Our sales also increased slightly. But we put out some new goodies about the same time as the changes, so I can't judge.

What I do know is that my best spots for sales are all free. I track sales at all locations and pull out of a rental spot if it doesn't show a return. This sometimes upsets mall owners, but I tell them that it's strictly a business decision.

I have noticed higher traffic in the lower priced end of our products. It helps to diversify too. Our product range covers clothing, animations, prim accessories, and some furniture.

Yes, and there are also free malls. I'm not sure where those would be however.

Location is very important and it's a good thing when you find that one spot is not working for you, because then you can pull out, cross it off the list, and look for the next one. Malls are also a great way for people who are just starting out.

There are alot of free malls and shops around. Out of 15 vending spots I have. I think I pay rent at maybe 4 of them. Free rental places tend to be highly selective in their choice of vendors couple with being smaller shops that cater to niche markets.

My businesses were located at very good locations all across Second Life. I also did not use the lindens as real cash. What was made in game stayed in game. And unfortunatly for those of you who said I should design somethng better this is the best I can do

Make more things that you are comfortable with. One has to start somewhere. I started out just making tights/stockings and progressed from there. Its alot of trial and error.

Not at all Magnum.

Our business, and the ability to trade $L for $US pays for our island.

That island supports a shop with 27 free vendor spaces. It supports an event area which was used for a fashion show for all the clothing designers in our shops (9 designers). Our revenue paid the fee to DoveVogue to put on that fashion show.. which was free for our designers... and employed 5-6 models also.

Our island also supports 11 people in terms of building space... in other words, they don't have to pay land fees because they share ours.

None of that counts what we do personally with our revenues in terms of rating players, shopping, or sponsoring off-site events.

The economics of SL are complex and intertwined. There may be a few individuals who grab the $L and run, but that is not the case for the majority.

No, the point is that it was more or less insignifigant.

As reported in Blake's thread, my sales are up. Significantly. Jennyfur and my sales also help us to support Indigo and keep it going, and give cheap, affordable land to friends as well as not having to charge rent in our store. If we couldn't exchange L$ for US$, this would NEVER happen. It helps bear the burden through our hard work.

Alby, I'm starting to seriously consider you being a leftist trying to make fun of right-wingers.

If so you're doing a very good job.

Having watched Alby posts a lot, I dont actually think he is aware of what his political beliefs actually are. Prolly whatever Rush L. told him that day ;)

He doesn't represent the right, thats for sure. He makes the real capitalists among us look stupid by claiming to be in the same group ;)

My sales have been on the floor since September. I'm selling one, maybe two items a week if I'm lucky. It's not the changes though. My stuff just stopped selling one day and didn't pick up again.

Maybe, though I doubt it.

Sense the change I had had product start to sell that did not sell before. But that's hard to prove that releated to the lindons changes.

I guess this means we will see Magnum's av living in a dumpster, and begging for spare prims soon.

Marketing Strategy for SL
01-21-2005 06:30
Cubey pointed out web sales were better than rented booth sales for him. My amateur advice was to lower prices and lower operational costs and I still think that's a good starting point. Other people have pointed out that you often don't even have to pay for retail space if you've got a niche item (or even if it's not niche). I've heard offering freebies is a good way to spread word of mouth.

As we know in SL we aren't limited by manufacturing costs (which are different than development costs) so you can pretty much set your price wherever you want and you won't take a loss from actually passing the goods. The loss comes from the retail space if you're in a mall.

Another factor I'm guessing could be causing trouble is -lag-. Coming in all forms, from lower performance from servers at LL, to end user hardware, to end user bandwidth, it's getting harder to shop at malls. Who wants to shop at 4FPS? Would you do that in RL? Malls have to change gears as well, as I think they're a large cause of the lag I personally experience when I'm trying to navigate the landscape. This is another good case for web advertising, even though initially it seems non-intuitive.

I've only been online less than a month and I'm already getting sick of trying to navigate around poorly laid out malls jam packed with particles, and spinning prims, designed with traditional foot traffic in mind(??) when I can fly. Or those unspeakable outdoor places I fly right over now without stopping. If it looks like a garage sale, or a landfill, I'm not banking down to take a look.

This is all a good start on our way towards some decent, perhaps more sophisticated, marketing strategies. The market is clearly transformed since some are openly reporting lower sales, so we have to change with it. I'm going to start with slexchange (bizarre boycott polls and politics aside).

Thus far, my items are well below what I'm capable of and the sales reflect that.. but I still make enough in sales to support the booths with a very minor profit, so the L$'s are out there. Grabbing the attention of the new users is no longer a simple matter of a bigger rotating sign that says "Casino" on it.

Anyone else have any other new advice for the emerging situation? I have a feeling regardless of the stipend bonus changes this was a-comin'. This could probably use it's own thread but I'm too lazy to start it.

Can I sign you up for the crew, Alby? What would you consider a fair hourly rate for unskilled labor?

I think I'll hold off on working behind the counter and saying "Would you like fries?". I'll stick to Horse Racing w/Trackside betting. Hopefully I'll have it operational in a few short days. Just hammering out the Track Layout/Design and such. I've also increased the number of horses from 8 to 10. That brings the odds of winning down from 12.5% to 10% per horse. But allows me to lower the min. betting price and keep a higher level of reward-payouts.

As for hourly wages for unskilled labor, pay them the average hourly wage of what somebody makes in China and India and convert that back into L$. If memory serves me correctly, folks in India make 1/20th a US worker. Its $5.15/hr in the US, so 1/20th would be $.25/cents a hour, or about L$62/linden dollars per hour.
