. Maybe it means someone could release a whole sim to public land. Wouldn't that be quite the buy?

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

It's so much more fun finding it in world! I just found a couple the other day, it's like an Easter Egg. Guess the scanners weren't working.

They should eliminate the 16m demarcations. This is some earlier version of the game leftover. They are only used by griefers all over town to extort. Some put huge spinning signs of George Bush on a 32 or a 64. There's no good reason to sell land in this fashion, it's an open invitation to griefing.

Now that they display available land, i cant wait to see random 16m2 plots grabbed out of larger released areas by multiple people watching the (to come) RSS.

I believe Simulators and Regions are the same thing. Regions is used more often by LL on official stuff since its easier for people to distinguish what a region is, than what a simulator is. Simulator short hand would be "sim" or "sims" which people could confuse with "The Sims", and also SL itself could be considered a "simulator", but we the people just usualy use sim to mean, well, a sim. So in short Sim would be the technical (or resident) term and Region is the laymance(sp)(or LL public release) term.

Thats a good catch, I didn't notice that.

Someone could release a whole sim to public land, and yes that would be quite the buy, but it'd still be around... uh... 60k? I think? I forget how many sqm a sim is. I can't imagine anyone doing that on purpose either, lol.
