Interesting post.

I don't own a home. Or any structure for that matter.
I own a nice chunk of land in Natoma, right on a 'shore line'.

I use the land for screwing around with scripting (for some reason I don't enjoy hanging out and building in Olive..)

As for constructing/furnishing a house, im just not into yet. Maybe when i get bored doing everything else ill work on that.

Plus, i dont have enough money to build anything nice.

1. No. But, I have in the past. My own builds.

4. I been spending more time in Lindenworld lately. I think I am a true explorer, love seeing the world close up and how it changes from day to day. I got no place you will find me more often than others except for Luna or The Welcome Area / Stage 4.

6. Socializer, recreational builder.

7. My past house type dwellings were built out of peer pressure. No one exactly telling me to build, but pressure to have an answer to the question, "where is your house?" And pressure to show that I can actually build something.

8. Only permanant structures I have in world is the Teal Water Tower and Teal Underwater Maze. They are not tax burdens.

9. You dont have to have a house. But, some sort of land ownership and build of any nature seems to give you a sense of identity and belonging. Does that make sense?

1. Yes, I have a place in Stillman

2. It was self constructed - but it already needs a remodel!

3. Hang out, have people over, play around with new builds.

4. I spend most of my time on the project du jour (in this case Cyrus Apollo's place -or- Jay Silverman's place). But, I try to get out to the Welcome area/Stage 4 often.

5. Yes.
5a. I use it sometimes.

6. I'm a Builder/Secret Socialite/Wanna-be Scripter

7. I like the creativity involved in building.

8. Yes. It's too darned high. I agree w/ taxes, but how about lowering them a little?

9. I'm not addicted.. I'm not. Really.

1) Do you own a house in SL?

Yes I have a house in the building process with my partner in crime Cailyn, we also have a stage (which is were i spend most of my time)

2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?

Self constructed

3) What do you do there?

Nothing. I have had several houses and ended up deleting them as i dont see the point in them when they are finished. Its not like i have any "housing needs" or anything lol

4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?

Events that i am holding and building at my place

5) Do you have furnature in your home?
Not yet
5a) Do you use it?

6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?
Builder and partly socializer

7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?

The fun and the challenge

8) Are you strugling tax wise becuase of owning a home?

Not really
land tax is my killer ;)

9) Place any other comments you have here.

1) yup

2)all me

3)hide

4)Nexus Prime, but mostly because thats where all my other stuff is,

5)Yep, best couch in SL

5a) Thats a loaded question, I sit on the couch occasionally

6) Not much of any of the 3. I just like to use lots of bandwidth, and SL is good for that.

7) Well, lusk court had been sitting there for months without a single building - someone had to build a house there.

8) Nope, its the owning 1/16th a sim that gets me. Oh, and height taxes... BOOOOO

9) It also is one of the slowest houses in SL., I think I'm building at something like 2 prims per week.

Yes. Actually 2 homes if you count an "Undisclosed Location" in DeHaro.

Its an original design.

Its my starting point in world. Whenever I log in, that is where I appear.

I tend to spend most of my time at events, the Welocme area, or (as of this month) Luna.

The house is sparsley furnished, and the furnishings get very little use.

Builder/socializer (sort of). Mostly a slacker.

I built the house mostly because I screwed up the textures on the cabin that used to occupy the spot.

My house is somewhat small, so taxes are not a problem.

My house is one of the oldest builds in Clara now. The neighborhood has changed, lag has gone through the roof, but I'm still there in the same location.

I think owning a home is kinda useless, but I see why it's fun to build (to show off). I think lindenworld is great because you can actually do a lot of stuff there. There isn't enough dynamic stuff in SL. Most of the land is covered with houses and what not... nice to look at but... ehm...yeah... ehm... you get my point???
What I would like to see more is buildings for events, events are great! The sports SIM is cool but I don't know if it's used much (never looked) we should look at events that attract a lot of people and make specialized buildings for that (and I'm talking big building, with roof and all) that would add to the activity and usefullness of Second Life.

1. Yep. I have a house in Freelon that's been there since beta,

2. self-constructed and still evolving

3. When I'm at my house I'm usually either working on something or IM'ing

4. I spend about half my time at my house and the other half attending events, visiting friends, exploring.

5. I do have furniture in my house... some chairs upstairs and tables and stools down in the bar. I use them when people are hanging out at my house with me and almost never when I'm there by myself.

6. I'm a builder, clothier, and more of a hermit than a socializer... but I do like to socialize.

7. I decided to build a house so I could have someplace to call my own. It's a comfort thing. You can't be a hermit without a hermit hole now can you?

8. Taxes.... struggling, no... paying over 10k a week, yep (yikes)

9. comments - I think having a home and maintaining a permanent build in SL makes me feel like more a part of the world.

1) Yep, my cave in Darkwood.

2) All me, inspired by Soren Romulus though.

3) Mostly test build, hence the first floor look of a forge. Inspiration begins with your surroundings.

4) My place, or my wife Raelynn's, place in Mocha.

5) Yep...and yes, I use it. Sometimes it's kinda fun to sit around at the table with a mug in one hand, a tun of beer behind you, manipulating a set of prims into something fantastic with your other hand.

6) Builder for the most part. I do socialize from time to time between ideas. Soon though, my Love Boat will need to be scripted, and then I will work on Scripting.

7) To see if I could. As a personal challenge, and to practice my building skills.

8) Yes and no...my stipend covers most everything I have so far, but I can't expand much more...sigh...

9) It really does help give you a sense of identity, of accomplishment (for those who built their own) and it reinforces the whole "second life" aspect of Second Life. After all, there are a lot of people who dream of owning a home, and in SL, not only can you own a home, you can create it from the ground up as fantastically as your means allow -- which can be considerable.

1. I've owned two so far, but tore them down for various reasons. I currently have a small office in Rose.

2. Self constructed.

3. I post pictures of previous builds I've done, and talk business about contracting my work out.

4. I spend my time building :)

5. I have couches, tables, a desk, and an office chair. Define use. :)

6. Builder.

7. That's 60% of the reason I bought SL.. to make my own things.

8. Nope.

9. Sometimes, a fish is just a fish.

9: I hold this whole theory about "Second Life equivalents" to first life things. So the SL equivalent to a home is just a plot of land. A place you can hide away and do whatever you want at. Thus, no real home is required. I'm minimalistic I guess ;)

1) Do you own a house in SL?

Not a house, no. As in a modern dwelling. Never have. Just work on various projects all over the world.

2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?

All my stuff I made myself. Otherwise...where's the fun? :)

3) What do you do there?

Build stuff, tear it down, build new stuff. Then I have my store, which is my business that I don't spend time at.

4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?

Building in Darkwood, or with Rathe on various hairbrained schemes. At Stage 4, or just seeing what's new in Lindenworld cuz it's next door. If I'm logged on, chances are I'm workin' on something.

5) Do you have furniture in your home?

Nope. No...structure that looks like a house that would have furniture. Oh wait, I do, in Darkwood Village. But that's a showpiece and I haven't even been inside it in a dog's age.

5a) Do you use it?

See last question.

6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?

A mediocre builder and texture maker. Socializer within a small group of people or at events.

7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?

N/A

8) Are you struggling tax wise because of owning a home?

Struggling with the tax of owning a big chunk of Darkwood. :)

9) Place any other comments you have here.

I never personally saw the appeal of re-creating a modern house unless you're really into architecture. I love SL for our ability to create the unreal, or the grand. Don't get me wrong, I love looking through people's detailed houses, but have never had the 'nesting instinct' to actually build a structure I call home that looks like a RL house.

1) Do you own a house in SL?
Part own (see Matina's answer!) :)

2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?
Self-constructed

3) What do you do there?
erm.. build? It's not finished yet. And chat - lots of people stop to chat while I'm working on it.

4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?
My home/welcome area

5) Do you have furnature in your home?
Nope, but I like to build furniture

6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?
um... depends on my mood/weather/solar flares/lag/whatever... all three really.

7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?
Just for the challenge really. This is my fourth or fifth home so far, I build the structure, get bored, then tear it down and build something else. I've been quite happy with an empty plot of land before.

8) Are you strugling tax wise becuase of owning a home?
No. (not yet anyway, I can see it looming)

9) Place any other comments you have here.

1) Do you own a house in SL?

I'm on my third house now. 1st cost too much tax, someone bought my second house, so I tore it down and am now on #3!

2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?

All made by my own (er..AV's) hands. So far all have been fantastical rather than an analogy of real-world architecture.

3) What do you do there?

Build, script, chat with friends.

4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?

About 80% of my time is spent building and chatting at home, 20% socalising elsewhere and attending events.

5) Do you have furnature in your home?

Yes - I always build seats in my builds if applicable.

5a) Do you use it?

People that know me usualy know that if I sit down, I'm happy to chat for a while, but if I'm standing up/hovering I'm probably gonna be tinkering with things while I chat.
Other than that I'm kinda minimal on furniture, and prefer interesting toys and things to clutter my abode.
However, I have just built a bed in my latest house... just to give it that 'lived in' look :)

6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?

In order of competance: Builder, socialiser, scripter.

7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?

Makes me feel grounded in SL. Shows off my building skills. Somewhere for me to work (if I'm busy building, I make the windows opaque and shut the door). Somewhere to sit and chat with friends when they drop by. Also it's somewhere to log in to.

8) Are you strugling tax wise becuase of owning a home?

Not since I sold my second house, no. :)
Plus I'm less prim-heavy nowadays.

9) Place any other comments you have here.

Building your own home from scratch is a great way to learn the building system, and to aquaint yourself with the tax system. It's also groovy fun :)

--1) Do you own a house in SL?
I used to have a house in Slate that you built, Gwyd. Now I have a shop-in-progress in Tan.

--2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?
Lordfly built it for me for a fee.

--3) What do you do there?
I need a place I can go when I want to check clothes that I'm working on. I also spend time socializing there, and I put up RL pics of my family, projects I'm working on or whatever. I hope to host events there in the near future, as well.

--4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?
I'd say it would be about 40% at my place, about 20% at events/shops/other peoples' builds and lately about 40% out at Lindenworld (mostly playing with Ezhar's new Senso game, which is addictive). Sometimes I'm at my own place more often because I find that a crowd of people will suddenly show up and start chatting (hi, Mikey).

--5) Do you have furnature in your home?
A few pieces on the "landing deck" to make people feel at home and to sort of give a clue about what it's for. I doubt there will be much furniture in the whole structure, other than a few chairs/couches/plants/rugs/etc. to make it look nicer, since it will eventually be a shop.

--5a) Do you use it?
Occasionally.

--6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?
I'm a socializer who makes and sells clothes.

--7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?
Gwyd, you built the house that was in Slate mostly as someplace to get away from the hustle and bustle of Little Tokyo (which has been so dead lately it makes me want to cry). Now, the primary reasons for me to have a place are: 1) place to check clothes/socialize and 2) sell stuff.

--8) Are you strugling tax wise becuase of owning a home?
Goodness gracious, no, I get a very robust stipend.

--9) Place any other comments you have here.
I have come to the conclusion that I don't need a "house" in SL. I'm not saying that no one needs a house, but it's the way that I feel. I do like to have a place to spawn every day since I try to always return there before logging off, and I do need somewhere I can go to check my clothing in progress and eventually sell stuff. But I don't need two bathrooms, a kitchen and a refrigerator. Again, this is just my personal preference.

>1) Do you own a house in SL?
I own the land under the SL Disco, but the building itself is owned by Disco Linden, to help with taxes.

>2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?

Hehe, I wish I could make those prefabs disappear. I built it myself of course. The lion thingy was made by Bonecrusher Slate. All casino machines or product boxes in the mall are the responsibilty of their creators and owners and I dont make a single dollar off of them.

>3) What do you do there?
Worry about people not using it much! Please feel free to hold events at the disco - just use the Event Calendar, no need to talk to me. Thats why the Lindens made one in Da Boom and that is why I rebuilt it in Blue. Consider it a party version of Stage 4 or something.

>4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?

I used to be there 100% of the time but nowadays I spend most of my time in SL helping people out. When I log on I already have 3 different people who sent me offline messages wondering if i could help them make this object or script or something! :D

>5) Do you have furnature in your home?
Oh dear, way too much of it. I need to ask someone to go and derez it if i cant get into SL soon.

>5a) Do you use it?
Not much, I play with the mixmaster once in a while but its really meant for other people to use at events and such.

>6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?
All of the above. The one thing in SL I'm not very good at is Texturing.

>7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?
The lindens wanted someone to run the disco. I applied. I won.

>8) Are you strugling tax wise becuase of owning a home?
Nah.

1) Do you own a house in SL?
Yes.

2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?
It's self constructed. And then self-destructed. And then self-reconstructed... ad nauseum.

3) What do you do there?
I build things, I chat with other people who are also wroking on other projects in different places, I sometimes have people over, I dance barefoot on the roof when I am bored.

4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?
I spent about equal time at my home, my business, and events.

5) Do you have furnature in your home?
Yes.

5a) Do you use it?
Some of it yes, some of it no. For instance, the kitchen sink is really just for show! But the swing on the upper piazza gets a fair amount of use.

6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?
SHOPPER/Builder/Socializer - we forget that all important SHOPPER category too often! I like to reward great work when I see it by buying it up, even if in the end I just keep it in my inventory for now.

7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?
I wanted to join the Slate community because I liked what was being done there - the home owners association, that kind of thing. Go Bob!

8) Are you strugling tax wise becuase of owning a home?
No.

1) Do you own a house in SL?

Yes

2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?

Self Constructed (when I had minimal building skills so not perfect)

3) What do you do there?

I hang around outside in my yard working on things

4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?

I'm usually hanging around at home unless there's an event or I'm out wandering. Sometimes I pop in just for events though.

Re: Why do you own a house in SL?
10-16-2003 13:14
I figure I should pony up and give answers to my own quiz so...

1) Do you own a house in SL?

Yes - I own the Little Tokyo marketplace in Sage. Eventualy to be sold to new managment so I can follow other persuits. In the near future I plan to have a large labratory & a mobile labratory so that I can work on whatever projects and have the tools that I or others have created at hand and the space to do it in.

2) Is it prefab (or prefab based), self constructed, or contracted?

Everything I do is self constructed. Its what i do.

3) What do you do there?

In the marketplace: Sell things
In the lab to be: Create... anything :D

4) Do you spend more time: At your home, At other people's homes, at events, at sites such as Nexus Prime, Americana?

70% at the lab/market, 30% at events or visiting others.

5) Do you have furnature in your home?
Marketplace: Yes
Lab: Yes but extreamly simple and utilitarian only

5a) Do you use it?

M: Not realy, it holds merchandice.
L: I sit on a cube ;)

6) Do you consider yourself: A Builder, A Scripter or a Socializer?

Builder who whishes he could script :D

7) If you answered in the positive to #1 why / what made you decide to build a home?
M: To help out with the creation of Little Tokyo and give us a central location to sell things.
L: To create in.

8) Are you strugling tax wise becuase of owning a home?
