Instead of "going outside" and "enjoying fresh air" and "time with friends" and all that crap on this 3 day weekend, I spent it playing Second Life in 3d. Like, real 3D. Or at least, as real as you can get with 2 projectors, 2 nice systems, polarized lenses, and a virtual world. :)

I hooked up two machines running two different SL accounts to our polarized projection system at the lab, and it worked great! I've written up a full explanation of the project on my website (grammar checking will happen tomorrow, to sleepy to do english/theory checks tonight, so it's essentially a brain dump), as well as putting it in notecard/animation form in-world.

The lab is at Deneb(232, 187)

Neat hack :) I'd love to see more support for 3D display systems like this.

This sounds quite impressive to me.

I recall mentioning to someone using two avatars to get two viewpoints for use with stereo lcd monitor glasses, putting the avatars on a vehicle using the lsl camera control functions. I didn't think about the fact that the signals would not come in synchronously.

You should be able to drive a 3d display from one computer with the right drivers.. nvidia has a 3d mode that looks at the z-values of the scene to render in stereo. I'm not sure if it's able to drive two separate displays though, it interlaces video for use with shutterglasses

I predict an instant migraine if I were to try this... but it would probably be worth it.

Actually, the polarized method of 3D is REALLY nice. It's very natural for your eyes, and way better than Red-Blue.

Great hack, by the way. And I too seem to remember some way to make 3D programs do that naturally.

smn my partly misaligned eyes, doulbe-damn my folks for correcting the alignment for cosmetic reasons and blowing my stereo vision out of whack, along with aspet and color.
I can't enjoy 3-d movies either.

Nice! I've seen similar applications that use multiple, networked 'avatars' to create more than one viewport using single-display graphics boards (using Quake mods and the like). I'm a little suprised it works so well with SL, given that the two accounts are not connected directly via a LAN but instead via an external server. The two images must get out of sync quickly!?

I'm lucky enough to have an undistributed client-side mutator for Unreal Tournament that is similar to another funny mod for Quake3, that splits the screen in 2 realtime stereoscopic views of the game (will get a screenshot or two as I get back home).

I'd love to have that in SL :)

From 3d Vision to a metaphor on relationships... Things like this are why I use SL. XD

I still have the polarized glasses for Disney :D

It was great fun to visit qDot inworld at his lab in Deneb and listen to him explain more about this—and many other projects he's working on in the pipeline!

VERY cool qDot! Interesting, but why use glasses? :D

Just wait a year or two for commercially affordable autostereoscopic displays and accelerator cards.

Which NVIDIA card supports this?

  1. Put on sale a key mod that makes SL more like an FPS
  2. Made my own custom attachment points - looking for a good use
  3. Found "secret" login screen.
  4. Created a way to call Java methods from LSL --> Thread

All NVIDIA cards should be able to support it, as far as I know. Go here for their latest stereo driver. You'll need to make sure your graphics driver and stereo driver are the same version, though.

I've used my shutterglasses with SL via the NVIDIA stereo driver, and the results are quite impressive. Best not to do it for too long, though, as you may start to feel a bit headachey and queasy after extended use.

more 'real' 3D instead of 'hey, our graphics cards will do 3D - on a 2d MONITOR!' PLeeeease... disconcerting to hear about 3d when they ain't really talkin' 'bout the 'real thing'!! :)

Yeah, that's the nice thing about our system, it's pretty easy on the eyes. It was originally built to measure driver fatigue for remote human-controlled driving of Lunar rover missions.

You get a Similar effect (to some extent) by taking two identical pictures, placing them side by side, and simply crossing your eyes so that the double images mesh together.

Example: Look at the middle of this picture and slightly cross your eyes so that the images look as if they've met in the middle, meshed together. It gives the picture the illusion of depth.

If im wrong and this is NOT what you're doing please tell me so I dont look so stupid next time c(: ^_^

Close, but you're missing one crucual step: the images need to be from two slightly different viewpoints, just like our eyes see things from two slightly different viewpoints. If you use two identical images, then no part of the merged picture will look any closer or further than any other part... which kinda defeats the whole purpose of making it stereo. :p

Err... what do you mean by this, Nyoko? The NVIDIA stereo drivers aren't meant to be used alone, they're intended for use with LCD shutterglasses. It produces 3D that's just as "real" as the method qDot is talking about. :)

Beatfox, I think they meant "3D" in terms of perspective corrected graphics in games shown on a monitor in 2D. All the math considers things in >2 dimensions, but the end result is a 2d picture even though we call it 3d :)
