Well, we all know that the event calendar is troubled. Spam for phony "yard sales," endless barrages of the exact same game in the exact same place and even "auctions" for "dates" with attractive people. And then there's stuff you can barely comprehend...

I started a blog to collect some of the gems within the event calendar. Head-scratchers and inadvertant comedy gold are both being collected. It'll be fun to watch, in the longterm, the way event announcements in SL evolve as new technologies and fads emerge.

Names of places and individuals have been removed.

I fail to see the humor in others' lack of English language skills. Not everyone in SL is American or British.

The humor is stuff like "Most high pot" describing a tringo game. :) (edit: because it's an inadvertant drug reference. Don't you watch Leno?)

No what's funny is a lot of people who write like that are in fact, native english. What's even more funny is that a lot of the people I know who're from non-english countries speak english better than those types.

And that's my master peace.

It's the illiterate Americans and British that are usually the problems. I flinch physically every time I see one of my fellow countrymen/women typing out barely comprehensible garbage online.

On the other hand, it increases my job prospects... I might not be an impeccable writer, but I'm miles ahead of my peers due to my ability to write a clear, error-free sentence.

Ahahaha.

It really should be mentioned, though, that the point of the blog isn't to poke fun at those with bad writing skills. There's plenty of stuff on the event board that isn't spelled or punctuated properly. If something is on the blog that isn't perfectly edited, it's most likely because the description ends up saying something that's either accidentally funny or accidentally poetic.

"HAVE A STAY WHILE TIME WILL GET SOME HOW PAID," for example, says something to me more about time, as an inexorable force, getting paid, somehow.

Some of the other stuff is funnier. Some stuff jumped out at me because it seemed like something that wouldn't be allowed to happen much longer.

edit: btw, XML syndication is now enabled.

There was one - I wish I could remember it now - advertising that newbies would be eaten, or something like that, but obviously didn't intend to say that. If I ever remember, I'll let you know.

I remember someone talking about meeting a supposed overseas (China?) sweatshop gamer who was supposed to find out how to make money in SL or they would get fired. That sweatshop gamer was the first person I thought of when I read these listings.

But yeah, these are funny.

Nay, nay. Once the children stop demanding, "Why is Big Bird on fire?!" you're really quite cuddly. ;)

My 3 year old son was watching me play while I was in the WA. He kept screaming BIG BIRD when he saw you.

And I agree that many of the worst spelling/grammar offenders are those who grew up speaking and writing the language.

We just had a discussion about this in world yesterday. Robin gave out the stats yesterday... something above 95% of the SL population is from the US, UK or Canada.

That being said, not everyone was lucky enough to have a fine education, and everyone isn't from an English speaking country. I can guarantee you all those posts were made by those who are, however. Besides, those people I've met in world who have English as a second or third language are typically better with both their manners, grammar and netiquette than these event spammers!

It makes me cringe when these kinds of things are typed through lazyness or sheer ignorance. I don't have a problem with the occasional "lol", "btw", or "brb" - its convenient... and almost like a modern day contraction.

I do have problems with people typing annoying event announcements when programs with free spell and grammar check are out there (OpenOffice.org, StarOffice) and the habit of typing event announcements in ALL CAPS! The VP of my RL company can not spell well at all... so you know what he does? He writes his emails in a word processor, then copies and pastes them to send them out. If you're posting an event for the whole world to see, please, at least have this courtesy.

That list is fantastic. I laughed quite a few times. Check yesterday's events at 2pm for comic gold; 6 events, 4 being TRINGO IN ALL CAPITALS (is there any other kind?), 1 being "SEXY LINGERE" contest (ALL CAPS, of course), and 1 newbie event at a club (all your traffic are belong to us). Sad, sad, sad.

There is a complete story about this in Hamlet Linden's blog. He's been following the story of the girl that lives in China and posting updates. Her and a few of her "co-workers" have found jobs doing events daily at a popular club.

I recognize a couple of the "funny" entries as events that they host. Maybe its me, but I fail to see the humor with their entries being included.

Thanks for the info Blayze, I was wondering what happened to that girl. Interesting read, and I hope Hamlet follows up after a while.

In Enabran's defense, it would be pretty hard to take only the sweatshop gamer's event listings out and leave the others. I can still laugh at unintentional humor sprung from poor/misspelled English, but I'm not laughing AT the people, I'm just laughing 'cause the result is funny. But I find a lot of crap funny, and I laugh at the stupid shit I do constantly, so YMMV.

Those who wish to see the collection as bullying people who cannot perfectly execute the language will see only that. I would venture, though, that such people need a new sense of humor. I'm not naming names and I'm not pointing out, "Oh, heh, what an idjit, they failed to include a comma." If I were to blog up everything in the event board just because it wasn't properly spelled/punctuated, Blogger would suspend me for using too much bandwidth. The test for inclusion is usually "Did it make me grin or confuse me for reasons entirely opposite what the author intended?"

Look a little more closely.

Well considering I did say, "Maybe its just me..." that would say that 1) I don't find the humor in it and 2) I was stating my opinion.

Actually, my sense of humor is just fine..my sense of fairness is even better.

Do I think you are a bully? Umm no. Do I think you have tunnel vision? uh-huh.
Lets put it in perspective...if this game were based in China, would you be able to construct a grammitically correct sentence in Chinese? I know I can't.

*oops I forgot an apostrophe*
