I find it funny that in hindsight, such a big deal was made in Snow Crash about minivans, aka "bimbo boxes". Even Neal Stephenson didn't foresee the vehicular terror of the SUV, a decade and some later.

The Simpsons episode about the "Canyonero" is one of my faves too. :)

Can you name the truck with four wheel drive,
Smells like a steak, and seats thirty five?
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Well, it goes real slow with the hammer down
It's the country-fried truck endorsed by a clown
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Hey, hey!
Twelve yards long, two lanes wide,
Sixty five tons of American pride!
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Top of the line in utility sports,
Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts!
Canyonero! Canyonero!
She blinds everybody with her super high beams
She's a squirrel-squashin', deer-smackin' drivin' machine
Canyonero! Canyonero! Canyonero!
Whoa, Canyonero! Whoa!

The higher emissions part is patently false. Due to united states regulations requiring every car to have emission controls equiped the emissions from a properly tuned SUV are no more than that of any other car on the road.

Hmm... I'd be interested to read more about that. I know that Tier 1 standards (phased in between 1994-97) light trucks over 3750lbs were allowed a higher rate of pollutants than all cars and any light trucks that fall under the 3750lb mark. Tier 2 standards began phasing in in 2004 for passenger cars (must be fully inplace by 2007), but for Light Duty Trucks (LDTs) and Medium Duty Passenger Vehicles (MDPVs) do not have to start phasing in until 2008.

The interesting thing about Tier 2 is that it allows for manufacturers to classify each of thier vehicles into one of eight 'certification bins'. These bins have slightly different allowances in pollutants, allowing some vehicles to emit more pollutants than others. However, the manufacturer must meet a fleet average NOx emissions set by the government.

EPA Info on emissions

So, we are closing the gap between autos and SUVs/LDTs, but it won't be closed for a few years.

From: Talen Morgan

Terible driving characteristcs while was true at one time is no longer true for a lot of the SUV's out there.

Most SUVs on the market are built on a standard truck frame. Body on frame construction offers a much less satisfactory driving experience than unibody type construction. Manufacturers have used various electronic aids to help reduce the bad driving dynamics, but only a handful have come to the point that they would match a car. Body roll, low agility, long braking distances are all typical characteristics for SUVs/LDTs with a few notable exceptions.

From: Talen Morgan

BMW's and the like have and always will have a higher profit margine than any other vehicle because people see them as status symbols when they are no more than aluminum and steel like every other car out there....

Quite possible on the dealer-side margin, but not the manufacturer-side. From 1997-2000, Borg-Warner lead the way with the most consistant profitibility along with Porsche and tool-maker Danaher Corp.

Overall the SUV"s and trucks that are manufactured well outperform most passenger cars for safety...just because they sit higher and keep the occupants further from the impact.

I'll have to argue this point as well. Part of safety is the ability to *avoid* an accident. That big SUV is simply not as able to quickly maneuver out of harms way as a car is (barring a few exceptional examples). Second, SUV's are classified by the EPA as light trucks and are not required to meet the same safety standards as autos are. Ratings for SUVs/LDTs from made from the mid-90's to 2004 score on the lower end of the scale for crash test.

SUVs/LDTs are better *when* you're in an accident *and* you are not in danger of a rollover *and* you are going up against a vehicle that is lighter, lower, and smaller.

Muahahahha... that's called getting your groceries home before the ice cream gets anywhere near soft!!

Actually, I'm sort of intrigued by that car and it's twin the 300, as they're based off of the previous generation Mercedes E-class, so I hear they drive very well.

And the Hemi doesn't hurt either. ;)

I like Jeeps... mainly because I like f*cking shit up offroad and going camping.. For me the ideal getaway isn't the KOA site with the screaming kids running around a propane stove... I like to get AWAY --- FAR AWAY..

But for around the town I usually like a lil car.. Mainly so I can see the look on the face of the 4'2 guy driving the Hummer when I unfold out of the drivers seat after he honks his horn one too many times.

Siggy.

Let's just put it this way:

If the roads were prison, that Forester had better not drop the soap near the Magnum. :D

Let's up the ante. There was actually talk of bringing this one to the states a couple of years ago.

Many states now have emission testing there is no seperate test or seperate numbers to meet for trucks. some trucks and cars may put out a little more but its negigible. My truck has to meet or be under the same number a car does in maryland and it always does. Lets talk about mass transit if you really want to talk about the problem...in most states including maryland busses are exempt.

A lot of small SUV's are actually built on mini van frames. It might surprise you that just as many cars as trucks rollover every year. 9 times out of ten its driver error and not the car or truck.

cars don't avoid accidents drivers do ... Thast big SUV can avoid and accident just as a car does or doesn't this is driver experience not the truck. Light trucks are required to meet very serious safety standards the ones they arent required to meet that passenger cars are is because they are different animals and some things just can't measured the same between the two.
From: someone

I was hit by a small car and my break lines were cut...I went through a brick wall at 50 miles an hour and walked away from the accident without a scratch and this was before airbags were mandatory. I was also hit in the left rear on the freeway by a large moving van changing lanes and I didn't rollover. You keep mentioning rollover as if trucks are the only thing that rollover because they sit higher than passenger vehicles....while I agree that short wheel based SUV's do have a higher rate of rollover I would also point out there are far fewer short wheel based SUV's on the road comared to the long wheel based ones.
