I'll chime in on the Cold Stone issue:

I tried them a few years ago in Arizona at one of the first stores the had open. 3 years later they've popped up all over the place here in the Bay Area.

As far as their actual ice cream quality goes, the flavor's I've tried are increadibly heavy on the cream side, I assume to make them more "workable" on the stone since a runny ice cream really wouldn't work well in that situation. Now, I'm all for heavy Ice Cream. As far as I'm concerned, the best ice cream place in the Bay Area is Ricks Rather Rich in Palo Alto.

However, I suspect, to help with the malability of the ice cream, Cold Stone uses corn syrup instead of sugar. I'm making that observation based on having one of their shakes, where I could taste the corn syrup and it was just plain wrong!

Also, I know the whole cold stone idea is a lot older than a decade. My wife has fond memories of several ice cream parlors back east that did this in the '80's. Ultimately, given the choice, I must admit, I'd rather spend my money on a half gallon of Breyers Natural Vanilla and whatever toppings I might want and make a mix at home rather than spend the extra money at Cold Stone.

It's just an extension of the trend for retailers to sell experiences as opposed to just goods. You pay for the show, the pomp and circumstance. It's the dinner theater of ice cream.

Of course, when i was a kid Benihana was the coolest thing ever....

OoOOOoooooo... Benihana! I still love that place, probably from childhood memories as well... hehe

As far as Coldstone goes, it's okay, but terribly dry... I like going there just to get out of my house... usually with a gift certificate in hand. Generally I avoid it because the lines are wrapped around the teeny lobby and out the door in the evenings... and go to our local Leatherby's creamery and get a grilled cheese sandwich and a black and tan. :D

Ooo... another good one is Merlino's Freeze! Mmmmmm....

Corn Syrup? Ice Cream? Thats just WRONG.

I looked up the nutritional info on their website. The contents of all flavors are not listed. There IS corn syrup in the "Blue Bunny no sugar added".

Check this out too:

Dreamery Vanilla:

Nutritional facts
Amount per 1/2 cup
Calories 260
Calories from Fat 140
Total Fat 15 (g)
Saturated Fat 15 (g)
Cholesterol 70 (mg)
Sodium 55 (mg)
Total Carbohydrates 25 (g)
Sugars 24 (g)
Protein 15 (g)
Calcium 15 %

Cold Stone Sweet Ice Cream:

Amount per 6 oz (reference: 8 oz in a cup)
Calories 450
Calories from Fat 250
Total Fat 27 (g)
Saturated Fat 17 (g)
Cholesterol 110 (mg)
Sodium 105 (mg)
Total Carbohydrates 46 (g)
Sugars 40 (g)
Protein 7 (g)
Calcium 25 %

While the serving amounts arent equal (the cold stone is a tad larger) the numbers are MUCH different which does make you wonder whats in it.

Dreamery does list the ingredients, which are as follows:

NGREDIENTS: milk, cream, skim milk, sugar, egg yolks, natural flavor, carob bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan, dextrose

Ok so this is a bump-a-doodle but here goes:

I found the best ice cream in the world :) Italian Ice King in Brentwood. Technicly it's Gelato, but it's really really really really really really really really good.

Paradise Bakery in Aspen, CO combines good ice cream and fresh baked cookies for a very tasty IC sandwich. If that's your thing, it's rare to find a place with both tasty components, especially if you’re interested in cookies more interesting than standard chocolate chip.

While it's technically not strictly speaking exactly ice cream -- Kopp's Frozen Custard in Milwaukee has got to be one of the finest ice-cream related treats on the planet. The calorie/fat content has got to be double that of anything else on the market.

If we're talking actual ice cream, my vote goes to Mexican Vanilla at Amy's in Austin, Texas. I hear the original location is gone, but that six new ones took its place!

In San Francisco, my choice is an It's It at Stow Lake.

Word.
