This article makes for an interesting read on SUV's in today's society.

One of my favorites:

". . .internal industry market research concluded that S.U.V.s tend to be bought by people who are insecure, vain, self-centered, and self-absorbed, who are frequently nervous about their marriages, and who lack confidence in their driving skills."

I'm still smiling at that one. :)

Or they are bought by people who need them for their specific type of work. Not all SUV's are owned by soccer moms and weekend yuppie dumbasses.

Hey, jsut want to say I own a SUV because of the olding capabilities. Usually its sports cars and trucks that have been raised that are owned by insecure people. But its all cool. You have the right to your opinion.

What if you own a compact and an SUV?
As all of you should know by now, you cannot generalize anybody. People buy SUVs for many different reasons. Some may be insecure or vain or some might just find them useful for moving things or groups of people. I think studies like that are silly because you just can't group people, not everyone will fit. So why bother? You can't interview every single SUV owner either so it's just not accurate.
Everyone can have their own opinion of course.

Just my 2 cents. ;)

Yes that is true also Talen, but unfortunately the majority of ppl who do, are all of the above as Juro listed. For example.....many of my family members drive SUV's for that reason...bc they are trying to prove something by driving an H2 all dubbed out...makes them feel better and more important than others. But that is so far from what kind of ppl they really are. Just a bunch of capitalist pigs who feel by what they drive and what they wear is what makes them better ppl.....PFFT.....jokes on them.

Oh I agree....and it pisses me the fuck off. Ten years ago I could get a truck or a SUV for around 10-12 thousand. Now for something I need I have to pay 25-30 thousand because this is the new choice of soccer moms and guys with small dicks

Gwah, I hate SUVs. Toronto is absolutely full of rush-hour idiots all scrambling to and from work, and it's always one-person-per-gas-guzzling-monster-SUV. Grrrrrr... worst are those morons driving Hummers.

Now, I'm sure they have their uses... but geez...

Touchy touchy touchy.... ;)

People *don't* all fit into one category, but that's why the quote said that they 'tend to be' and not 'are'.

There are a million legit reasons for owning an SUV - but as the article stated, most times, a car or wagon would suffice.

I don't own an SUV for several reasons:

- lack of safety
- bad MPG
- terrible driving characteristics
- high center of gravity
- higher emissions than cars
- highest profit margin of any auto category

But, that's just me. Continue to buy your SUV's.. they help subsidize my car purchase. ;)

No... even though they try to sell it as an SUV, I believe it is still classified as a 'car'. Actually, the tall wagon body style is becoming very popular as an option to SUV's.

It's true to. Marketing specialists are brutal in psychologically profiling buyers. They've also concluded that many people who have kids buy the sleek SUVs to appear single.

I think they're pretty useless myself. Even if you do live in a rough rural area... you're better off with something else that isn't as inefficient and dangerous.

I can say the same thing about people who buy cheap two-doors or sedans and trick them out with big ass speakers in the back. Or that thing they call a spoiler in the rear that looks more like a bench one sits on in the parade. The baby has no milk or diapers but daddy's got a shiny exhaust pipe.

I used to have a small car until I got into an accident. I drive an SUV because my seat's at a level where my eyes aren't being hit constantly by bright headlights. Maybe I'm not as safe as I'd like to be, but at least I can see where I'm going.

Why, oh why do the worst of SUV owners put 20" rims and performance tires on a truck? The stock tires are much better suited for offroad purposes and snow. Those 20" rims (with spinners, even) won't do you a damn bit of good in deep snow.

There is nothing like the pleasure I get from passing these fools in deep snow (spinning their wheels) in my plain jane, cheap Cavalier. 50 grand for 4 wheel drive rendered useless by stupidity. :D

Bah! Bling will get them through the snow, didn't ya know??? :D

Spinners kill me. They add nearly twice the weight to each wheel and serve ZERO purpose other than looks.

Lash, no need to justify why you drive what you drive. Each of us has our reasons for our choice in vehicle. I just thought the article was funny.

And just for the record, small cars are necessarily unsafe. Many small cars are far more safe than the average SUV. ;)

The higher emissions part is patently false. Due to united states regulations requiring every car to have emission controls equiped the emissions from a properly tuned SUV are no more than that of any other car on the road.

Terible driving characteristcs while was true at one time is no longer true for a lot of the SUV's out there.

BMW's and the like have and always will have a higher profit margine than any other vehicle because people see them as status symbols when they are no more than aluminum and steel like every other car out there....

Overall the SUV"s and trucks that are manufactured well outperform most passenger cars for safety...just because they sit higher and keep the occupants further from the impact.

The only time higher center of gravity will be a problem is on trucks or SUV's with a short wheel base. A normal jeep will flip in an instant wheras a dodge ram doesn't have that characteristic... personally I love sitting higher for 2 reasons. #1 with all the asshat drivers out ther acting like its a speedway when you're in your mini cooper and you end up rear ending that semi there will be a closed coffin no doubt....whereas I will most likely survive.

#2 Until you've been at a red light in the summer time next to some hot chick in a jetta who is aiming the air conditioner up her her skirt you'll never get it :D
