I just want to say, that I am very dissiappointed in the Town Hall meeting. I watched as members of the forums had 3, 4 and even 5 questions answered and then to top it, a few who also attended got 2-3 more questions answered on top of the questions they asked from the forums. Yet, just before the meeting began, I asked the various lindens there if I could pass along a question by a citizen who could not make the meeting. I was told it was fine to give the card. And I did so.

SO I sat there while other people got their questions answered and then it was over. Then I asked why my question was not answered. and it was stated because I used a note card.

The person eventually got their question answered, I think. But the whole meeting left me with a very bitter taste in my mouth, and with the knowledge that not all citizens in Second Life are equal.

I agree, Magnum. This anti-notecard, pro-punctuality administration is despicable.

Someone's gotta. Are you daft? You show up at the last minute, and you present them a question in non-standard format. When they overlook your question, you begin squealing about bias. Despite the fact that you admit the question was probably answered in private.

Please, dear sir! Share with us this most glorious question!

I am sorry if I appear to be rude, but you have been ignoring the notices. We are now forced to turn this over to our collection agency. And, you KNOW what kind of collection agency the FIC uses. Watch out for Vinnie, he likes to break fingers. Guido will pay special attention to your knees.

And, for heaven's sake, Magnum. CHEER UP! :p

I know what you mean though Magnum. A couple weeks ago SL did a lottery for store space. Luck of the draw right? I wonder. I know 17 people, including myself who entered. Not a single one of us got a store lease. However a surprising number of SL'ers who's names you always see did "win" a lease. Coincidence? Perhaps. But don't let it stress you. Take note and move on. Actually from my perspective, not a lot different from RL. LOL

Excuse me, but YOU have not paid your dues to my thug rental agency. Guido, being one of my best agents, will be by in a short bit to help explain the benifits of prompt, if not early, payment.

Hey Mags,

Don't take it personally. They can't get to every question, and it sounds like there is a good chance that ALOT of people had time to get theirs in before yours. And it's not that big of a deal is it?

Out of approximately 145 entrants, 73 received lots. That means there were roughly 50/50 odds of someone getting a lot, though those odds may actually vary depending on whether more people applied for Luna lots than Busy Ben lots. These figures assume an equal number of applicants for both, which may be incorrect.

I've now participated in two store lotteries. I lost the first one I entered, and I won this time.

A brief analysis of the Luna winners reveals that the median number of posts per winner was 85.5. The post counts for these winners are listed below. It would also be interesting to view age for the winners and the number of times a winner has previously won. However, I have work to do and so I'm going to have to end my rudimentary statistical analysis here.

I think it is safe to say that Luna probably had 3x or 4x as many entrants as Bens.

Ardith, your analysis is interesting, but it might be even more interesting to look at who didn't win a Luna spot but entered. That should be fairly straightforward, although time consuming. Getting their post count should be simpler, though.

The median and mean post count should be roughly the same for the two groups, I would think...

You are correct, Jon. In an ideal situation, the median post counts in the two groups should be relatively close. If you or someone else doesn't do it before tonight, I might give it a shot when I get home from work. Getting post counts isn't so difficult, just boring. It's a copy+paste and click through two screens operation. If there were a list or a csv of post count available, it would be a lot easier to work with. Someone does have a birthdate database though, don't they?

Of course, the median and mode could be spoiled by a couple of abnormally big posters getting accepted or rejected, but we'll see how that turns out after those numbers are actually run.

Okay, I decided to do it...

Here's the list of Luna entrants, with their join date and post count:

To summarize here:

Total # of entrants: 128
Average post count: 434
Median post count: 109

Total number of Luna Winners: 39
Luna Entrants who did not win: 89

Below are the raw results, sorted by post count. You can clearly see that there are a lot of big-posters who didn't win.

Each entrant had a less than 1 in 3 chance of winning a spot, assuming a fair draw. Given the mean and median results, I'd say the draw must have been fair.

Very nice work, Jon. It looks like you ran the median and mean for the entire set. Did you also calculate these averages for just those who did not win?

Oh, I shall kep trying. I'm not bitter about not winning last time, I was just using my own example as a tiny bit of anecdotal evidence for the approximately 50% probability. This time, I entered in Busy Ben which I think greatly enhanced my odds. Luna is evidently far more competitive. Though last time I learned my lesson. After losing the drawing, I bought one of the anchor stores. I ended up not using 90% of the space. It was a waste.

Congrats on winning, Katykiwi.

Yeah, I just did that:

Post count for those who did not win in Luna:

Mean: 394
Median: 110

So there's something of an issue, but I suspect Willow is skewing the results with her huge post count.

Without her, the winners average drops from 507 to 350, but the overall average only drops to 386.

I think we're good...

I didn't win the Luna lottery. I don't expect to win. I know they hate me, I don't have any exciting content to sell, the thing I sell is real estate and I'd put ads for that in my Luna shop, that doesn't fit with their agenda, so hasta la vista, but whatever, c'est la vie.

I have to say that the Town Hall meetings thing perplexes me. The first 4 meetings I sent to, I couldn't seem to get a question in, even asking in advance, even sending it to the moderator.

This time, I put in a question in the forum designated spot, but while asked, it didn't really get answered.

When I saw that Robin seemed to keep saying "Next" and "Next" very curtly and abruptly, like she was trying to move things along, I thought maybe they had actually run out of questions. I suppose it could happen.

So even though I had already had a turn, I put in another question. And to my surprise, the moderator put it in.

You would think they'd try harder to give everyone a chance. I can't be blamed for putting in extra questions when I can't be sure they don't have room for more. But they could be trying to have more.

I suspect they want to get across some points and only talk about certain topics, so they accepted some questions and steered some others and ignored the ones that didn't fit.

That's fine, but then maybe call it " A Conversation With Robin About the Land Sales List" instead of "A Linden Town Hall Meeting.

Someone's gotta. Are you daft? You show up at the last minute, and you present them a question in non-standard format. When they overlook your question, you begin squealing about bias. Despite the fact that you admit the question was probably answered in private.

Please, dear sir! Share with us this most glorious question!

I was there a whole hour before the meeting began. I passed a question from someone who could not make it via note card

I asked an hour before the event began if I could give them the note card

I am sorry, I do not seek approval from the star chamber before I ask questions.

CHEER UP! :p

God you can even make a joke a rude remark

Sigh, it must seem so to you, but obviously you are humor-impaired. :(

LOL

I won a spot in that drawing.

Ever heard of me?

Magnum,

Did it occur to you that maybe having sent in a notecard instead of simply IMing the question like everyone else was a problem, or that the question was just accidentally overlooked (especially since they had to refer to a notecard instead of the open IMs)? Why does every single thing have to be about bias? I asked several questions that were not answered, and several that were, simply by IMing them to Jeska Linden in a concise format as I thought of them. One of them I also reworded, and then the question was asked. It's fine to be upset that your question was not addressed, but to claim bias just because of that is lame.
