Skinhead O'Connor is a freaking nutjob.
Her life can be summed up as achieving brief popularity through a cover song, then engaging in frivolous publicity stunts that have done her more harm than good.

I thought Sinead O'Conner's career had died first, and the Pope had had his laugh.

Who's going to laugh when Sinead O'Connor dies?

I gave you more credit than that, Ulrika. That was just pointless and tasteless.

She is recording reggae covers now. She is going to butcher Bob Marley and Peter Tosh songs and get paid. Joy.

I received a PM from a relative youngster who didn't understand the reference, so I thought I'd provide the back story.

On 3 October 1992 Sinead O'Connor appeared as the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live." Toward the end of the show O'Connor performed a remarkable a capella version of the Bob Marley song "War," which Marley wrote using words from a speech given by Ethiopia's last emperor, Haile Selassie, who died in 1975. The song basically says war is an appropriate response for victims of racial injustice, child abuse and other types of cruelty. At the song's conclusion O'Connor held up an 8" x 10" color photo of Pope John Paul II, ripped it into pieces and said, "Fight the real enemy.

Wow, that's pretty damn tasteless. To me the pope was just another human being, but that's just rude. (I mean the original poster, not the ripping of a photo).

I don't have a problem with tearing up a photo of a celebrity to represent a statement, after all the Irish have made a lifestyle out of hating the 'other side' of Christianity. What makes me utterly sick, completely utterly puke my mental guts out is what I saw on tv this morning, an exclusive look at the pope's stuff, here's his dead body on a slab (with someone sprinkling holy water on him of course, must respect the dead body even though the living body spent a lifetime saying the soul was the most important thing).

...and then the pope's garage! thrill to the popes classic 20 yr old yet very cherry Mercades! you've never seen this cool car before now, wow it's really cool, and his house is excellent! it was an MTV Cribs show for old materialistic people. and then, here's his good friend mr. Political Ambulance-Chaser, "sure, I advocated dropping bombs on children, but the Pope was a close person friend of mine, blah blah blah"...

utterly missing the point, and far more disrespectfull than ripping up a photograph.

why was the pope important? is it because he was famous? rich?.....

Ulrika,

I have to agree - this is tasteless and disappointing, to say the least.

Unfortunately, I am unaffected by shame which is used as a tool for social and religious conformity. If I were, I would have never posted such a deliciously irreverent thread in the first place.

Have a sense of humor and enjoy the memories! He would have wanted you to have a smile on your face instead of anger in your heart. (By "he" I'm referring to Lorne Michaels.)

Yes, as your past threads have shown, you have no regard whatsoever for your inflammatory remarks. I am not offended by your remarks on any religious grounds - I am offended just because they are insensitive on a human level. It is something I have always found incongruous with the rest of your personality. Lack of common decency, decorum, and sensitivity are not things you should be unaffected by, but you have proven time and again that you are, while couching it under whatever guise suits you on that particular issue.

Sometimes, no matter the circumstance or belief held, not saying anything at all is a better course, but one you seem to rarely take. Not everything is a political issue, though you always try to make it one ("tool for social and religious conformity";) as an excuse for your rudeness. This is simply about your ego above all else.

Wow. You really unloaded on me.

This was just your standard irreverent post-mortem joke. They are considered by psychologists as part of the natural healing process and are as old as mankind itself.

On SNL, they declared the founder of McDonalds, Ray Croc, "McDead" at a 82. When the space shuttle crashed, folks made "need another seven astronauts" (NASA) jokes. My particular joke was inspired by a tag line from the Onion which read, "Siskel dies. Ebert declared victorious."

Please have a change of heart and lead the pitchfork-and-torch-wielding masses away from my laboratory. Thanks.

It's rumored that Ulrika is actually Sinead O'Connor herself.

But, yeah, it was a stupid thread!

But hey, that's the great thing about SecondLife. We make mistakes, we move on!

There are no pitchfork and torch wielding masses, hyperbole much?. Instead of overexplaining yourself, just stop for a moment and have an ounce of sensitivity Ulrika. Humility has never suited you well, but you might want to try it. You can explain away your actions all you want - I especially like the "but waaah other people do it!" argument, always a winner. Yes, there were 9/11 jokes, tsunami jokes, Princess Di jokes, Columbine jokes, even beheading jokes, all of which I am sure made someone laugh so they must be appropriate, eh?. Just own up to the fact that it was in poor taste and insensitive instead of trying to always win on some academic point.

Ulrika I can assure you Cris did not actually unload on you.

I've seen him do it re: bye gone issues, and beleive me, you'd know it if he had.

:)

Who'd be laughing last if Sinead has had a change of heart re: the pope?

Thank you, Cristiano :) It seems like these days one would be hard pressed to find people with a little impulse control and common courtesy. Looks like taste and tact have bought a one way ticket on the last train out of town...

Of course it was insensitive and in poor taste! That's the whole point of a post-mortem joke.

I hope that satisfies your criteria for capitulation, as I have no remorse in executing what I set out to from the very beginning -- an admittedly insensitive post about the pope's death which was in poor taste.

Clear? (Please say yes because I have another one.) :D
