I've been attending these "Town Hall" deals since they were held in the old Linden amphitheaters in 2003, and every time, without fail, there is no shortage of people who have to get their two cents in at least once every five minutes. Now, maybe they don't realize the impact this has on the proceedings, or how annoyed a lot of us are by this behavior. So, I'm going to put this as succinctly and unambiguously as possible:

SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to mute a ton of people at the last two town halls just so I would be able to read what Philip was saying without having to pick through endless noise. People I like even! 99% of the stuff being said consisted of either pointless witticisms or comments which, at the end of the day, mean absolutely nothing, other than that they made it harder for everyone else to follow what the speaker was saying. I have been to a number of these, and sometimes it gets so bad that people start neg-rating each other. The Oct. 1 town hall resulted in someone dropping a NOTECARD with a CHATLOG on me, and everyone else present, about how she and some other lady were tearing into each other because one of them would not shut up. I DO NOT LIKE READING CHATLOGS. I DO NOT LIKE SIFTING THROUGH RETARDED BANTER WHEN I'M TRYING TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHOEVER IS SPEAKING.

What does Haney say (usually more than once) at the start of each one of these things?

"Don't chat out, IM your questions to me."
"Don't chat out, IM your questions to me."
"Don't chat out, IM your questions to me."
"Don't chat out, IM your questions to me."
"Don't chat out, IM your questions to me."
"Don't chat out, IM your questions to me."
"Don't chat out, IM your questions to me."

STILL, people CANNOT KEEP THEIR TRAPS SHUT!!!!!! ARRRRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to sit around with your friends and comment about what is being said, here's an idea: Get a repeater and set up a remote! Then you can yak it up to your heart's content, without spoiling the town hall for the local participants, or any of the feeds around the world. (Yes, all that stuff gets transmitted to EVERY REPEATER LOCATION.)

Now, if you feel you need to express something to Philip or Cory or whoever is talking, and the speaker hasn't engaged the audience in a two-way discussion, and Haney isn't able to get your question to the speaker, how about starting a thread here, or sending it to the person's e-mail address, which is usually mentioned five or six times? That is going to have a lot more effect than speaking out of turn.

One thing I appreciated was that people were clapping in order to indicate agreement. That is great. Do more of that.

event etiquette also dictates that we stay still, preferably seated, and remove all scripted attachments including particles producers to help everybody have a decent frame rate.

please

Can I ask once again why LL has never done a streaming audio event since the 1 year anniversary? That was a great way to speak directly to the masses without the repeaters and without interruptions.

SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I endorse this suggestion! If people don't stop wasting time at the main event location, the audience there is going to have to end up being only select invitees or there weill be none at all, and that would be a shame.

Interestingly enough, the most recent Town Hall which took place at 11 AM was quite well-behaved, with insightful banter mixed with commentary interspersed with what Philip was actually saying. It came out in polite droplets as opposed to any rude overpour of textfloodism... and it felt more casual and relaxed than previous Town Halls I'd attended.

Maxx, thanks for showing me your architectural creations again -- I've still got your spork in hand as I journey the metaverse. BTW, what's the origin of "Hey Philip wuts up"? I heard Jade Lily say something like it.

also it would be nice if the repeaters only repeated xxxxxx lindens while a town hall is in session. i don't care if they are broadcasting everyone before or after, but during townhalls, lindens only please.

Huns, this tends to happen at most events.

Huns, this tends to happen at most events.

I have to note here that at the town hall with Cory a couple weeks back, the audience was *extremely* respectful and quiet during Cory's talk and subsequent question-answering session. It was very, very nice.

I listened from Garth and Pituca's island to both last night's and today's town halls with Philip. I found it rather challenging to separate Philip's comments from those made by others at the event during both, especially when adding in the comments made by people in my immediate vicinity. I, too, must echo Huns' sentiments in this thread, unfortunately. I want to hear Philip talk, not someone *cough* request Philip's presence at a birthday party a half-dozen times.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Its one thing if you are at a private location and chatting with friends during the repeater of the town hall. But that on top of mindless chatter is just rude and stupid. Especially when the moderators have requested people to be quiet.

Like I mentioned on the thread from the last town hall, I can't believe how people act around someone so important...

The attachments thing is kind of negated... they had close to 1200 prims in Linden mics sitting at the stage, each with ten or eleven scripts.

The conference system I developed for previous town halls has the capability to only listen to certain people, Lindens only, etc. for the exact reasons I have stated in this thread... if there is any interest I will fire that up for the next town hall, whenever that is.

I'll take one of those the next time you do one. I've used those a couple times in the past and they were great. They look cool too.

I apologize for my contribution to everyone's aggravation.

I remember being somewhat irritated by all the byplay at last night's meeting, which I listened to at home. When I unexpectedly got the chance to attend today's meeting, I flew in resolving not to contribute to a repeat. It seems I forgot myself to some degree.

Again, my apologies to all who were distracted.

When I am in Busy Mode I only see the text that Lindens produce.
Does it work the same if you are listening to the repeater?
If so, it's a good solution.

I endorse what Huns said, and would like to add...

Don't teleport people in when you've been told numerous times not to do so. Don't exchange calling cards when you've been told numerous times not to do so. Don't fly around, go up on stage, fart particles, play sounds, rez objects or do things to otherwise try and get as much attention as possible. The event isn't about you. No one is there to see you. No one will be impressed with how witty you are. They'll be annoyed that you're being an spastic asshat when they've gathered to listen to Linden chatter, not your chatter.

There's a reason the Lindens ask us not to do things at these crowded Town Halls, and it isn't because they'll make you look cool to everyone else. If you aren't there to listen, go play somewhere else and don't ruin it for the rest of the class.

I wish I had saved the exact quote. Anyone have the quote or name of who said something along the lines of....

"Can you wait 10 minutes philip while I go take a smoke break?"

It is not in the forum logs. I agree with linden only repeaters. Or better yet an option to set it to either. Also, a rule on no advertising would be helpful.

I haven't been to any of the Town Halls yet, but from experience in past events in other games... yes, I endorse this, some silence would be good. I know that sometimes events can take some time to start, that people get bored and start to chat to fight off the boredom (I once had to mute about 40+ people at an event - was in another game, but still), but still, if you're bored, go browse the forums or something.

The smoke break line was just so lame. Why, if everyone wanted a break in the event when they need to smoke, or take a pee, or feed the cat... nothing would ever be done. Some people need to learn the basics of tact and politeness.

"Look outside, see the world?.... Ever notice how although it spins it doesn't seem to move under your feet? This is because you are moving around it - not vice versa..."

If your not going to S.T.F.U. and listen, at least have the courtesy of logging off or leaving so someone who WILL can have your seat.

Siggy.

I could not believe the rudeness of a couple people today. i would have loved to attend the meeting in person, but now I know that a couple immature people got the privelege instead of people who could have sat there like adults.

I think one person even had the gumption to say "as if I care" when people shushed him.

I for one think Haney would have been well within his right to /boot /ban flagrant offenders from the town hall sim.

Yeah, there were people chattering nonsense at the event (one of them was Philip, but that's another story). But Khamon is right about attachements and the person who started this thead had probably the greatest number of attachments there. Huns, giving the response that it's negated because of all the repeaters is a little lame to be honest - when you attend busy events it's courtesy to remove all your attachments, not check to see how many scripts the envionment is running and only remove if you think they're being sensible with the surroundings. Come on.

Ignoring basic etiquette at these events is what led you to keep your attachments on and others to chatter endlessly - it's the same ignoring of the rules. Maybe not as annoying, but flouting never the less.

What was really distasteful was the way it turned into a rating party before Philip spoke. And Haney just stood by and said nothing...

This is the problem that arrises when 95% of the population consider SL 'just a game' and the remaining 5% refuse to convince them otherwise because "they're just gamers".

The last time i went to a repeater site it was completely impossible to see what was being said. I no longer attend those events, preferring to read the transcript on the forum.

But the same is happening wherever you go, it seems to me, whether you go to a trivia or mentoring or club event, there is always at least one person who completely ruins it for everyone else. I am wondering if they are minors, or if they are adults, well they are lacking in something we all should have - respect for other people.

Well, y'know, with repeaters and Haney, theres no reason to actually have people in the same sim as Philip at all, but there again perhaps that would detract from the atmosphere some?
