So suddenly theres a post or two about the Teen Grid and it not working or something...

Is it open? And if so, how come there wasn't a big announcement? All this lead up and then nothing?

I understand the seperation, and I support it, but a "Hey guys the teen grid is now active!" would have been nice.

So in short... what the hell?

(Renamed for more forum friendly title. I have nothing against Tringo.)

It's invisible to us, so aside from a few people who have kids or know them, I don't get what the hubbub is all about.

Invitation Only
Beginning April 20th we'll start to slowly let teens aged 13 to 17 into a special grid, not accessible to the Second Life main grid. The Teen Grid will be available by invitation only, with invitations being made available in groups of 5 to the teens on the grid so they can invite their friends. There will also be some people who come in through the Second Life website, who will be put in a queue and invited by Linden Lab. In addition, some people who had surreptitiously found a way into the main Second Life grid but who had to wait, after all, for their very own space, the Teen Grid, will be invited to join.

Hmm, I saw that post, but forgot about the date.

Sorry, I tried to change it after I realized that no one would click on a topic called What The Hell, but it didn't go right. :(

So take it as a lesson to make your thread titles as controversial as possible regardless of what its actualy about. :P

Since the teen grid is only going to be open 8pm to 6am GMT, I'm guessing LL don't want international teens, only home grown ones. Very short tighted I would have thought.

Is this really the only explanation?

Is it possible LL wants, while this is in the experimental phase, to be able to respond with customer service very quickly? Considering only 3 Lindens are dedicated to it and they are all domestic? That they cannot afford to provide 24 hour support on an experimental venture? Yes/no?

There was a first time when the "main grid" wasn't open 24/7 either, and crashing at a late hour led to many a cry of "NOOOOOO! I WANT BACK INTO SECOND LIFE!"

I don't remember this because I wasn't there, but these are the tales I have heard from many a seasoned veteran of the gridverse.

Expansion, progress...

The grid wasn't specifically shut down, loggins were denied. So the trick was to get online before "close" and try not to crash else you couldn't get back in untill the next day.

^ Ah, thanks for the clarification, Surina. I'd imagine in the future the Teen Grid will hit their first 100 sims and go "WOWEE!" while we hit 1000. What a world.

How about laying bets on the maximun size of the teen grid? After all, the main grid will continue to grow as more users join, but the number of teen grid users should theoretically "top out" as the rate of 18yo leavers equals the join rate...

I'm going for 175 sims. (no theory here, just a guess)

I'd guess less...80 - 100 sims.... I don't think they will buy land like we do.

20 at first, 50 a little bit further, then 150 sims for a while, then more!

S'alright. They'll just get a letter like:

Dear Paedo,

We noticed that your creepy ass was in the teen grid, and we know full well you're an adult. Why not come join us in the real SL! There are plenty of other pervy fucks for you to get your kicks with there, and every fetish and perversion you can imagine (yes, including kiddy sex)! You'll feel right at home, we guarantee it!

Philip Linden: "we are not in the game business."

So the kiddie grid is what then? child labor?

I find the irony of all this hysterical. ;)

What does the US government do with minors that are earning a living wage from a video game and not paying taxes?

Do kids who do stuff like paper routes or mow lawns, or whatever the hell jobs kids do these days (sadly I'd say "pimping" too), get taxed on those?

I only had one job when I was under 18 and I was paid "under the table", so I figure other kids would do the same no?

It'll be fun if the kids start earning more than their parents. :D Sure there are some who already do.

The IRS won't care if a kid makes a little money ingame.

From theIRS website :
From: someone
If you are an unmarried dependent, you must file a tax return for 2004 if you have earned income of more than $4,850, unearned income of more than $800, or if your gross income is more than $800 and exceeds your earned income by more than $250.
The amounts for 2005 should be similar.
