From what I heard about the etymology of "rezz", it was indeed first coined in Tron, but later adopted by sci-fi authors to describe exactly the same thing. "Resolve", cause something to come into physical (virtual) being from a stored or "data" state. I want to say that it was William Gibson, but I've only read 2 of his books, I can't remember completely. The term was part of the scifi future hacker-speak, used to lend flavor to the dialog. Anyhoo, the movie-term-turned-scifi-term seemed to perfectly describe the type of actions that happen in a virtual world, and so it became adopted by the community early on as the verb of choice to describe that particular action. :)

That's fascinating.

Also of interest is the fact that "rez" is used as a term to refer to Native American reserves in some places.

Also can refer to a student residence. I lived "in rez", but quickly smartened up and found another place to stay. :)

I think we can safely assume that our use of rez and de-rez is from Tron.

Some lingo I use or heard peoples and friendlies around me use.

Friendlies -- Not only do I have their calling card, but I also speak to them from time to time. Or I owe them money, either of the two.

Hermitage -- When I spend vast amounts of time, in one plot doing something or nothing.

Sorry, IM -- My lame excuse when I've totally zoned out of the conversation and realise someone asked me something. (Actually, I shouldn't have said that ... need to think up something new now) LOL

Rebuilding -- In actually, procrastinating and no amount of encouragement will get me to move my ass faster. Ex. Q: When are you going to ...? A: Not for a bit, been tied up cuz I'm rebuilding. (Hmm, shouldn't have said that either) ROFL

Ack! I'm stuck!, Argh, I'm looping, or Oh no ... I've Balled -- When you try an animation, hop off and the animation is still controlling your avatar. This can have embarassing results especially when chair-hopping (see below) in the the adult section.

Chair-hopping -- When one has no money and is in a mall, one can amuse themselves by sitting on a row of chairs, couches, beds, tables, cubes on display. I've managed to circle around a whole store in this manner. Got stuck spanking myself only twice. :p

Tele-hopping or Hub-hopping -- Something I did before teleporting got borky. I just TPed from hub to hub. This was before I found the allure of hermitage and chair-hopping.

Ruthinized -- A big reason why I no longer do my hub-hops around the grid. Nothing more shocking to have one's old nose reform onto themselves ... Along with the old hips and bad boob job.

Mod/Tweak -- Modified or edited.

Lashed -- When a perfectly good 27 prim chair is stripped down by moi and retextured so that it is a 7 prim couch. It hasn't been modded or tweaked. It's been Lashed with my inane preference for low primmy-ness.

Noober -- Something I call myself from time to time when I find out "shortcuts" in building that aren't really shortcuts but features that have been present since beta and I was just too daft to figure out first time I started.

Can't think of anymore just yet. Gonna log now anyway. :D

I didn't know about the student residence one! :)

Ah, Tron . . . a movie I have never watched... a soundtrack I have always heard.

You MUST watch Tron. Add it to your Netflix cue right this minute.

It's actually a pretty well-done movie, considering that it was 1982. Alot of people seem to like poking fun of it as a bad movie, like Ishtar or something, but really it's actually pretty good.

Side Note: The academy awards witheld Tron from the Special Effects category for consideration, because it used computer-created special effects. This was considered cheating, or at the least ineligible for an award.

Pre 1.4 and custom animations Lynn Lippman and I had some fun ones:

Cubin' -- the act of 2 avatars having sex.. (due to having to use cubes made transparent)

Cuba -- mythical land 300m above the planet where much cubin' was happenin'

I think Lynn was the first to say someone had been 'Siggified' - had something very stupid done to them..

Has anyone mentioned 'Ghosted' or 'Orbited' yet..

of course there is 'Griefed'.
Land Barons - Barony...

Primmy! -- using an excessive number of prims.

Crapfactories -- (Malls? I think Maxx Monde was the first one I heard coin this phrase.. as in 'Particle spewing crapfactories sprang up all around my land')

Some new ones that are emerging:

Yokozuna'd -- someone just jumped on your face and farted.

I coined one today "The bouncy bouncies" aka Rapid Frog Syndrome... its that unexplained phenomena that happens when all of the sudden you start bouncing through the ground and build sim after sim and then need to relog to get out of rapid frog mode.

When vehicles first came out I deleted the motorcycle I was riding and was trapped in the motorcycle_sit anim.... we couldn't find out what it was called so it became known as

'The Manlove pose'

"vitriol" = anything someone says in the forums that you don't like. You get a +2 Charisma modifier and +3 to Intelligence for correctly identifying it in type (you may use any form of the word, including vitriolic, but the word you use must CLEARLY be derived from the root "vitriol";). There is an additional +2 Wisdom modifyer for not responding with anything that your opponent could also reasonably identify as "vitriol", plus a -2 Intelligence modifier to your opponent, if they are unable to apply the word "vitriol" back against you within that turn. All modifiers last for 3 turns, and any disputes are judged by the DM.

OMG TORLEY!!!! GO OUT AND BUY A COPY ON DVD IMMEDIATELY!!!! YOU WILL BE AMAZED! And considering it was made with early 80's technology, it's a technological marvel in itself! That movie is what got me interested in VR to begin with! It is a MUST see!

Edit: yea I mentioned "ghosting" in a previous post.

Who has a word to describe people who you can only see their attachments???

And what would you call it when that person, in order to bee seen by you fully, must switch into appearance mode and back so they rez correctly for you?

Also, what would you call the pre-full-resolution textures you see as they are rezzing in? How about fuzzy textures? ummm fuzztures? err... blurxtures? AAH I give up!

Swimming - trying to move across the room while lagged.

Pranking - Usually involves adding props to an AFK person and taking snapshots.

Bowling - Dragging an object around with the mouse, and causing it to strike people nearby.

Taco Time - Mexican fast food chain, or peeking up a girls skirt with the camera angle.

Cam'ing - Peering around (often snooping), with the camera view.

Ejector Seat - Getting sent flying when you stand after sitting on a prim, or getting tossed from your seat when a slow to rez piece of clothing appears.

Avi is one I don't think has been mentioned yet. (Avi=Avatar)

Perms = Permission settings on prims/objects (modify/copy/transfer)

I believe the others I can think of have already been mentioned. :)

I prefer Av over Avi, cuz the correct spelling of Avatar is, well, Avatar. :p

Sometimes referred to as avvies also let's add that in too...

Skank= The generic "escort" avvie girls who all look alike and have the hair time forgot, usually blonde with a dark tan "OMG look at that skank she's all over him"

Skank Legs= Freakishly long out of proportion legs "Does this skirt make me look like I have skank legs?"

The word Avatar actually has some very interesting origins... check it out:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&oi=defmore&q=define:Avatar

Gives kind of a new meaning to "We are all gods in VR!" doesn't it hehee
