They just got $8 million! Why do they need the few thousand dollars this would bring in? This is insane for all of the reasons presented above (excepting Azelda's - Have you not experienced lag before????).

Welcome Area is laggy anyway, you can feel it from the next sim :-O

That said, here's an idea: why not put the Welcome area in the Olde London part of Neverland?

Well, sure with all the hoochie haired people advertising while they aren't even really online, of course there is lag. But imagine the lag when all of that is competing with Cubey's CLUBBIEST CLUB and the inevitable ULTIMATE TELEHUB MALL!!!!!!

That is the lag I was talking about.

A themed welcome area is a cool idea, which they already have in place in Watershed. It would truly be a damn shame for them to sully any of it.

I cannot understand which genius thought of this.

Agreed, exert some Linden eminent domain and keep that telehub pristine.

While I agree with Jauani that the bidding wars would be a source or great amusement :D overall, I think it's a *very* bad idea.

Form a 'Waterhead Preservation" group and buy out the entirety of Waterhead, and don't do anything to it. If it wasn't for the tier costs for such an endeavour in order to get land that won't have anything done to it (Well, mebbe a small trail system and park benches, would be nice), I'd be all for this.

We already have one. :)

Look up "Friends of the Forest" under Find Groups. So far, we have +6000m2 of donated tier and a treasury of more than L$20K. Our current plan involves turning the area around Waterhead and as much land as we can get around it into a (hopefully sustainable) park.

Haney Linden attended our first meeting and did suggest that LL may be willing to support our project if we get a proposal togeather and have enough tier. I flew up to Waterhead and there are indeed property lines parceled out, so this may force us to get into gear sooner than we thought (Monday was only our second meeting where we elected officers, etc.)

I agree with not putting the land around the welcome area, however, I have little faith that we will be heard at this point. :( **sigh**

I have donated land tier to the Friends of the Forest group. I encourage anyone who can spare some tier or Lindens to do so as well. Every little bit helps and it's an easy way to help support forest preservation efforts like this.

you people just don't get this do you? the lindens WANT people to be introduced to the virtual economy at the welcome center. the fact that the lots will be covered with a mishmash of laggy textures and scripts is trivial compared to newbies realizing that they can shop, yea even SELL THINGS!

the economy is second life. second life is the economy. natural landscapes are cute and all, but it's not realistic to take a person's money after lending them a false impression of what this world is all about. by auctioning these lots, ll are simply being upfront and honest with the newbies about what they're about to purchase.

Y'now what'd happen?? Some club with no walls right infront of the telehub with people dancing. And so much lag you can't move. And invites to "Cloob Wertashad". I say we bomb those who buy land there!! Bomb 'em!!!
Buying land there is unfair. Those who buy will sell hundreds more products a day. BAAAAD idea, ll.

Poor, naive Khamon. You assume the Lindens want anything more than to fill their coffers. Selling these plots of land will make the Lindens money, that's all that matters. They don't care if people sell or build malls, they only like those because it strengthens their income viability. IGE and GOM are viral marketing ploys setup by the Lindens. They couldn't care if people sold cars or if they sold souls, as long as said selling created word of mouth in the economic circles.

You presume too much to assume the Lindens have any motives, save for greed. Were anything else the case, they wouldn't have welcome centers, areas that attract the lowest common denominator of the players, newbie grabbers.

I have just heard that the beautiful new welcome area - with wonderful instructions and a beautiful telehub - has PLOTS THAT WILL BE AUCTIONED in the same sim as the welcome area!

Please do not sell plots in Waterhead, or the east portion of Borrowdale!

I think this is about the WORST idea I've ever heard. This will lead to a frenzy of a bidding war, and most likely a really ugly club and mall right next to it. One of the great things about Ahern / Dore / Morris is that they provide plenty of space for the new user to become acclimated, AWAY from the rest of the user created content. People enjoy clubs, people enjoy malls, people enjoy all kinds of things in this world. That is great. But new users should be able to DECIDE what they want to do in this world, without having it crammed down their throat from day one.

Just my two cents.

-Flip

Unfortunatly as you said "will lead to a bidding war" just means us$ in LL pockets. Therefore my first instinct is that they will indeed sell them :(

I think they should be left alone too.

Thanks for the suppoprt Stephen!

To all, please note that the Forest of Kahruvel (formerly known as the Forest of Rodeo) is not supported by the Friends of the Forest group. Friends of the Forest was formed specifically to help preserve natural vistas in the new Hidden Lakes area. The Forest of Kahruvel is maintained by the Phyneas Jack Memorial Trust, which is a private family endeavor.

We have many prominent clubs in SL as it stands.

I encourage diversity. If Bedazzle were to build a "Field of Dreams" club by Waterhead, for example, I would not be opposed to that, given my high regards for their tasteful aesthetic work as shown by Gravity Space Station. Hypothetically, they could do the stylistic inverse and make a real "nature club" for social gatherings and not something packed and noisy at all. New age music could be playing, the butterflies and Field of Dreams would be out in full force, etc. :)

That is but one example. I enjoy clubhopping, but I also enjoy variety. We have very dense, packed, saturated, and unfortunately laggy areas in SL. One of the things that pleases me about the new Welcome Area and around that, is the fact that it is currently so smooth -- for obvious reasons. I can take my Hammerhead for a real spin, and sim crossings aside, it is a beautiful journey.

In any case, the community will speak collectively. Many of my friends, who I also recognize as respected talents in their fields, have said what I now also will say:

I voice my support for lush, natural forest & park openings in the new NorthEast sims.

And on a long and winding endnote, I suspect that if the beauty is not "respected" (as much as I can anthromorphize Mrs. and Mr. Trees and all their lil' saplings), a group of us will storm out there with torches and so-called Frankenstein rakes and ironically encourage the burning of one kind of wood, while endorsing the growth of another. :)

Salazar, you ought to get in touch with the group ASAP...about those officer nominations/elections... >;)

Aces: Duly noted.

Kahmon: The Lindens do have their bottom line in mind, but they're also interested in supporting the creation of attractive areas that will assist in retaining players and the appearance of some of the new sims. Otherwise, they wouldn't support things like Neutralburg and Neverland.

FlipperPA: Can you ask where you got your information that the Lindens are deffinately planing to auction Waterhead? I talked to a few other people and I want to know whether your source is credible.

To everyone else: The obligitory group plug! Friends of the Forest is currently open to join and we can use all the donations we can get, both in land tier and L$ (we're not set up to handle $US yet but we'd like to be.) All $L donations are being held in an alt account setup by Loki Pico (our recently elected treasurer) and funded by the group; hopefully we'll be able to post the financial statements of "Forest Varmint" to the public on a regular basis if people want that. We're also waiting for the Lindens to set up a group forum for us so we can hash out details of our charter and our proposal to the Lindens more effictively.

Just to look at it from a different point of view...

*Hopes not to be torn to peices*

I don't really see the problem with this.. The things it seems you don't want to crop up are, like it or not, what SL is filled with.. Clubs, Badly textured shops and the rest.

I was stuck in Dore for about 4 days after I went into SL, I had no idea. I would have killed to find a shop or even a club. I wanted to explore and didn't know how.

Isn't it better to throw newbies in the deep end rather than wrap them in cotton wool?

This is true. I remember when I was a newbie all I wanted to do was get out and explore. Luckily I was NOT stuck in Dore for 4 days -- I had a very nice mentor show me around some shops and such -- but most of all I wanted to meet new people.

Basically, the type of people we want in SL are people who are intelligent enough to weed through the bullshit. The reason they joined was because they read about all the creativity or whatever -- social interaction, blah blah blah, that was possible in SL. Yeah, it's always the newbies who have the names of fifty-thousand clubs in their group lists, but if we could see past that, why can't they?

I for one am against the selling off of land plots in this Welcome Area (which I have not seen yet ... have been unable to access SL for the past week :( ) but I don't think it would necessarily scare off newbies. Give 'em some credit, they're not that stupid and neither were we when we were noobs.
