I've never used eBay, but my sister has ordered several somewhat obscure things that she was unable to find anywhere else. I guess that's the real beauty of eBay, being able to market very specific items to virtually the world. That's also a huge portion of the appeal of internet and virtual reality: being able to accomplish something/discuss and act out your ideas/interact with others halfway 'round the world, all from the comfort of your own home. I have used Safeway.com for ordering and having groceries delivered; it's not very expensive, and it can be quite nice to have somebody else lug all the bags of stuff into the house. I usually save at least what I spend on a delivery fee by avoiding impulse purchases, anyway. However, it is a real pain in the neck to try to comb through all the listings of items for sale on the site, and figure out what I want and how much of it I need. Shopping is such a visceral activity for me, and it's hard to make the shift from doing it in person to checking boxes on a web site; it often takes me as long to complete an order online as it would to just drive the mile to Safeway and whip through the aisles myself. I would love to try a virtual grocery store where I could do my shopping aisle by aisle using an avatar. I am so conditioned to knowing what's in each aisle in a real store; if I could, say, walk down the virtual baking aisle and automatically know where the virtual flour, sugar and cake mixes were, click on them to select what I wanted, and walk on to the next virtual aisle, I think it would be much faster. Anyway, I'm excited about the $8 million because it will mean LL can hire new people and put more time into developing SL. I'm not terribly worried about eBay "taking over" SL, or whatever. They have their own successful business model and I doubt they'd be mixing things in with SL at this point. But, since Mr. Omidyar is a visionary who helped create an innovative and highly effective model allowing anybody to engage in internet commerce (on eBay), he will most likely be a good person to have on SL's board of directors. I guess we will see.

It's important to use the Forums as a way to exchange opinions about Second Life instead of opinions about individuals.
Please note these guidelines before posting -
Private discussions – the forums are a public area for the Second Life community’s use. Individuals who have a dispute with each other have other channels of communication to discuss their differences – private messaging, IM within Second Life, or chatting within Second Life. Threads that are addressed to a single individual are inappropriate on the forums.
Think before you post – sometimes in the heat of a passionate discussion you may be tempted to say something that on reflection you will regret. If your words do more harm to the community than they might give you pleasure in the short term, reconsider posting.
Flaming, Spamming, Trolling – Flaming (posting a message that is intended to incite anger or directly attack a person or persons), Spamming (multiple posts of the same topic or discussion), and Trolling (a post with an intentionally contrary opinion written with the intent of inciting or getting argumentative opinions) are strongly discouraged. If you think your post might be over-reactive, or that it might fall into one of these definitions, please reconsider posting.

From: Catherine Cotton What part of what I said was negative? Sorry if you took it as being a bad thing. When I have a clear defined opinion and I want to write it all out, I do. I have an opinion just not willing to share just yet Cath Sorry Cat. I'll retract my earlier statement and heed Kris' advice. Sounds like I jumped to the wrong assumption in thinking you were defining this as yet another 'bad' thing for SL.

Hey Cat... I would like to apologize for assuming you meant the worst. I had retracted my earlier comment in another post, but when I was deleting all of my posts, I deleted that one accidentally.
OK.. back to deleting all my stuff.
Have fun in SL kids... see you on the dark side.
