I made the same assumptions about the settings as MJ. Can a Linden weigh in and clarify this for us?

I don't have a problem with them being transferable or resellable as long as it's just the one they own and not a copy. I just want to make sure that if I leave things modifiable so people can adjust lengths and tint colors that they can't also lift the texture and make a new garment with it to circumvent the protections.

Just jumping in with my knowledge of this issue:

First off, yes, in 1.1 you have to go into your clothing boxes, and go to your contents tab. Then right click on each individual item in that outfit and select your preferences. Three preferences that are checked by default are: Allow Next Owner to "COPY", "MODIFY", "TRANSER" item. So if you do not want one or more of these to be allowed, you need to edit all of your clothing that is up for sale. Now...

COPYING:
This is the same in 1.1 as it was before. If you set your clothing to copy, then anyone can take and distribute copies to anyone else.

MODIFYING:
Before version 1.1, if you allowed for clothing to be modified, then it was possible for anyone to save the texture and then modify it. This was done by clicking on the texture button (not the color button), then saving the texture to inventory, then saving the texture to "disk" (this downloaded the texture). I found that I was able to do this with the outfits I bought that had "MODIFY" but not "COPY". I did not take advantage of being able to do so, other than to study for my own learning (I have never taken a design or texture from some one elses clothing and used it make my clothing that I sell). I just know it could be done.

With version 1.1, this option of saving the texture seems to no longer be an option. So clothing makers, it seems that now it is safe to allow Modifying without the worry that your design and texture can be stolen (if anyone has found otherwise, please let us know!)

TRANSFERING:
I tried this with a few friends. This is a great option as it lets people give an item away (as a gift, or for whatever reason) and it takes their ONLY copy away. So this is not a case where they are able to keep one for themselves and give an unlimited number away.

RE-SELLING:
This allows a person to put a price on an object and sell their copy of the object. Once it sells, that person will no longer have the item they bought. This is just like the transfering, only with a price attached. I think someone above described it best when saying that this is like a way for people to clean out their inventory of unwanted items. Its just that this way, they can maybe get their money back, whereas before that was not an option.

Hope this helps, and if anyone tests and finds that I'm wrong on any of these points, please let me know! :)

This does seem to be the case, I couldn't find the save texture to inventory option anywhere. I suppose someone could save to disk and then re-import - is this option available when Modify is allowed?

I went through most of my clothes boxes last night setting permissions. I've changed from selling the boxes containing the clothing to selling the item direct with a vendor script. Object and clothing permissions are now kept when sold via scripts. Otherwise if you sell boxes people can still end up with multiple copies.

I hope that made sense, it's early and I need caffine

One other thing I noticed - the clothing I had out for sale in boxes had the correct creater set (i.e. me :) ) but the same clothes in my inventory had a creater of (no creater). So watch out if you're redoing boxes.

Hmmmm... I thought for sure that they'd fix the boxed object duping bug? You can still drag it out multiple times? I can't play for more than a couple of minutes without having to reboot so I haven't been able to test much of anything.

You got me wanting to double check this, so I found something for sale in a box and tried it out. This is what I found (I think I've found a display bug):

box properties:

for sale: 45
next owner can modify
next owner can resell or giveaway
buyer buys a copy not original

item in box properties (found by editing box and right-clicking on item, selecting properties):

Owner can Modify
Owner can Copy
Owner can Transfer

No other properties set.

When I select buy, the following dialog appears:

Confirm Purchase
Owner: XXXXX
You may buy a copy for L$45
The object will be copied to your inventory
Your buyer permissions will allow:
Modification
No Copying
Resale or Gifting
The inventory will allow:
Modify All
Copy All
Transfer All

(full permissions on item inside? That is different to what it showed originally)

I bought it, this is what I found:

box shows in my inventory as (no copy)
I rezzed the box, properties show I can modify, next owner can modify & resell
I can't copy the box, and when I rez it, it disappears from my inventory.

Properties of the item inside (again, found by right-clicking on the item inside and selecting properties):
hmm... I have full permissions modify, copy and transfer
next owner also has full permissions

I can pull item from box multiple times
[edit - added this bit]
I can right click on each instance of the item and select Take. They all end up in my inventory marked (no copy) (no modify)
[/edit]

The rezzed item says I cannot modify or copy (which I tried to do and failed)
next owner can only resell or giveaway

So it seems that the original box has the correct permissions, the one I received shows incorrect inventory permissions but the rezzed item is correct. Confused yet? :p

Cori and I tried this out last night too, Cailyn. Cori bought something of mine (sold in a box) that had the permissions on the texture set to modify and resell but not copy. Cori found she could give away the item to somebody else once it was taken out of the box, but that the copy disappeared from the contents of the original box once it was given away. This set our minds more at ease.

Ooh, I'll have to try this out. What if she took multiple copies out before giving one away - would all the copies in her inventory disappear too?

Still doesn't help people selling furniture and the like in boxes - sell one chair and you've given away a whole set...

Ok, played a bit more and I'm not convinced yet. I rezzed a few copies of the item from the box, took a couple into my inventory and left some inworld. The box stayed inworld too.

I dropped one of the copies in my inventory onto the calling card of a friend (damn I need some online guinea pigs!). I got a message saying I didn't have copy permission so I'd lose the item, pressed OK and it went. I still had all the others though, and the box still had the original in it.

Do objects and clothes work differently? Haven't got any boxed clothes with permissions set handy to try it out on.
