I just rented a couple of few movies and watched them, some I liked, some which I found mediocre.

Against people's reviews of the butterfly effect with Ashton Kutcher and Amy smart, I found the movie to be immersive and gripping not worthy of the bad reviews that it had. I particularly enjoyed the ending (well, I wont say it here, for it'll be a spoiler) But I heard that there was 2 version, the dvd and the theatrical version.

I guess this movie would be one of my recommended list.

Another movie I loved was "big fish" I think it was the over the top storyline, the graphics and the whole magical feel to the story. Tim Burton is a genious

I dont know why I loved eternal sunshine and the spotless mind so much. Its still one of my favourites. Sure, it can be draggy. Its the concept I think. Will you want to forget all of your problems, throubles? Will you be willing to erase all of the memories? Carry on with life?

A line from eternal sunshine

Joel : I will not regret if die right now, Clem. I'm just...happy. I've never felt that before. I'm just exactly where I want to be.

I also liked life is beautiful, I dont think such a person like the dad exists. (happy 27/7) but it was touching, and is one of the rare movies that actually made me cry

Pleasantville was cool to watch. From the carefree, clean and conservative black and white, they slowly changed to colour picture. It was an interesting transition. I enjoyed watching that, very much.

Anyhow, what movies would you recommend/is your favourite? Why? :)

Greetings -
First off - I have totally my own style of taste in everything - I like many different sorts of things and usually find something I like in everything - so my picks may not be the most critical - I just enjoyed them - I won't say very much about each as what I liked may not help at all.

If you liked Big Fish, which I loved also, you may like Secondhand Lions.

Shrek and Shrek2 are fun, be a kid again movies, love the donkey.
Finding Nemo - be young - I loved the turtles.
Ice Age - more kidness - Sid, gotta love sloths

Brazil is interesting - but darque, watch a comedy after it.

Dawn of the Dead was actually pretty good for that sort.

Pirates of the Caribean, Depp mmmmm , League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, both for Adventure types.

50 First Dates had me laughing so much at times I cried.

Matchstick Men, and Gone in 60 Seconds, Cage I like.

Paycheck was interesting too.

Enough from me

:)

Mulholland Drive - David Lynch

Mulholland Drive is a somewhat disconnected but haunting movie, a bizarre cross between hallucination and reality as equal and indistinguishable. The story is set in an old Los Angeles (Fairfax District), sort of a benign Jewish neighborhood with a light exterior and a dark and oblique menace of an interior.

I've watched it about six times now and still find things that I missed the first time through.

Magnolia - Paul Thomas Andersen

Magnolia is the dark study of nine lives and one day in the San Fernando Valley, these nine lives all connect and revolve around the game show "What Do Kids Know?" Everything is SO connected - starting from the very first scene in the movie - but you don't get it until the end of the movie.

I've watched this one about three times now. Amazed each time the way it all comes together. Oh - BTW - the "raining frogs" is really cool!

The Big Lebowski - Joel Coen

It's about finding a poetic soul beneath the idiosyncratic and frequently dysfunctional veneer of "Americana." (took this from a review - but it says it so much better than I can.)

Can't remember how many times I've seen this one - everytime my brother (who lives in San Diego) and I get together we watch it.

All of these movies are a little dark, a little puzzling and a little funny in ways that you know you should not be laughing (but you are) - which makes them disturbing.

Yesterday I watched *love, actually* for the third time :) I really love that movie and all of its diverse ensemble cast. It's a feel good movie and I guess most guys would call it a chick flick but who cares if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside? :D It has Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Rodrigo Santoro, Emma Thompson and a bunch of other great actors in it, following several storylines that are connected in one way or the other. I love Colin Firth's and the portuguese maid's story but I can't pick a favorite one because the crazy brit that runs off to america with a back pack full of condoms is hilarious but cute at the same time, just as the one with Liam Neeson and his stepson is endearing. Can you tell I love this film? :)

*Queen Margot* is another one of my all time favorite movies, although I haven't watched in a while. I think it's so well made and compelling, really draws you in, but then again, I'm a sucker for period and foreign films :)

Can't send this off without mentioning *The English Patient* and *Amelie* :D

I would SERIOUSLY recommend

Boys Don't Cry

Based on actual events. Brandon Teena is the popular new guy in a tiny Nebraska town. He hangs out with the guys, drinking, cussing, and bumper surfing, and he charms the young women, who've never met a more sensitive and considerate young man. Life is good for Brandon, now that he's one of the guys and dating hometown beauty Lana. However, he's forgotten to mention one important detail. It's not that he's wanted in another town for GTA and other assorted crimes, but that Brandon Teena is actually a woman named Teena Brandon. When Brandon's best friends make this discovery, his life eventually is ripped apart by betrayal, humiliation, rape, and murder.

VERY VERY good film, made me want to cry, and also I rushed out and bought the documentary afterwards, also VERY interesting and comes in at a comletely different perspective

:)

Ah I was going to skip this thread but then I saw the quote from the song Iris and was lured in.

I would like to add to this list a couple of charged movies that stir emotion.

On deadly ground

A walk in the clouds

and...

oh boy.. someone is going to laugh...

Far and Away

I can relate to that it, made me shed a tear once also. This gorgeous, intelligent, witty, exotic , loving woman I know came to visit me, we spent an incredible week together and after watching her plane fly off Iris came on the radio as I was leaving the airport. I wondered if I would ever see her again and then it happened.. a tear.. or maybe two...

Lucky for me not only did she come back for another visit .. she married me a year or so later!! :)

Favorite Movies that I recommend but of course they are all old, but if you haven't seen them you can rent them.

1. The Color Purple---Directed by Steven Spielburg---The life and trials of a young African Amercan Woman.

2. Braveheart---Directed by Mel Gibson---William Wallace, a commoner, unites the 13th Century Scots in their battle to overthrow English rule.

3. Saving Private Ryan---Directed by Steven Spielburg---Based on a World War II drama. US soldiers try to save their comrade, paratrooper Private Ryan, who's stationed behind enemy lines.

I have many more favs, but these are the top 3.

Huggerz,
MJ :)

I don't know Magnolia, but i am going to fix it. the other two movies are simply great, so the third one you mentioned will be at least a good movie. Possibly a very good one.

My suggestion to you is to go to the foreign film section of your video store. There are a lot of unappreciated gems out there.

I have seen some movies coming out of Iran and Afghanistan that were far superior to anything coming out of Hollywood lately.

Of course, the French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, Brasilian and Mexican film industry always puts out impressive work.

You will find most foreign films have no need for extreme gore, sex and violence to entertain their audience.

Enjoy,

- T -

Tito,
actually, foreign film section of my video store includes Hollywood products. I am italian, and i totally agree with you on quality of USA foreign films.
Obviously, there's A LOT of really great USA films, but simply not all Hollywood production achieves a good level of quality and, on the other side, really good films can be made by people coming from any country all over the world.
An example, even if it is a funny movie, not to be compared to any true masterwork, is Shaolin Soccer. I laughed to death seeing it.
And now that you mentioned Mexico, here is another of my favorite movies: El Mariachi.

Anything by the Cohen brothers
Anything by Kubrick
Anything by Kurosawa
Anything by Hitchcock
Nothing by any French director except Truffaut, and I mean it!
A small number of recent Chinese films, including Raise the Red Lantern
A small number of Japanese anime films, including Akira and Spirited Away.

And the classic Hollywood commercial movies -- including Casablanca, Shane, Forbidden Planet, and On the Waterfront.

I recently rented Coffee & Cigarettes by Jim Jarmusch (Ghost Dog, Stranger Than Paradise, Mystery Train). It's a bunch of shorts with various actors. Each short is basically 2 or 3 people (except one with Cate Blanchett talking to herself as 2 characters) having a conversation while sitting at the table with coffee & cigarettes. There is no no plot.
My favorites one was with Rza, Gza, & Bill Murray. After that probably the one with Iggy Pop & Tom Waits. The scene with Alfred Molina & Steve Coogan was pretty funny also.
