From: Rose Karuna Brace, ... I would really appreciate it if you would drop off a copy of your yellowpages to me or tell me where I can pick one up so that I can hand it out to new people. Kudos to you and all the work you put into this!
Thank Rose I forgot to say all that. Brace I'll drop Awakening Avatar Group info on you and please drop a copy of the yellowpages on me also. Thanks

I think this is a wonderful idea Brace!! An organized listing of places and people that are helpful to those new to Second Life will be great! I wish it had been around when I first came in-world. I've sent many a newb to the GNU store myself.
I might suggest, and will probably get flamed for this, that you could add a little etiquette section into it, dealing with NOT selling freebie items, what the difference is between PG and mature sims, when it's ok to shoot someone and when it's not, etc.
That way it makes a nice neat started handbook/guide book for new folk.
I'd also love a copy to give out at PP. We get ALOT of new folks coming through. Are you going to have it in a notecard giver with a nice cover/sign?

From: Loki Pico Brand newbies have L$250 to start. L$1 items will introduce them to a variety of things that can be had in world without breaking their bank. Eventually they will discontinue using cheap newbie freebie stuff and move up to vendors that are selling wares they desire. The L$1 arguement just doesnt hold water, no matter how many times it is brought up.
Introducing specific stores in a newbie help guide at the Welcome Area is a touchy subject though. That is close to bordering on advertising, which is not permitted down there. My personal policy on this subject (while in the Welcome Area) is to be generic as possible. Instead of telling people where to go, I explain how to use FIND to locate things of interest. The only place I suggest by name is the Ivory Tower Library, which only offers instruction and has nothing for sale.
I will recommend places of personal preferences to new people in IM, if they ask in IM. Right on Loki, I think this is the best way and it's how I am with newbies, seams to workout well for me.

I think everyone is in agreement the Brace started this thread with the best of intentions, no matter what your view is on the side issues. Before Brace's post gets deficated on further, and goes more off-track... Could we keep the discussion regarding "Freebies" to this thread, where it belongs?: /120/29/41859/1.html The discussion here is moving into the personal & unproductive.

From: Kris Ritter --- Btw, WHY hasn't anyone started a thread called 'SL must move beyond the Prokofy and Blaze mindset?'. I'm genuinely disappointed Excellent! idea Kris. Thanks for the inspiration! SL Must Move Beyond the Prokofy and Blaze Mindset

Yay Brace! I was going to name drop you in Schwan's thread, but decided I'd better leave it up to you, given the spirited debate some threads seem to attract. You have such a nice setup already going, and I was glad to contribute what I could in the way of freebees. I've also distributed the welcome folder to three new people last night alone in the sandboxes - the notecards on how to do stuff are very helpful And the Money Tree locations are a godsend when someone comes up and says "Can I borrow $?" David's idea on an ettiquette section is a good one. I've had a number of new people start shooting at or around me, only because they don't realize that its not "polite". A 2 second conversation with them saves filing an abuse report most of the time. Also, if you want a nice notecard giver thingie set up, just ask and I can whip one out tonight.

From: Eggy Lippmann Yeah, what he said. I don't know what's with you people. We don't have a lending feature like they do in There, so how the hell are noobies supposed to dip their toe in the great content SL has to offer without instantly investing a wad of RL money into GOM and such? Stop whining about how there should be something utterly amazing to make them wanna come back and keep coming back. Be constructive. Go make it, or hire people to do it for you. Agreed. They need to put their money where their mouth is, maybe then they'd seem more than hypocrites. Anyway... great idea Brace! I'm working on a set of new player clothing for men and women. The women's set is already on location at The Shelter, but I'd be happy to hand one off to you if you wish to include it. Just let me know.

Thanks guys!! I really wish I knew how to do those multiple person quote things. I don't read or post that often here, and just when I was getting the hang of how things worked, they changed the format on me - I've been lost ever since rofl. Yes please DO drop me the notecard(s) as laid out in my first post - I am also going to be contacting folks myself, as I am well aware that the majority of residents do not read the forums. I would like to have as many listings as possible before creating the first version of the Directory. I am also looking into using an automatic updater type thing like SecondLIFE Magazine. Sooo....I plan to use this week to gather listings, so please refer anyone you think qualifies (please see my original post). Thank you Rose: That's exactly the kind of information needed for this The more listings the merrier, and less chance of things falling through the cracks. I'll have more of a "deadline" for getting listings in by the first "printing" towards the end of the week. Azazel I'll talk to you about the notecard giver - I've been juggling a few ideas hopefully trying to keep it 1 prim, but certainly no more than 5. I have some examples, so we can brainstorm Again thanks guys for your supportive comments and for doing thread traffic control OH and David ty for the handbook/guide suggestion - I can make a section for that no problem, good looking out

From: Brace Coral Helping All Newcomers Directory ~ A SecondLife "yellow pages" for NoobiesIf you have a service that is specifically for helping out Noobies I have created a Directory of sorts that will help consolidate everything, and make for easier access for everyone. The following is a preliminary list of the kinds of services that I'm looking for. Any additions, suggestions, and constructive critizisms are welcome. If you have a freebie and/or one dollar store. If you have a venue thats dedicated to helping, supporting, welcoming and educating new folks.I am also going to be listing individuals.Examples: *If you teach SL Basics classes (Building, Scripting, Texturing, Inventory, UI etc) on a regular basis. *If you hold Q&A sessions, noobie show & tells, new designer fashion shows etc on a regular basis. (By regular basis I mean at LEAST once a week every week if not more). *If you are the founder of a group that helps, educates and supports and/or has services for new people This is how you get listed in this Directory:*Drop me a notecard to my inventory titled: HAND Listing <your full name here> *Information for the body of the notecard should include the name of your venue, a brief (1-5 sentences) description of what your service has to offer for Noobies. *Include a landmark to your venue location *In the case of an individual listing, include the subjects of your class(es)/event(s), and the days and times that you regulary hold them along with the brief description. *If you are a group founder please list the name of your group, the charter, and up to three other contacts (full names) from the group besides yourself. Optional but encouraged: A logo texture that represents your service (copy/mod). If you know of someone who qualifies for this directory and who doesn't read the forums, please have them IM me inworld and I'll give them the information they need Updates & Info:Thanks for all the listings! Getting this first copy out has been a fun and interesting journey. I am getting close to completion: I am learning all about the ins and outs of notecard servers and will have something all set up very soon. I have also made a list of those who expressed here and in IM that they wanted to have the Directory kiosk made available to them apon completion. The kiosk (Directory dispensor) itself is one prim featuring the snazzy logo and an easy to read Click Here message. Please post here or even better IM inworld if you would like one for your venue. Deadlines: Nothing firm yet, but its best to get your listings in to me before the first full weekend in May (7th-8th) for inclusion in the first official "printing". Things I need help with: Testing the kiosks/servers at 2-3 locations. Networking outside of these forums - referalls are great! I don't want to miss anyone. Fleshing out the SLetiquette section (Thanks David!) Special thanks to Travis for his enthusiasm and support

From: blaze Spinnaker Chip has stated that people get this mentality that they don't have to pay for things. I believe it is places like the 1$ store that create that mentality. Well since you're calling me out here I have to say that I disagree with your premise, Blaze. It isn't dollar stores or freebies that train people to expect access to everything in exchange for their one time $9.95, it's games like TSO, WoW, and every other "skinner box" style game economy. I have nothing but praise to offer for people who go out of their way to welcome new users with help and generosity. I simply disagree with the "money is ruining SL" crowd AND the "free items are ruining SL" crowd

HUGGS Stone Your enthusiasm helps to keep me going! I'm now posting updates and condensed info on what I need from the folks who want to get listed. There's no reason why every single noobie helper group, service, venue and organization or individual can't be listed here. This is an inclusionary service not an exclusionary one Feel free to refer people to the thread below, they may IM me inworld or PM me here on the forums and I take listing submissions any and all the time. The Directory is then updated within hours once I've checked out the listing etc. Please see THIS THREAD HERE in the Servics area of the forums for current updates. You may also recieve the one-prim copiable Directory kiosk/dispensor for your land directly from me. Just leave me an IM inworld and you'll get one asap. As of 5/23/05 we have had 550 copies given out & 17 locations - less than a month since the first kiosk was rezzed inworld! HUGGS to Charissa!! Its been wonderful getting to know you and you are so very welcome to Second Life!

Definitely needed--SL Glossary
05-25-2005 21:53
Hi, I was in Bob Bunderfeld's Q&A for Newbies today and someone there had a good idea--just a basic glossary of terms that are common in SL ("Prim", "Sim", Land Barron, Newbie, etc.) Half of what Bob was saying was going over our heads. The common vernacular might be easy for oldies to understand, but it took me days to figure out what a prim was, and I probably could have figured it out if I'd taken time to read, read, read, and read...but I didn't.I jumped right in. I don't know how it could be delivered to newbies? (I skipped over reading the whole text of every single notecard I received when I first got into SL, so maybe notecards aren't exactly the most effective method of delivery?) Maybe you could have pop up descriptions of things in the welcome area (This fountain is made of 400 Prims--primitive shapes linked together) or something like that? I also like getting the freebies from vendors because I am more likely to buy something from that vendor later, or right then...or even just spend some time in their store so they can get credit for dwell (is that the right term? Another one for the Newbie Glossary!)
Just a suggestion. Great idea Blaze.
P.S. the glossary idea came from Mulch Ennui, btw. All credit to Mulch, and please help him if you meet him--aqua colored skin, lime green long Mohawk hair, lol.

Welcome to SL Sansarya (and beautiful name too!) The Noobie Glossary is an excellent idea ~ I hope I can hook up with interested folks to help put a really good one together for new residents. I'll add that to the list of must-haves for the helping HAND directory - thank you!

I like the list of development tools - especially for animations, from what I've read there's a lot of animation programs out there but only 1 works with creating files to export to SL. <--not an animator YadNi has a Radio Phone Book list of URLs that were compiled at some point in the past available at the junkyard (ALL HAIL THE JUNKYARD), but the problem with compilations of radio URLs is they can (and do) change often. I'd say about half of the URLs on the copy that I got no longer work. Probably keeping a list like that current is a pain in the hoo-ha.
