My daughter said Boogeyman was pretty scary. This was a child that was raised on horror movies. At 6 years she was watching Jaws to fall asleep to and was the only person in her 6th grade to go to the movies to see Bride of Chucky. :) She also recommends the Village and she really liked the Grudge.

I myself loved Scream but that may have had more to do with Matthew Lilliard than anything else. Also Johnny Depp was in the original Nightmare on Elm Street. I love horror movies, but I prefer movies like Final Destination and Identity.

I am going to watch Saw right now. I'll post my comments on that one after the movie:)

Ha! I just finished Saw 5 minutes ago. It wasn't HALF bad. ;)

The only thing that ever really freaked me out was Zelda from Pet Cemetery... "rachel.. rachel.. RACHEL!!!"

That and the State of the Union address.

Oh, and The Exorcist.

Pet Cemetary was disturbing in many spots, such as when the little boy was hit by the truck and you see his little tennis shoe fly up in the air. So I have to count Pet Cemetary as one that bothered me. Though for the most part, I can watch any sort of mayhem and dismemberment and not blink an eye so long as it does not happen to a child or an animal.

When the Exorcist first came out on TV, I came home from work, the house was really dark and quiet and I cooked myself a steak and dropped down in front of the TV to eat and watch the movie. Right when stuff started to unexpectedly fly around the room in the movie, the plate I had my steak on cracked in half. I was raised VERY catholic and the only thing scarier than demons in my family were nuns. So I had a brief moment of unease to say the least.

Not in the horror genere, but probably the most disturbing movie that I have seen in the last decade was Leaving Las Vegas with Nicolas Cage. There were no good guys, no bad guys and nobody won. Horrible and sad.

Someone told me that The Village was good and creepy, but I have yet to see it. If someone has seen it let me know. :)

I liked the Village as did my daughter. We just finished Saw. I loved it, my daughter did not. She thinks too much. :)

Lecktor, Farenheit 911 is a good movie. Everyone in my house watched it except hubby. They all liked it. It raises some good thought provoking questions.

The Ring was definitely scary...especially the scene with the girl crawling out of a tv.

Ring2 is comming this March. I havn't seen the movie in its entirity but the stuff I have seen looks pretty creepy.

One quibble I had with the first movie- since the ghost/monster used tv screens as a portal to get to the living world, you'd think someone with a tiny TV monitor would summon her. Then when her little body comes out of the tiny screen, they squish her. Problem solved :D

Not seen the ring, but... the sixth sense? How was that scary? The ghost was the nice guy...

K, the ghost was the nice guy ... but what about the other ghosts? Ooooh they freaked me out. It scares me thinking I could just look up and see someone who's dead.

Oh yes and Gothika scared me, the one with Halle Berry.

Here is the Internet Movie Data Base top 50 Horror movies. Young Frankenstein made it on the list, so draw your own conclusions

Top 50 Horror Movies

As a kid I saw Rosemary's Baby and it scared me pretty badly. I grew up thinking it was pretty scary but I recently watched it on DVD and found it to be rather mild.

Scream terrified me a lot when I first watched it, in part because of the merciless torture-style killing in the beginning that was likely inspired by Suspiria. The lack of human compassion in that made me wince. I enjoyed the sequels (and Scary Movie movies) too but they weren't as close to my heart in terms of a movie that really grabbed me with its claws, dug in, and refused to let go.

This movie was a love story Rose, you totally missed the point.

That's definately a different perspective - and actually makes me feel a little better about the movie I guess. He accepted her and she accepted him despite the devastation that their actions brought upon their lives and in his case, ultimately death. Cage protrayed the addiction with such accuracy that I actually could not watch the entire movie the first time I saw it and only was able to watch it again years later (when I was more removed from having watched someone do it in RL) in it's entirety.

Twin Peaks was downright scary. I still get uneasy feelings when I see dark trees moving in wind...

John Carpenter's The Thing with a young Kurt Russell is an awesome sci-fi flick that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I saw Jaws when I was a kid, before I was fearless in the water but to this day I hate to be in water that I can't see the bottom. Irrational but I attribute it all to Jaws. If I could erase it from my memory I would do it in a heartbeat.

As for the scariest I will have to go with the Damien movies. Those really creeped me out and were to the bone scary.

Jaws - now that you mention it, the beginning scene in the movie where the girl is swimming at night and you see her body jerk down into the water did make me a just a little queasy about swimming in the ocean. In fact, it never fails to briefly flash through my mind every time I've been swimming at night since.

I would probably have a heart attack if I swam at night now... lol. The sad thing like I said was that I was absolutely fearless in the water before and have never been swimming since without irrationally thinking about being eaten by a shark.

I agree, Jaws scared the heck out of me.

I do not jump into deep sea waters since I saw the movie.

A couple of nights ago I watched "Open Water" and it just reinforced my aversion to swimming on open seas.

Surprised nobody mentioned this one:

CANDYMAN.

I was afraid to look in a mirror for months after that movie! Say it 5 times in the mirror, I dare ya!
Tony Todd is utterly terrifying in this movie!

The first movies that ever scared the $hit out of me were Halloween (especially when Michael gets up SILENTLY after being stabbed w/ the sewing needle!) and Alien (the tunnel scene and the final scene, sheer terror!).

I also recommend:

The Serpent & The Rainbow (if you fear being buried alive)
Hellraiser
The Thing (John Carpenter version)
The Birds (freaky freaky!)
Pitch Black (ok well not so much a horror flick, but it's got its moments)
13 Ghosts (remake was pretty good)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original is best IMHO, MEAT HOOK SCENE??!! OWWW!)
Night of the Living Dead (original... "They're coming to get you, Baaarbraaaa!";)

I thought SAW was just FREAKY... the ending OMG I was likd DAMNNN but it wasn't all that scary to me, just suspenseful. I thought Se7en was scarier.

I agree 28 Days Later is a brilliant film and has some VERY freightening moments, but I thought it was too long and drawn out.

The Ring could have been a LOT better.

I just watched The Grudge last night, it had a few truly scary moments for me, especially the SOUND that thing made... waaaagh! I wanna see the original now to see if it's better!

You wanna see a CLASSIC (1962) horror film?? check out Carnival of Souls. Some say this film is the granddaddy of em all, totally eerie feel to the film.

OMG remember this one? TERROR TRAIN. I should watch this one again as an adult, because it scared the daylights out of me when I was a kid seeing it, maybe it's not as scary as I remember LOL!

Scariest Ever: Exorcist (saw it when it was first released to theaters as a teenager..scared me bad)

Other creepy and/or suspenseful ones:

Signs
Blair Witch project
Resident Evil
The Howling (the fist one, was damn good)
Jaws
House of 1,000 Corpses (creepy factor)
Alien
13 Ghosts (the remake)
The Mad Room
Let's Scare Jessica to Death
The Ring
Hellraiser
Sixth Sense

Generally slasher movies don't scare me at all, and few others do, but some can make me feel deliciously uncomfortable.
