Two words:

NO KIDS! (Or not supposed to be <grin>;)

:-)

Wow, Chosen Few, I've read that paper you wrote somewhere! I cited it on another board I frequent with gamers. Here's hoping they didn't steal it from you :)

From: Mirra
Its hard to be an R rated person in a fully PG world. There has a net-nanny attitude & enforces it with woeful inconsistency.

What Mirra said. I'm an adult. I HATE being constrained from being fully myself just because there are kids in the game -- not that I don't understand the logic. I do. I would never want to act or speak inappropriately around someone else's kids. But where does that leave the adults?

I'm very libertarian. I don't believe in constraints on speech unless harm can be demonstrated.

Like others here, I was in TSO and immediately felt a rush of disappointment when I realized that the normal Maxis customer was about 15 years old. Same thing happened in There, except that my complaints had more to do with the lack of depth in that world and the difficulties involved in creating anything unique.

SL is right up my alley, warts and all. Being in an adult world means dealing with different things than sharing a world with kids, and I'm fine with that. The very definition of diversity includes other people being different from you. Vive la difference.

Errm, what was the question again?

Hah, my fame precedes me I guess. If you have a link to that other board, I'd love to see what my little paper may have generated. All writings in that class were easily accessable on the class website, and we did attract some attention at the time as I recall, so I guess it's not entirely suprising that some things may have oozed into other areas of the web. I think my initial impressions paper for Final Fantasy XI got a little circulation as well.

Please do let me know if you can steer me towards your citing. I'd really like to see it.

Sadly, I'm such an internet butterfly I'm not sure which of my regular boards it was on :( I just spent some time looking for it and I can't find it. Sorry.

If memory serves, I found your article on a game site like PlanetRPG or Gamespy. That's why I said I hoped they didn't steal it from you :) But nothing comes up in my searches there, either.

Sorry!

Before joining SL, I did some research on other possible metaverse games, mainly There and TSO. However, I don't see the fun in either. The graphics I saw for There looked cartoon-cheesy, and I heard that in TSO you had to have your av go to the bathroom and such. Also I read that in There, you can't make anything on your own, without it becoming property of There.

The other main factor that turned me off of There was their lame website, which only had a download for a trial. So I'm wondering, what was good about these games and is SL better?

a long long time ago sl ppl looked ugleh.. like monkeys. so youd go in there :p

I played There before I came to SL. I haven't tried TSO but had played plenty of The Sims offline. There was alright, but it really didn't have much to keep my interest. The chat bubbles are terrible. It's very frustrating watching someone else type letter by letter. Tap tap tap tap tap.....backspace backspace backspace.....tap tap tap tap tap tap...backspace backspace.... /me starts pulling out hair

The try it now feature was alright, but hardly worth expending much in the way of resources to bring to SL, IMO.

About the only thing There has over SL is a better vehicle system. Less selection of vehicles but they are much easier to use reliably.

Oh yeah...I almost forgot voice chat..... Neither needed or desired.....

What makes SL great is that it is a massively multiplayer world betterment project. It is the closest thing to an open-source online world that we have, and the fact that everyone is always working to make it a better place - and actually can make improvements with the extensive tools provided - is what distinguishes Second Life from it's competitors. (If you can really call them that.)

Just my two cents.

I played THERE for a long time! I loved it. I came to SL for personal reasons -- I go back to there from time to time -- what I love about Second Life is being able to create things.

I dont like the popularity contests in THERE -- I also dont like that when i creat something I Cant give items away for free-- it costs me so much to submit it -- then so much to sell one copy. Making it harder to become rich.

I do like the vehciles better in THERE and i think alot of the scenes are cartoony--more real looking to me. Which I like.

I like how i can own land in Secondl Life -- and i dont have to pay a montly fee of some crazy 18k per house. I hate how i have to pay real money though.

When I left THERE -- houseing was terribly expensive.

I LOVE THE TRY O MATICS! I wish i could try on clothing in SL

I like how I can voice in THERE as apposed to SL -- with no voice.

I like the dogs better in there -- the plants which are not some weird two demntional flat jpg.

There VS. SL is hard.

Mostly I stay in SL because of personal reasons. But from time to Time i go back to there and am awed by its beauty. I like the cartoons ;)

Well, thanks anyway, Cindy. I appreciate you looking.

Okay, now I'm a little disturbed. I thought you meant someone had referred to it or even quoted the whole thing on a bulletin board somewhere for further discussion. I've got no problem with that; in fact I'd encourage it and be flattered (as long as original author credit were given). However, if it's the case that one of these game review sites plagerized it and passed it off as their own, then I'm quite angry. It's not that I'm particularly proud or possessive of some little college paper I scribbled out in an hour or so; it's just the principle of the thing. If someone works for a review site, they should write their own reviews. If they're gonna quote someone else, they should at least have the courtesy to ask first and to give proper credit.

Too bad you couldn't find it. I'd love to know at whom I should aim my new death ray.

Anyway, I don't want to keep hijacking this thread so I'll drop the subject here for now. If you do happen to remember anything else or to stumble across it again, please let me know. Thanks.

That does sound like a great tool. I can not tell you how much $L I have waisted because I thought I might like the clothing or the lighting was "adjusted" on the pic and it looked totaly different once on the avatar.

Same here! Wow, that sure looks cool on the box: try it on and it sucks. Bad color, bad fit and it's no-mod. Tryed several pair of prim boots before finally found one pair that looks good once I have them on. Wasted hundreds of $L.
