I'm still interested and I might be able to DM sometime - but not for a couple weeks at least. I'm a bit busy at the moment and next week I'll be traveling.
I think having a meeting is a good idea - if for nothing else than to find more players who might not read the forums, like Ursa suggested. If people see the event on the list they might be intrigued and attend.

Ok, if we're going to do an event, what time would be good for most people?

Well, i have XML-RPC working now, which will make exchange of character sheets and other data a little easier.
Six sided die done, but got to get 10 sided done which will be a pain, might just wuss out and go for the text only roll for it.
But again, im going the HARM or RM route rather than D20, just a preference thing on my part.

I can do evenings around 7pm PST or most weekends midday.

From: Moleculor Satyr Ok, we can't get our forum until we have 15 members. Since we had 12 the last time I checked, we just need three more. Anyone else want in?
Anyone wanna DM? (I'll do it if I absolutely have to, but I can't guarantee I'll be consious at the times I dictate. I'm bad about that whole "regular sleep schedule" thing.) I can't commit to DMing, but I'd be interested in joining a game if y'all get something going. So, I guess I make 13 interested, eh?

I have a physical, scripted d20 rolling around on my plot doing weight tests. If you want to go visit and watch them roll, you're more than welcome to. You can even grab the stats (which I'm afraid might not actually be "good" stats, which means the physical d20 is somehow weighted) by touching the red sphere, if you can position your camera to get at it. I've nearly crashed the sim twice now, had to re-tweak the experiment to avoid that, hopefully it won't crash over the next twelve hours or so while I sleep and then vote. Magenta, (120,20)

personally I'd use a normal object with a script that spat out the die rolls...
In the real world dice are easy... in the virtual world a script is easy.
Pushing physical dice around may well look very cool - but it's practicality is limited.
If I'm gonna be lagged, I'd rather be lagged by someones cool looking character AV.
Siggy.

Hey Mole - that D20 rolling around looks pretty cool. Didn't seem to noticably lag the sim when I was there either. It would be fun if we can really use these if they are stable / random enough.
As for meeting - I'm out of town this week (starting Tuesday) so I won't be able to show up this week but after that my schedule is pretty open and flexible.

Siggy. True, however, coding a die was a nice little challege (actually, it was creating the die that was the challenge, and I ended up having to buy and emulate a d20 from Xylor Basklef), and it looks cool. I can easily write up a normal script if these don't work out right. I like doing things the hard way.

I actually made a d20 model a couple of days back, using some mathematical formulae to calculate the vertices of the icosehadron and then rezzing small spheres at these points to provide a rough framework. Then I calculated the length and height of the triangular faces, and the rotations of these faces and moved them onto the framework. The result is publicly available on my land in Grant. My intent was to merely use these dice as the icon for a simple random number generator, as I doubt that havok can really allow a d20 to roll randomly.

For people too lazy to see them in game, photos of the D20s are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/goshua/tags/d20/

Nice Gosh, is it physics operated? or just told what side to put up based on a random call.
I made the d6 pure physics, they just come into existance at a random rotation and then get "thrown" with a little force, works ell, but sometimes they end up "spinning" i could see that happening a lot more with a d20.

Moleculor and Ardith made the dice. Moleculor's is Pyhsics based. Ardith's is just a model. Moleculor is testing it for accuracy in that arena. The D20 actually lands on a face a lot of the time and doesnt spin so much.

I was going to get a nice little graph going on that black screen, but I couldn't get it working in time before I went to bed last night.
Stats right now aren't honestly looking good, with approximately a 25% (based on the highest frequency) difference between the lowest frequent number and the highest frequent number). Looks like my dice are weighted. Only four or so of the numbers are coming up with higher or lower frequency, but that's still no good.
I wish I'd thought of vertexes. I might've actually gotten somewhere with building it through a script. I'll give my dice a bit more time, but I'm not seeing the differences even out over time (in fact I'm seeing them grow), so I'm guessing my dice really are innacurate (which is to be expected, considering I basically took a 40 prim die made by Xylor and eyeballed it down to 20, piece by piece, and even I can see the seams).
I'll probably set Ardith's die up next, since it's a 20 prim die too. It's made of boxes rather than prisms, and I don't know for sure how the physics engine will handle that, but no harm in trying. (But I don't think my texture will work on the die. Not that it matters much.)
If that doesn't work, I'll try doing the vertex thing with prisms, see if I can figure out how to do that. Rotations make my head hurt.

Got a graph up. Now that I've done that, I'll see if Ardith can't help me out with 'er genius math skills and get this vertex thingy doing with prisms. Or maybe I can get it before Ardith logs back on. Dunno. (EDIT: Ooo! I love Wikipedia! It has the answer for me! Now I just have to figure out how to use vertex info to calculate rotation.)
Anywho, here's a picture of the graph. The flatter the curve, the more balanced the die is. As you can see, I've got some nasty spikes and warbles. That's bad for the mojo, don'tcha know?

Do we have enough members for a group forum yet? Or should i send invites to random newbies at the welcome area?

I am trying to purchase a large piece of land if we need something big (13000+) - would be happy to have an arena there somewhere - if I get it of course. Four more hours.

I didn't discover until after the fact that my model cannot be easily textured. Mole's model looks really good, though, so I may just wait to see what he does.
By the way, thanks for posting the images, Gosh. They were really helpful.
I did most of the math on some scratch paper, so I don't have my exact calculations for determining rotations. Basically, you're just dealing with triangles so it's a matter of trig. I quick whipped together a simple diagram. Hopefully it explains things.

Well, after thorougly embarrasing myself by posting randomly, I'm finally here. I've read up on what's going on, and I'd love to participate. I actually had this same thought independantly, just about a week after everyone else. Ah well.
I'd be interested in DM'ing the first game, since no one else seem to be jumping at the prospect. what about something small to test the fesability of the concept? Say... first level, four or five people, short campaign (5-6 nights total)?
We can do it on my parcel in Clara, or where ever else it is appropriate (I'd prefer to do it in Clara, that way I have music and terraform control)
Any day up until 2:30 PST works for me, and I have all day on Sunday and Monday, so I'm thinking Sunday or Monday night.
Sooooo... who's in for the first D&D session in SL?
Post or IM me in world to figure it out.
