This is not chauvinism rather this is sexism bordering on misogyny. When individuals create stereotypical female attributes and ascribe to them a negative quality, it ultimately has the effect of denigrating women.
In this case, the color pink is stereotypically associated with the female gender. What makes wearing pink undesirable for men (and some women) is not because of any intrinsic quality in the color rather it is undesirable because it's associated with femininity. It's as if the very quality of being feminine is itself negative. By repeating this bias, sexism is perpetuated and the quality of being feminine is indirectly disparaged. Is it really sexism? An excellent test is to reverse conditions to see if the same bias applies. If it doesn't, then it's sexist. In this case, are men (or women) shamed if they are caught wearing blue in public? Nope, thus it's sexist. There are many other examples in English such as "don't be a girl" (compare with "don't be a boy" ![]() ![]() As an interesting aside, what Hiro is doing is an integral part of the cycle necessary for perpetuating sexism (and all ethnocentrisms for that matter). Having been taught that pink is associated with females and that feminine qualities are inherently negative from his environment, Hiro has developed a sexist bias. Having internalized this bias, he then acts out against feminine colors by avoiding and mocking them and finally completes the cycle by teaching this bias to other people. All forms of ethnocentrism (racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, etc.) have this cycle and their respective stereotypes. Whether it's the greedy Jew or the lazy black or the weak female, they all manifest and perpetuate themselves similarly. To stop the spread, one simply has to reject the stereotype and stop the cycle which propagates the bias. So stop already! ![]() ~Ulrika~ _____________________

Depends on who you are dressing for. If you are dressing to be accepted in a male environment pink isn't a good color usually. If you are dressing to impress the ladies then yes, pink is a good color.
Here, I'll make it simple: Want to dress for business, dress like the presedent (yes, that is right the presedent sets the fashion for suits) Want to get laid, dress like Prince. There are a lot of women who really like men who aren't afraid to dress effeminatly yet still be masculine (opposed to crossdressing). _____________________

Use google image search on "pink".
Here's my point: Paris, France decided that "pink" was in for guys this year, and people suddenly flock to a fashion that's ironically the opposite of typical male choices. What it shows to be is a blind following of fashion, rather than using one's own judgement on what is a preferred color to wear. Is this good? Bad? Well, I think the blind following to commercialism is bad, and nothing new. It just amazes me of how ingrained of a "female" color this is and how quickly people will go for current fashions over trained, repeated beliefs. ... In other words, I am making more of a statement about commercialism and superficiality in appearance than gender roles of colors. -- Choosing to wear pink is fine for a guy, I think (as I indicated in my post) that guys aren't really choosing to wear this; they're just wearing it "just because" it's the fashion. _____________________

I think it depends on WHAT kind of garment it is (get me, garment, I sound like my mum).
I see many guys around campus wearing pink things, and looking totally HAWT... but when at the airport a couple of months ago, I saw this guy wearing a pink wooly vneck, with his chest hair sprouting out, it really wasn't very attractive. Personally I think its cute that guys wear pink! Shows they aren't scared to show their feminine side! or their love for pink!.. _____________________

Some women think guys in speedos are hot, too, even though most guys would probably assert their lack of fondness for the garment. But guys don't. I think guys just wear it because it's "the color to wear" this summer. _____________________

have you seen his bank statement? Have you seen his ugly-ass wig? Donald may be a good example of a businessman, but definitely not one for appearance. ![]() _____________________

Well then thats their own stupid fault isn't it, if they feel the need to conform to fashion, or to try and look cool for the layyyyyyyydeeezz, more fool them! Self confidence, personality, and your manner are attractive to me, not what colour shirt your wearing, it just points you out faster! ![]() _____________________

as opposed to blindly following sexism... and more interestingly... in hiro's world, blindly following fashion is less ok than blindly following sexism. So, how long do you intend to forum stalk me, Jauani? _____________________

Hiro,
<<What it shows to be is a blind following of fashion, rather than using one's own judgement on what is a preferred color to wear.>> To me it shows something that is practically the opposite of your statement. You seem to feel that the colour pink has some intrinsic quality that should make it inimical to the male gender. In fact pink is a colour like any other colour, and has no qualities of its own other than those we associate with it. If you have a negative view, then perhaps this represents a blind following of stereotypes rather than using one's own judgement. Selador (secret quiche eater) _____________________
