Now that LL is no longer going to support any contests, Bingo, Trivia, parties etc... Do you still plan to host events?

I think we threw our last Linden supported event back in April of 2004. Mature themed events haven't been supported for a long time.

I quit hosting classes when SL forced classes to have to include silly contests to get the payment.

I used to host events and I really enjoyed it. I stopped hosting them because all the griefers that started to populate SL and after there was limited funding, I couldn't afford to host contests using my own Lindens.

I've hosted several events and for the last 3 I didn't even bother to send in my event money request until yesterday. I host events for the sharing of information. The L$250 never seemed that much to me, but then I support my SL with an allowance from my First Life. I have $20 or so budgeted a week for my enjoyment. It's cheaper than doing drugs, LOL and more enjoyable and longer lasting than movie and dinner, or a night out at a bar.

I'll continue hosting the occasional Impromptu Race, but I won't be able to give out prizes anymore.

I hosted nightly events with dozen of people and never took a dime from LL...
Anybody who needs LL Money to host an event needs to look deeply at how much their event must suck. Overall, if giving away money is the primary lure to get folks to your event, your event needs help. I don't think that can be said any nicer. |

Yes, but on an experimental basis. We're going to try non-monetary prizes, and possibly asking an entrance fee to fund events with monetary prizes like Primtionary.

Honestly, I always thought 500L was too little for an event... if money is a draw for your event, you should really be giving away like 1000L.
I've wondered why people don't charge admission... I think people either forgot that's an option, or are hesitant to experiment with that. _____________________

Yes of course. I started out hosting unsupported events and much of the time when I check the "support request" box, I never file a claim after the event.
If anything, I will be increasing events. Not just my own, but I will probably put up the money to sponsor other events as well (and no, I wont force event holders to host them on my land). I have been waiting for this, actually. It is time for the Entertainment biz in SL to come of age. Previously, the only aspect of entertainment that was commercially viable was gambling or sex related. I believe the new rules are changing that, and opening the doors for other entertainment options in SL besides sexy AV contests, free money & dance parties. Of course, those things will have their place, and they will continue to be major focal points of SL socializing ... but ... I think there is now room for other, more diverse, forms of entertainment ... and I intend to help make that happen. I just have to find the right idea & talent I'm keeping my eyes open.-AP |

Short answer - yes
Longer answer - I certainly will! They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I and many others have fun doing them. Yes, the prizes may be reduced or converted to the old school method of using donated items but it's rarely been about the prize anyways. It's about socializing and having fun to some funky music for me. Antagonistic, that was one of the most mature responses I've read over the last few days on this subject, thank you. Too many are just too quick to trod all over anyone who doesn't see their methodology as the one true way. I host events that a vocal segment of the population do not care to attend, so be it. I wish there was a better filter on events as well. But to those thinking this is the end of it, you are all sadly mistaken. Opinion - For those who say I should get better skills, I am trying. I work IRL and have been to one 'class' that I saw going on in my time bracket (GMT). I have ideas galore but lack the skills thus far to implement any of them. I am not blaming a single soul out there for not 'giving me something for nothing' as I've seen it posted. I would even go so far as to say I'd pay someone to teach a smallish class some more basics in building. I'm not technical in any way so please don't start with the 'I built 2000+ items in the time you've been playing...' rubbish. We're not all on 'your' level but that doesn't mean we're not trying. The elitism and antagonistic nature of many on these boards don't go anywhere towards promoting anything utopian in SL. It seems to promote a 'my way or the highway' attitude which i find unhealthy for anything that claims to allow SL to be "Your World. Your Imagination". Please lay off the people who choose to play it their way. we now return you to a series of flamings.... |

I have never once asked for support for my events, because quite frankly they were to get dwell and meet people for my own benefit, if I did something educational I might have been tempted but I don't think they would go for 'How to sl00t 101'
TBH, since having the sim, I haven't hosted that many events, and most of mine are just impromptu get togethers, so I will still throw events, if and when I would like. _____________________

I'll still host the odd event here and there... with various objects made by me as prizes, rather than cash. No problems there. Those who don't build may have it a bit more difficult, but hey... I might give you a special rate on objects for use as prizes, if you ask me nicely!

Charge a fee people....
01-13-2005 05:20
People still get a stipend, make them use it for their entertainment. Heck if you're giving away L$ they might even come out ahead.
Linden funded events should have had a required attendance fee from the start. I'm only adding this link to show how it could work to LL's advantage to keep funding all these events. heck if they did it this way they might be able (or even have) to INCREASE the weekly stipend in six months. /120/5c/32807/1.html Yes its allot of hot air, but hey i need to try to cause a fuss like everyone else when they leave ![]() |

Being in SL to me is, among other things, about fun and socializing while listening to good music. Specifically, we can socialize in an adult, semi-anonymous, very much uninhibited environment. Parties and club events are one of the grounds for that to happen. I've had discussions in SL I wouldn't imagine having with anyone in RL. It has often been enlightening and thought provoking, and almost always very fun too. It taught me many things about myself and others. Many of those discussions would simply not have been an option in RL. I love it. I don't know whether to call it a safety valve, a secret garden, or just a way to get a new perspective. I can only testify that 1/ I'm having a lot of fun, 2/ it changed me quite a bit, 3/ it changed my perspective on other people and overall made me a more tolerant, more curious person. I'm not shocked that we don't get fully subsidized for it or for the opportunity. Why should we? Heck , if I look at other virtual worlds or online games, they cost WAY more, and they don't even allow these opportunities before you've killed a thousand goblins or Sith warriors. Best, Stephane Zugzwang |

The whole point is to take money from the world not INCREASE money. If we keep going as we are there will be inflation....finding ways to limit or pull money from the world balances the economy. Goto the link and read it bub... its a sound suggestion on how to decrease the amount of $L out there. Linden funded events that will add no money to the economy, and MOST funded events under this framework would absorb $L. I said possibly increase the stipend, if its absorbed in the right way it will not increase the actual total amount of money just floating out there. --- Rafe Phoenix |
