Drama is one of those terms that has really been detached from its original sense. When I think of "drama", I too think of actual plays or epic themes, not petty bickering.

It's also overused, when more specific synonyms might be more relevant to the point at hand, like: histrionics, melodrama, strife, etc.

Drama is like a "smurf word" meaning it can be used to describe any given situation, I can't really nail down any one definition for "drama" since it's useage is so varied. Often the more people say NO DRAMA usually means they are more involved with drama... Whatever drama is. However, calling something drama is usually a way to marginalize someone's likes / dislikes or concerns...

I think that as far as drama goes, you can't avoid it, it's like rain. You can get an umberella, but it's still gonna get everything around you wet.

So basically my post says two things -

-Drama is difficult, if not impossible to nail down under a definition, or at least that I can't define it.

-Drama is inevitable, carry a large umberella... Galoshes might not hurt either, at least to protect from bullshit too.

Well drama has a few definitions, two out of the four seem to apply. I dont think we are misusing the term.

drama n
1: a dramatic work intended for performance by actors on a stage; "he wrote several plays but only one was produced on Broadway" [syn: play, dramatic play]
2: an episode that is turbulent or highly emotional [syn: dramatic event]
3: the literary genre of works intended for the theater
4: the quality of being arresting or highly emotional

People create drama so they can mainpulate everyone into looking at them. They try to get their friends to run around trying to solve a huge problem - when the only reason the huge problem exists is as an attention-getter. I think it's related to Munchausen's Syndrome.

I agree. Drama has become one of those expressively mystifying internet terms, kind of an easy shorthand for lots of things, a sort of conceptual "u" or "b4." I like words like histrionics and melodrama. Or hysteria, hullabaloo, and titillation. To me, for example, titillation precisely describes the feeding frenzy that goes on when people sense a conflict and race to it like a pack of piranha. Sort of a "sucking hunger".

The key though to how drama is used in this context is that it is FALSE and INANE. Some things in life really are dramatic. "Drama" is not that.

I've often found that those who are loudest in their denunciations of drama cause it most and like it best. Those who truly don't like it avoid it and don't bother to talk about it.

Hmmm. Maybe I'd better shut up and go away.

Bingo! In my SL lifetime, this has become very clear to me. I'd venture to guess that upwards of 75% of those who actively decry drama are usually drama queens/kings. You know the ones, those you wear the shirts, put or carry no drama signs, have anti-drama rants or rants about individuals in their SL profile, etc. One notable faux drama hater is still, after nearly two years of claiming to hate drama, erecting signs, etc., one of the biggest drama creators in SL. With people like that, I just hope that they either go away (quit) or change. Sometimes they do, a lot of the time they don't, as the person I am referencing above has proven time and again, most recently by disrupting a welcome area repeatedly.

yeh, drama's a giggle sometimes, but damn, it can get outta hand. Best thing to do about the drama queen's? ignore 'em. Up and leave, find a nice, peaceful spot to reflect on your day, do whatever, just ignore 'em.

When I want drama, I watch Cartoon Network.

"Totally Spies" is my current passion. I've had to adjust my work schedule for it.

I recall mentioning an idea about rating posts for drama content so people could choose how much drama they felt like experiencing on any given day, but nobody else seemed taken with the idea and I have to admit I don't really care that much about it either. You can usually tell pretty quickly if a thread is going to drama, and decide if you're in the mood for it at the moment or not. Same for in-world behavior. It's not like there aren't generally plenty of other places to be.

Hehehe. You have to admit, Sandra is funny... :)

I was more or less refering to drama in-world, not here on the forums, that's another animal altogether. :)

Drama as i understand it:
Relationship trouble, stalking  , attention-seeking behaviour, intrigues, getting heated up emotionally, being melodramatic, to sum it up: Borderline behaviour.

I come to SL to relax and have fun so drama would be the very last thing I am looking for here and even if I wasn't committed to an absolute sweetheart bf in RL :), the sheer potential of drama would probably still be a good reason for me to stay clear of SL partnerships. I have seen quite a bit of drama in my time here and on There and most of it had to do with relationships. :(

I believe there are many relationships that work here. But if a relationship does go down the drain, it appears to me that emotional closeness and anonymity (which unless ppl meet in RL will always remain to a certain extent) as a combination tend to bring forward dramatic behaviour.

I could define drama (or drahma, as we 'special' people call it), but frankly I'm mad at you!

Yes, *you*! You know who you are!

And you know why I'm mad!
