What did you do for fun? I have a RL friend that just started playing and after the 3-4 day he is already saying he is bored and that there is nothing to do. He likes WOW =\

I built for fun!
'Course, back then, you started with a couple thousand L$, could pick up a nice chunk of land for next to nothing, Land Barons didnt exist til the following week, and you could use as many prims as you wanted unless your neighbor had built a bookcase. What would I do now as a noob? Dunno. Money roolz. Can't have fun without it. ![]() (should I put a Mole style </sarcasm> at the bottom of every post, btw?) |

i hung out with new friends i made, built stuff, made pitiful clothes, avoided scripting like the plague, went to clubs and fought the lag monster, went to events....... basically everything.
if he's into WOW there may not be any hope of him liking SL. nothing wrong with that there's just no goal to SL and some people like goals. and beating on orcs or whatever. |

His response was but yea you have goals.. to complete quest and to lvl up and get stronger! I hope he doesnt get scared off! |

People who don't have the imagination for SL probably shouldn't even try and make it work. If you need goals in your game - to be told what to do in order to 'win', then I concur that SL is not for you.

I built a (crappy) house. Then my AV. Then I searched for dresses for my AV. Then I build a few stupid things. Then a better house (still am). And a beautiful thermal power station.
I don't see how you can be bored in SL, it looks like IRL ; many things to do. _____________________

I second what Kris said.
I think DarkLife is still around, I forget what sim its in, but he could try that, its basicly an MMORPG inside SL... but its no WoW yet. _____________________

If he likes WOW have him visit DarkLife or SimCast. Both are RPGs in world.

I started last month. I bought some clothes, bought some land, built a building. Building was a lot of fun.
Now what? All I see in the events listing is TRINGO whatever that is. This should be called Tringo Life! Yeah, I also meet and chat with the friends that got me into the game, but I can also do that through Yahoo!. So I think now I will tear down my building and start all over. |

Seriously though, if you like building, try Primtionary or a Building Contest... always good for kicks. _____________________

When I first started I just explored the world. I then bought a little land and decided to build a small, ruined castle. It came out pretty good so I ended up selling the land and buying more. I got right into building mode (gas station, old cars, etc..).
I've always looked for a "game" that allowed the most amount of freedom. The last game I was in was Star Wars Galaxies. It was fun but SL beats it hands down. Simply because I can create whatever I want. That's what SL is to me. Whatever I want to make I can do it. SL is perfect for me, no specific goals, do what you want, etc.. but some people do want a structured game with goals and leveling up and such. Everyone is different in this respect. Your friend may never be able to get into SL. Which is a shame but it isn't for everyone. |

Short answer:
Sorry about the novella, hope it helps. I'd start w/Ivory Tower, Jessie & Abbotts for parachuting. Long answer: In Da Be Gin Ning... Just trying to get my avie looking decent was an all day pursuit ( she was pretty sucky, poor pathetic thing ). I worked my way through the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives and then went out and made horrifically complicatedly high-prim simple buildings. Then I tore them up and made better and better horrifically complicated LESS-high prim simple buildings. I went to clubs (Elite in Federal, a lot, to be honest), some that don't exist anymore and started meeting folks, many of whom I knew from (it's true) There. After I started to get the building thing down a little I started in on horrid new designer "slider" clothes. Then I started in on getting that alpha channel thing licked Then I made textures for EVERYTHING like a rabid (designer?) Then me and my buds had enough money for land and got a lil plot. Built stuff, store and club and "playroom" Retextured it (the club) pretty much once a week for events. Started hosting parties, 3 or more a week, just for fun, hadn't figured out the gettin' paid part yet (club attendance wasn't yet dependant upon $L being handed out, funny thing, if you had good music and a nice mix of attendees, folks showed up and stayed, go figure!) Went exploring, found Heaven & Hell interesting, the Spook House, a Hampster Wheel, a volcano w/a huge Buddha (and Flame-ingo), amazing builds that pissed me off because I should be doing better w/my own. ![]() Did a great variety of other things, such as: shopping (as in 1st life, I look a lot buy a little) parachuting driving vehicles (freekin impossible) Tetris amusment parks visiting w/buds *cough cough* entertainment messed w/particle settings to amuse myself & create lag (I got better about it really) built weird things just because had watermelon gun fights for good clean silly fun, trying to knock each other offline went exploring flew hot air balloons found the joy of jet packs (the horror of too-fast sim border crossings, too) discovered casinos stayed away from casinos (addictive personality here) looked into lsl and realized it's not html no no no no no not for me, but neat to look at sometimes just to think about and go no no no no no not for me ... visited The Black Sun (bow bow bow) wondered why some of my friends didn't like it here because they felt it was "too" goal (building) oriented (one went back to Sim2 of all things! go figure) became further addicted found the forums (uh oh) etc. etc. etc. (as said by Yul Brynner) I wish you and your buddy good luck, but the suggestion to go forth and shoot the %^& outta folks in those certain zones might be the right thing. He'll see the amazing builds and clothes and weapons and might become interested in making some himself or having a hacienda du bloodbath of his own. We all follow our own route, based upon our skills and interests. If it's meant to be...ya know. Might try Spitoonie Island...maybe a game of ice hockey will do him good! (prolly too slow paced, honestly) HOWEVER, you should know, this was the second time I gave SL a try. The first time I only came in a few times for maybe a total of 10 hours and mostly got really frustrated flying into buildings in the dark (I realize now they were rezzing around me). Also, every time I got in-world the sun set and although it was truly gorgous, I again was stuck in the dark, really ticked me off (thank you gamma settings and DeBug Mode!). Oh, and I couldn't find the one person I knew here since I didn't know their SL name. Boo Hoo me. I got really frustrated and left. I came back, months later, during the great Thereian exodus of Spring of 2004, with some buds and had company through the learning process. That helped a lot. We fumbled through all that stuff I listed up above together. Oh, and I did find my bud, finally thanks to my blog (d'oh). YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE YOU GOOB!! ;-D And now all is well in the world (1st/2nd/etc.). _____________________

I think I spent the first 3 days going to events.. all of which had some sort of dancing involved. I thought all people did in SL was dance.
I was directed to the Ivory Tower of Prims and spent an evening there learning how to build. Then I got my first land and spent the next week or 2 building. I also did quite a bit of shopping hehe. Essentially that is what I still do, spend most of my time building and hanging out with my builder friends ![]() I think the best thing someone can do is attend events that will introduce them to people interested in similar things. DarkLife is a lot of fun! Maybe point him to some of the weapons clubs. _____________________

I just HAD to build, so abandoned my free trial and got a tiny chunk of land and built really ugly builds.
I explored some, but the world was much smaller then, and I would go dancing with friends I had made at either The Elite, or Club Midnight, which at that time were the only two active clubs. Oh..hung out with the vamps in Hawthorne alot as well And partied at DaBoom!_____________________

SL is not for everyone. If you are into mouse clicking and leveling then having to turn to inner creativity for entertainment could be boring, or perhaps impossible.
I spent my first few days stuck up against a wall unable to figure out how to move, which was the fault of my old computer, and I still was not bored. Hmm, maybe I should look into leveling...click...click...click. _____________________

I spent my first few days trying to make it out of prelude, since SL crashed like once every 5 minutes.
