Hiro,

Your posting (now conveniently gone) didn't look like a joke to me. Perhaps you should have plastered it with smilies. :)

I felt it gave rise to some interesting comments, but evidently you disagree.

I think one of these days I'll hit Feature Suggestion with "Please rename "off-topic" to "silly off-topic don't-take-it-so-seriously forum" :) :) :) :)

:p    :p

I realise that this is only page 2, but I see Godwin heading this way.
He gets around fast these days.

Anyway, back on topic :) , I read an intersting article many yers ago that had a lot to say about why women wear what they do. In a nutshell the (female) author said that often women dress to impress (and be better than) other women, rather than to impress (and catch) guys. This was in the Cosmo, so it must be true.

Why do men wear what they do? <sexistRemark smiley="implied">Because thats what their wives and families buy them for christmas each year.</sexistRemark>

I am into girls.. must I wear a blue blouse????

No, but you must wear overalls. Meet me at the hardware store and we'll talk.

Clothing stereotypes are pernicious... but I've read at least one claim that at the turn of the last century, pink was considered a masculine color and blue a feminine one. While I haven't been able to confirm that, I do know that at various points in the history of clothing, men have worn (as standard equipment) wigs, makeup, perfume, high heels, hose, plaid skirts, ruffles, elaborate formal gowns, and every color of the rainbow.

In that historical context, a pink shirt is sort of tame.

And no, the off-topic forum will not confine itself to fluff. No, you can't retitle it with some fluffy name. Frankly, though, I wouldn't object if serious discussion was split off from fun 'n games. I get annoyed when a good meaty debate gets buried under 20 silly word game threads.

Here's my point: Paris, France decided that "pink" was in for guys this year, and people suddenly flock to a fashion that's ironically the opposite of typical male choices.

What it shows to be is a blind following of fashion, rather than using one's own judgement on what is a preferred color to wear.

Not necessarily. The fashion trends have a very real impact on what is available for purchase.

I work in a conservative banking environment, am a "suit", and I have and will continue to wear pink shirts when I can go casual (every other Fri....during Summer....excepting if there will be or could be client contact), though I wouldn't go so far as to pair one with a suit (but wouldn't care if someone else did).

I guess I should point out that I'm colorblind, but I've been told I look good in my pink duds.

Hiro,

<<;(that enough smilies?)>>

Almost - there should have been one more pink one to be equal to the blue ones. :)

Hmmm... somewhere in there I was trying to make a point about silly stereotypes, clothing, and women who like women.

But you look so darn cute in those overalls that I forgot what I was going to say :D

Hey, stop taking off topic so seriously!

Follow my example....and pretty much try to make it as obnoxious (in a hilarious way) as possible!

(OK, so I don't go by this rule in every post here, so.. sue me!)

I think a lot of guys look good in pink. And some guys would honestly look better with makeup. The "trend" has caught in more in some areas than others. Hiro is in NJ so it is probably more prevalent (however you spell that) than here in the midwest. I think it is great that nobody looks twice at a guy in pink.

And why can girls wear skirts and capris but not guys? Men, you need to take a stand and walk around your city with a skirt. Pink preferably! Just to make a stand ya know. Show you don't believe in following fashion trends. Every year Paris trots out men in pants. Always pants. So stop following fashion and become a leader ;)

You know, I just don't like pink; I don't wear it myself, and I don't buy it for my husband, and he doesn't seem to choose it for himself. He's not really one to follow clothing trends, though, and he dresses in a fairly conservative business casual style (as an engineer).

When I think of people over the age of 10 wearing pink, I think of "preppie" style or poofy bridesmaid dresses, neither of which have particularly good connotations for me. If it's gotta be pink, I'd prefer a deep plum or dusty rose shade, thanks very much.

Oh, and I keep trying to get hubby to buy a Utilikilt from this really cool shop in Seattle, but he's having none of it. ;)

Back when I was painting miniatures, I once got one that was an ogre in a T-shirt and pants waving a big gun (Warhammer 40k, I think). Just for the heck of it, I put him in olive green trousers, a nice pastel pink shirt, and a little smiley button on his chest (with a drop of "bean" juice, which some of you comic fans will appreciate). He didn't win any contests, but I was rather pleased with the result.

(My one entry that did win a prize was a woman in chainmail with a big axe, an eyepatch... and an "I {heart} NY" button. I have an odd sense of humor).

The troll is cute!

In The Pink...
09-04-2005 10:32
From: Willow Zander
I think it depends on WHAT kind of garment it is (get me, garment, I sound like my mum).

I see many guys around campus wearing pink things, and looking totally HAWT... but when at the airport a couple of months ago, I saw this guy wearing a pink wooly vneck, with his chest hair sprouting out, it really wasn't very attractive.

Personally I think its cute that guys wear pink! Shows they aren't scared to show their feminine side! or their love for pink!..

Willow,

I'm shocked, *shocked* that you would indicate that by wearing pink a man was showing his "feminine" side. Did you not read Ulrika's post!? What? Is she typing for herself??
I used to have a pink sweater in JR High School. Of course this was at a time when Don Johnson was making it ok for straight males to wear pink.

I have to disagree with Ulrika on her little litmus test, however. Just because it doesn't work in reverse doesn't mean it's sexist. All the women I've been with have looked damn fine walking around in just one of my shirts...now try picturing me in one of their dresses... Yeah. See what I mean? Is that sexist? No.
