Charter Members are residents who have received a complimentary account from the Lindens. They are usually "Lifer Accounts," which were given at the end of beta for a one-time fee. Lifer accounts are rarely, if ever, given out today. Lifers receive a permanent stipend comparable to a Premium account holder, as well as a 4096m^2 tier for life.

Another form of Charter Member includes a yearly subscription which is given out for Linden contest winners. An example of this is the Game Dev Competition currently happening.

Charter Members are also commonly called the FIC on these boards. If you don't know what that means... well, I'm sure someone will enlighten you.

A charter member is a resident who has purchased a life time account. They were in beta testing usually. The Life time memberships were NOT simply handed out. Any one that wanted to could buy life time. That had started in SL before Jun 23rd of 2003 could. There was NO select individuals. We recieved the 4096 land to compensate us for buying a membership we spent Well over $100 for and were told we wouldnt have to pay for anything else. Well until LL went to land tier accounts. We DO NOT get a set stipen thats higher becuase of it.

We DO NOT get a et stipen.

A what? And from what I read, the stipend was roughly that of a premium. If this is incorrect, I'll edit my post - not being a Charter Member myself.

Edit - I'm going by information like this:

Um... okay then. I'm still a little confused, but ah well.

The FIC, or "Feted Inner Core," is an in-joke spawned by several locals.

So it goes, they are a group of "favorites" of the Lindens that several residents have used as a group to write thread after thread of tongue-in-cheek attacks about. The existance of a real Feted Inner Core is still a mystery, but try telling that to a few people.

Gosh, to think, if I had been a Charter Member, I would have land I could use. Although I don't currently have any use for it... how different my Second Life may have been!

The lifetime accounts were offered later than beta. I can't remember whether or not there was a period where you couldnt get one, but initially they were like 159$US (or very close to that), then later they went up to 225$. I got mine on the last possible day, which was shortly after Christmas 2003.

We get 500$L a week stipend.

I know this is a touchy subject with some folks, so let me make it very clear that this was by no means an easy decision for me. I had several SL friends who also waited until the very last moment. Truth is, some of us were undecided if we wanted to drop 225$ on a game we had no guarantee would be around for much longer. LL and consequently SL was not on solid finacial ground at that point in time. 1.2 fixed the problems though - like they had hoped, and here we are with SL stronger than ever and growing steadily. The gamble paid it itself off for me just after this past Holiday season, if you factor in my average monthly tier bouncing between 15 and 25 $ a month (for tier above and beyond my 4096) for that period.

Torley Torgeson -You can lend my greenhouse..., I have no time to use it so far...

You are so welcome.. !!!

But its a hard life to own land.,. and a house.. cleaning windows.. wacum cleaning... cut the grass... pay tier (must be some sort of tax).. repaint it every second year... doing dishes.. make the bed.. hide all balls.. puhhhh... myyy.,..

Maybe the FIC people can help for a small sum of Lindens??.. *lol*...

...or is it VIP people?:-)))

My status does not read as "Charter" only as resident.

I bought my lifetime account right before the 1.2 announcement for $225, and then when I found out about 1.2, I initially regretted having done so but it all worked out in the end. They stopped offering them after 1.2 came out, and brought on the 9.95 one time fee accounts. Considering that I pay $290 a month even with a lifetime account, I am certainly not enjoying SL for free.

Our stipend is the same as a premium account, and our land allocation is 4096 instead of the 1024m that premium accounts got at the 1.2 upgrade. New premium accounts from 1.2 forward now get 512. The 1024m is actually equivalent to what we used to pay in monthly fees (14.95).

To have the Charter status you had to have bought the US$159 Lifetime membership before a certain cutoff date. I believe it only applies to those who were here in Beta. The only advantage we have over others that bought the Lifetime account is that neat "Charter Member" designation.

I remember all the debates back when they were first offered "to buy or not to buy, that is the question". Well I bought right away and am a Charter. I get the same L$500 a week stipend as every other "Resident".

I woosed out and didn't buy a life time account. I thought "Who in their right mind would pay $225 for a video game?".

HA!

My monthly tier exceeds $1000 USD now.

I was one of those that decided it was too risky to spend the money on something that might not last. I signed up for the lifetime account at the end of beta, but changed my mind before the charge went through :( I ended up not playing for a while after that, and as there were no 9.95 lifetime accounts then my original Av was gone.

Now I am kicking myself, since I rejoined last year and pay periodic fees, and don't get the 4,096 land.

A bit of clarification:

If you bought a Lifetime Account prior to SL going live, you got the discounted price, a limited edition SL poster, a T-shirt and the title "Charter Member". After SL went live, the price went up to $225 USD. Those accounts were sold until around the end of 2003.

I got the T-shirt and poster back then too, but I did not sign on for a lifetime account until the very last day at the 225$ price, around late December 2003. I also have the Charter member title.

Hm. Same here, Nolan.. but didn't get anything of the sort, or the title.

It seems that some who did the $225 got the poster/tshirt and title, and some did not.

Yeah I bought mine around the same time as Nolan and I didn't get any of that either.
