Right now we're waiting for a DNS change to trickle through to the rest of the world. Hopefully this'll happen in the next 20 minutes or so but DNS tends to be a bit recalcitrant.
Like so many problems of late, this seems to have been caused by hardware failure in a crucial bit of equipment. I brought up a spare but unfortunately had to use a different IP. Hence the DNS change.

*twitch* Not only that, they're demanding thiers come back up first and immediately because they a) Have a presentation b) Just launched an advertising campaign c) Are losing customers d) Are losing thousands of dollars. All within the span of 15 minutes. Gimmie a freaking break. =p

All within the span of 15 minutes. Gimmie a freaking break. =p I know that feeling.. my company deals with about 200+ dealers.. but they all insist that they are going to lose a deal because something that was unavoidable.. no sysadmin ever PLANS to have a crash. however it happens all to many a time... I would fear for the Life of LL if they ever started a Hosting Company.....

how funny.
I noticed the board slowdown, then saw all the users browsing, and my first thought was "Hey, I bet the grid is down".
Sure enough, here's a post telling us the grid is down. LOL

Dont want to sound rude... but i always thougt a DNS change could take a lot longer to be effective everywhere...

It's likely a hard coded server name somewhere in the login process.

::cries:: Oh god... A DNS change... I had to move one of *my* servers on Friday, and the DNS change hasn't reached my ISP yet... No SL for me for a week! ::cries more:: No, really, though. Thanks for letting us know. ::grins:: =[EDIT]= : macks forehead:: Oh, unless you're waiting for *internal* network propagation... /me is a spaz, some days.

From: someone Originally posted by Riffey4 DeGroot but i always thougt a DNS change could take a lot longer to be effective everywhere... It depends on the TTL set in their zone file - hopefully it was a short one! (Well, that's assuming the nameserver you're using respects TTLs....)

Hence the DNS change. 20 minutes? I'll be lucky to see this by sometime tomorrow, as slow as Verizon is picking these things up. This is ludicrous. How about you power down the bad piece of equipment and re-address the new one with the same IP and hostname. This isn't rocket science, and the whole thing is down anyway so powering down isn't going to hurt anything. I'd also suggest you make your server names and/or addresses configurable so they can just be changed in the client. As someone else noted, you could also supply the hostname and IP data and we can use host tables to bypass DNS. Yet another unacceptable infrastructure failure...

Now the logon message says its up but is closed to employees only. Sounds like the DNS change got around. Not sure why we are locked out though. As to the friends online list, its not correct, trust me.

Hmm... yeah, a host tables bypass would be an excellent hack around. So, how about it, o, great and spiffy Lindens? Will you give us the name and IP? : its with fingers hovering over /etc/hosts:: =[EDIT]= I just tried again to log in, and SL choked on a DNS error. Unfortunately, this error crashes the client, so I didn't get to read the whole thing.

TTL

As long as they already set the TTL low, then the change shoudl push through pretty quickly then the DNS change should ripple through pretty quickly, unless your ISP is being weird about it. Though I would be nice to know what the change is so that those of us who can find their host files could just hack them. Ren

If you're still having problems getting in, right-click on the Second Life shortcut, and add the following (should be one line) at the end of the Target --agni -user 66.150.244.193 -loginuri https://login.agni.lindenlab.com/cgi-bin/login.cgiThis'll bypass the DNS lookup of the machine that's down.

For one brilliant minute, I was in. Then I had to log off, because I wanted a cigarette (hack hack hack) and now I can't get on again, dammit.
