Most Italians think nude sunbathing is perfectly natural and don't mind crossing paths with bottomless beach-goers -- even when those bottoms are unsightly, survey results released Sunday said.

While topless sunbathing is widely practiced in Italy, bottoms are usually required and nudists can face fines of more than 500 euros ($595) on some beaches, the Italian Naturalist Federation said.

But the federation said a poll it commissioned from a mainstream media outlet found nearly 70 percent of those surveyed said they would sunbath nude if everyone else did it. More than 80 percent said nudism was not erotic, but natural.

Women were more frequently bothered by nude sunbathing than men. Just over 40 percent of women said they did not like seeing other naked females on the beach, while just 5 percent of men shared their opinion about nude women.

The survey found nearly two-thirds of men said they weren't bothered by nude male sunbathers.

When it came to unattractive or "brutto" sunbathers, most of those surveyed in the country that champions physical beauty said they didn't object to seeing them naked either.

Only about 16 percent said they were vexed by unattractive women nudists and 9.7 percent objected to unsightly men.

The Federation said the survey would bolster their hopes of getting more beaches set aside for nude sunbathing.

I use to go to this place not to fare from home. My old Coven use to use it for our Summer Rituals. But I left the coven and my wife never liked the guy that ran it. (We always joked never dig out there if you don’t want to find dead bodies). Only place I know that I can go now is in Indiana and I live up by Rockford Illinois. Not driving down there thanks.

I sunbathe topless as my "girls" are my best asset, but the rest of me...I'm just not that confident

I used to go to regular beaches when I lived in Europe, and topless was not at all unusual. There was also an unspoken rule of good manners... don't stare, etc. I went to a couple of nude beaches and again, it was just nudity.. not NAKED!! Of course people were doing some discret checking each other out, but no big deal.

I wish the U.S. would get a bit more of that attitude.

We Californians wonder why the rest of the US is so Victorian about nudity. There are many municipalities here in Calif where public nudity is legal. And I've never understood why people want to wear swimwear at the beach where sand just gets in your shorts.

But most people who go to the beach or other places where nudity is allowed agree that casual nudity isn't about sex. I won't try to explain here what it is about, because if you're interested you can find out pretty easily (google is your friend).

Well the US was founded by people who got thrown out of their own countries for being prudes (i.e. Puritans) so it's pretty much a given most Americans are pretty uptight. I wouldn't sunbathe nude due to fear of harpooners, but I have no problem with people who are comfortable with their own bodies deciding they wanted to be nude. The gods created bodies it's man who decided there was shame in them.

I fully endorse nude sun bathing - its liberating and not as scary as you might think. I highly recommend it.

The Puritans weren't very prudish. By our standards they were pretty outspoken about sex. A man could be publicly chewed out in church for failing to perform his marital duties. Imagine that happening in your local church today.

I think the body issues are left over from Victorian mores. Remember.. the people who covered table legs cause they were too sexual. For some sad reason we held on to those ideas.

As for the not staring, well... duh... good manners. Naked doesn't mean sexually available in Europe... it means not dressed (unless you're in a brothel which is another story). I don't know any women personally who like being leered at by strangers. There are polite ways to let someone know you think their scenery is attractive.

Definitely. One of the most striking things in this regard is the diary of the Reverend Francis Kilvert. At the beginning of the 19th century he goes skinny dipping in the sea with a mixed group of men and women, and no-one thinks anything of it. By the end of the 19th century, he is wearing a coverall bathing suit, and young ladies are changing in bathing machines which are dragged into the sea for the women to swim off the back. The woman have very comprehensive costumes on.

Lots of 19th century attitudes about many things are still obvious.

Is it just me or is it really sad that "Yes" and "No, I don’t want to scare every one away" are equal? I mean people have such low self esteem here. Unless your some guy that has to much self esteem.

I don't see the point in Naked sunbathing.

I'm personally uninterested in tanning, sunning, etc.

And there are very good hygenic/health reasons for keeping covered in public and public areas of private residences.

Personally I just can't be without clothing. I'm to used to it. I was looked at by a cancer specialist and determined a very heavy type A burner. Living in in Northern US I can burn in less then an hour...in florida...try less then 30 minutes. Now when I am inside or it is nighttime I'll get real comfy but then my southern upbrining tells me to show some modesty. For those wondering. YES I am very white which is another reason...don't want to blind anyone.

And I have a shitload of self esteem.. But I am also a realist.. and to be honest, I think male 'bits' are the most ill designed thing in the universe as far as aesthetics go...

In Columbus, OH, women are allowed to go topless in public, and a fair number take advantage of that fact during Hempfest, the Community Festival, and other summer festivities, though you're unlikely to see topless sunbathers on just any day in the park.
