Magnum, I really don't think you understand ratings. They are not intended to be used as greeting cards or smiley face stamps. I get the idea that this sort of misuse, no matter how well intentioned it may be, is part of the reason for the changes.
In fact, I'd recommend that you create a little happy joy lucky greeting card object that tells people they're the tops, and might even do something a little useful, like provide some basic tips on how to find a sim (use the map dropdown and teleport) or whatever. Giving them out free to noobs would have a much more lasting effect than just throwing a rating at them and would teach them how to trade objects (they'd have to accept it and then find it in inventory), how to attach or rez it, how to inspect the inventory of that object, and so on. Even a player that does next to nothing in the game needs to know that.
If you can't build it, post that fact here, drop the pic you'd like to use on my profile in game, and I'll build it for you.

From: Magnum Serpentine I just want you to know that I receaved 3,300 positive ratings (Total for all three groups) and have given 9,082 Positive ratings. I think this shows I was rating people so that they would have a good first impression of Second Life. I think it shows that you were gaming the ratings system. When I want to give people a good first impression, I hand them a copy of Loki's Newbie Notes, Kex's Lag Guide, and answer any of their questions. I might also mention some cool things to go look at. But hey, I'm a feted inner content baron.

In agreement

Tcoz, excellent post.
i happen to agree it's an exciting step in the right direction. SL is an ever-evolving world: -first SL was created (SL as a newborn) -then Beta tested (SL as a baby) -then SL was released to the general populace (SL as a toddler) -since then, we've learned how to do things on our own (SL learning to stand) -now we've evolved again and we're being taught how to walk
we have a long way to go and if all goes right, we'll always have somewhere new to go. the recent changes in payouts and ratings costs may seem like a bad idea at first, but i agree.. it should even out and encourage growth and creativity.
if we're lucky, SL will reflect the intense society we had been building a year ago. there are many who would do all they can to help, many who believe in what SL can be.
this is NOT a game.. it does not fall under the description of a game, nor should it be run like one.
SL is what i refer to as "an alternate reality/world" and it's times like these that i see that description shine through just a bit more.
