going by the time of the original post here, and your post, that's 11 minutes...

How much time do you think putting up the grid after failure should take?

I believe 'Developer' would be the official job title for people who know enough about the system to troubleshoot when things go awry :P

I feel for them - I really do. Dealing with "fix it now!" clients when a critical piece of a network fails is one of the reasons we're outsourcing all our hosting after 9 years of tending lovingly to our servers ourselves. It's a thankless and soul-destroying business.

(Edited to remove the word 'farms' - we don't have that many servers!)

Likely because the forum server is handling a far greater number of people than normal.

grid failure
09-06-2004 14:10
putting up the grid after a failure should take less than 1 second - sheesh, everyone knows that.

How is there 11 minutes between

09-06-2004 04:17 PM

and

09-06-2004 04:38 PM

???

That's 21 minutes. Maybe a math refresher course is in order? :p And we're going on to close to an hour now.

Uh right with that many sims to reload plus the asset, user and other servers if that took all but one second I'd be EXTREMELY impressed and want to know where they got their computers.

Note: No actual hamsters were injured while taking this photo, Skippy just likes to play dead once in awhile.

Welcome to my world. Heh.

It's labor day and I'm at work stuck on an ancient computer that can't run SL. *cries*

Oh, and the forum speeds when this many people get on is rediculous... you need to transfer some gerbil wheels from the desolate snow sims to the forum server. :P

Blargh. I am sooo close to finishing my Burning Life display. I was in the process of stretching a prim when I was booted. I'm soo glad it's been extended until the 15th of September.

I've since used the down time to go through all my SL email, reorganize my SL project directories, and create my remaining Burning Life textures. Ooooh! Hurry hurry hurry.

So shoot me - my 2 key fell off a few weeks ago and I have to press the little stickie up thingie to type a 2 :P

I guess your initial post just gave me the impression that you thought LL were sitting around, eating donuts and twiddling their thumbs - and not rushing around fixing things as quickly as they possibly could.

And Haney has now posted an announcement about the downtime, anyway.

It always amazed me that my own customers somehow thought that when a server went down, my priority would be 1) Call every single customer and explain the situation to them, and THEN 2) go fix it.

Trust me, investigating and fixing are probably waaaay uppermost on their minds right now over worrying about us tapping our feet in the forums!
