Cubey, if we had better vehicle support in SL I'd be all for your suggestions, but as it stands that would make travel incredibly tedious. I'd rather be stuck with our current telehub system than be forced to fly/walk everywhere.

Also, what about private island sims? As it stands, they're very isolated in that you can only teleport to them.

Sorry, but removing free teleportation sounds like a very poor and inefficient solution that is likely to cause far more problems than it would solve.

Travis, this was the response to my original post. :) Sometimes by reading more than the last few posts, we can see the big picture. :D

I still vote for being able to tp directly to a few of our favorite locations, but most importantly, land that we own as part of a group.

The original thinking was that telehubs would serve as central places for gathering, focal points for commercial development, and magnets for more urban styling. We also placed them relatively far apart, to encourage local travel (walking, flying) on the assumption that you'd have a chance to meet more people in a random sort of way. I'm not convinced that has happened either, although I could be mistaken.

I don't mind the telehubs as a whole. They have in many ways 'forced' me to see and experience things I would not have otherwise.

However, with that being said, it is a royal pain the butt to deal with something on land you own but is not your home location. For me this is group land, as I own no land in my own name. I sure would like to be able to TP directly to it.

Basically if it is mine, I want quicker access to it. If it is just a destination, I don't mind using the telehubs.

Saul,
I can count on at least one relog everytime I venture out your way to see what you and Jim are working on. There's more than one security enabled propeerty between the telehub and your place. Maybe you guys planted them! Should I take it personally?

Heh - I did worse, Koukla... I read it, replied in several posts, then forgot about it in my last one :P

I stand corrected :)

Before telehubs, we had direct site-to-site teleportation. It cost an amount directly proportional to how much distance you were travelling.

Sounds great! Except that if you were a poor newbie, you didn't have the money to pay for teleports, so you flew everywhere.

But then again, why is that such a bad thing? Leave your SL house 5 minutes early, get in your flying car, and bebop down the public skyways to your event destination... maybe see something you'd like to visit along the way.

Does anyone HONESTLY believe that having telehub land actually does anything..?

I am dying for more favorite places to save... PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

How about perfect landing on the location for the picks!! and Please add more space for the picks!!!

I mean, yes cool idea about meeting people at hubs... but who is going to stand at a hub and lag with millions of poofs, 500 attachments of more and annoying hub malls and meet people? Feels like all the dirt comes right at your face and all you want is to sophocate and not be able to breath.... Seriously, is an avatar, but you are looking at a screen that can stimulate many reactions to your RL body.... I do get motion sickness at times when I am flying and in planes.... just like other games I play.. and try to fly slower....

When I am closed in a building that I encountered that suddenly loads for me while I am flying makes me desperate somehow trying to get out , finding the door!!

Anyway... Please more favorites and picks!

Pal, this is such a vivid descriptioon and I'm glad you said this because I can really relate on the "simulate many reactions" thing! I too, feel claustrophobic in a club when it's not only packed with people, but many particle poofs start flying out everywhere.

It does actually. Here's what it <tends> to do:

1. Concentrates commercial buisness around it like a magnet. (Yes, you can find commercial stuff anywhere on the grid. But with the current system, commercial enterprises are most concentrated within 300m of telehubs).

2. For buisnesses that depend upon traffic, the "green-dot effect". There's a good number of folks that when flying around looking for something to do, will tend to stop in & check out a mass of green dots - especially if those dots are not to far from their present location. Having a club or event within 300m of a telehub maximizes this effect.

I like the idea of being able to teleport directly to any plot of land you own - or teleport directly to any group-held or group-associated land you're an officer of. But if you open it up too wide, IMHO - you're going to negatively impact the people that want quiet, residential places, and the people that want their homes as far away from heavy commercial areas as possible.

Telehubs = passive zoning

Robin, I went to a telehub today that seemed to emulate the idea you were referring to, a meeting place of sorts. The hub called Hidden Lakes Telehub in Waterhead is awesome. There were between 15-20 people just hanging out, much like they do at the welcome area....

It's only like that because it IS the WA right now. :D

Thank you for pointing that out HeatherDawn. I found that out shortly after I posted. Still, it's a great telehub even if it is serving as the welcome area now. Maybe it will stay that way. :)

Nope, it won't stay as the WA for long. You should see the new one. It's beautiful. It right next to the old one in Ahern. I'm at work right now so I can't tell you right where it is. I'm sure someone can tell you though.

What's the latest on Favorite Places?

We've been debating the telehub system, and whether we shouldn't rethink the way we've structured transportation. The original thinking was that telehubs would serve as central places for gathering, focal points for commercial development, and magnets for more urban styling. The result is only partially consistent with that thinking. We also placed them relatively far apart, to encourage local travel (walking, flying) on the assumption that you'd have a chance to meet more people in a random sort of way. I'm not convinced that has happened either, although I could be mistaken.

Thanks for your feedback on the system. If anyone else has ideas to contribute, please add to the discussion.

Any news?
