There was a study or survey or collection of opinions a while back that ranked the Gutenberg Printing Press as the most influential invention of modern time. (or something like that, I cannot find the article)

What do you think?

I have tried hard to think of something that changed the world as drastically as the Gutenberg Press putting information and books into the hands of the masses. The effect on scientific and religious texts alone is amazing.

While it may be a bit early to declare it as important as the printing press, I have to believe that the transistor is going to be up there when its all said and done. What the printing press has done for communication, the transistor has done many orders of magnitude more.

I think with enough time passing, people will look back at Gutenberg's press as facilitating the first social revolution by making knowledge readily available to everyone, and the Internet the second by making publishing readily available to everyone.

What will be the third?

Gonna go with Donnie Darko on this one, "Antiseptics" (soap).

septic system's another good one, albeit not exactly an invention since even animals know not to poop where they eat and walk.

Hmm... harnessing of electricity?

Refrigeration?

Light bulb?

Computers?

I could nominate all of the above and make a reasonable argument for each.

Can't beleave blake actually got one right folks.......... WE are the greatest (as well as the worst) invention this earth has ever witnessed. Without US, all the fantastic inventions listed already above would never have been invented in the first place.......
